Economic analysis of Tomapep production in Nigerian Stored Products Research Institute (NSPRI), Kano State, Nigeria
This study investigated the economic analysis of Tomapep production at the Nigerian Stored Products Research Institute (NSPRI), Kano. The objective of this study is to conduct an economic analysis of Tomapep paste production at the Incubation Centre of the Nigerian Stored Products Research Institute (NSPRI) in Kano. Specifically, the study evaluates the financial returns and benefit-cost ratio (BCR) of Tomapep production. A hardcopy interview schedule was used to obtain the needed information for this experimental research. An experimental research design was adopted for this study. The data collected were analyzed using cost and returns analysis and benefit-cost ratio (BCR). The entire experiment was conducted within the duration of two days. The results show a BCR of 1.56, indicating that for every ₦1 invested in Tomapep production, a return of 56 kobo is generated. Furthermore, an economic return (profit) of ₦138,103.11 and a unit profit of ₦543.72 were achieved. The findings suggest that Tomapep processing at the Nigerian Stored Products Research Institute (NSPRI) Incubation Centre, Kano, is a profitable venture. It is recommended based on the findings of this study that the Nigerian Stored Products Research Institute (NSPRI) continue to prioritize training for farmers, processors, and other stakeholders in postharvest processing, particularly for tomatoes and bell peppers, since it was discovered from the findings that Tomapep production is profitable
Customary Dispute Resolution Mechanisms as Tools for Counterterrorism in Nigeria
Nigeria has seen terrorism breed bitter rivalries rooted in the conflicts that have tended to involvegrievances about politics, marginalisation and economic injustice. The paper explores the potential of tradition dispute settlement processes as counterterrorism tools by considering these issues. Mediation, conciliation and arbitration, local, indigenous practices, provide regional, culturally based forms of conflict resolution that might supplement official counterterrorism measures. This study is mixed methods. The basis for the doctrines is doctrinal analysis on the law and constitution on customary law and counterterrorism (that is the Constitution of Nigeria (1999), Terrorism (Prevention) Act 2011 and any enactment of this Act by courts). The paper will also look at comparisons with other countries where the traditional systems have been adopted as part of national security policies for guidance. These results indicate that tradition-based dispute resolution strategies can blunt radicalisation through conversations, settlements and reconciliation. Yet there are some major hurdles, such as tensions between customary practices and the constitution, sex exclusion and a lack of formal mechanisms to embed these tools into Nigeria’s legal system. In this article, a more balanced solution, combining tradition-based dispute settlement and official counterterrorism, that respects cultural difference without compromising constitutional or international human rights law is proposed. It ends with policy prescriptions for how to deploy these tools in a more holistic, localised approach to peacebuilding and national security.
Traditional Surrogacy in Igbo Culture: An Appraisal of Ethical Issues
Surrogacy as a form of assisted reproductive mechanism is prevalent in the Igbo culture but in another dimension. The traditional surrogacy practice in the south-eastern part of Nigeria is anchored on the quest for procreation in a marriage union for the protection of family lineage against extinction. In Igbo Culture, children are regarded as a boost to the social status of their parents; they attract to their parents a sense of personal fulfilment, honour and prestige. To this extent, couples by procreating, gain community acceptance and social respect whereby Infertile couples face family pressure especially from the husband\u27s family; they are stigmatized and ridiculed by society. The traditional surrogacy practiced was embraced as an alternative for families who lack children or male children who will inherit their properties and continue the family lineage. The authors beyond defining the concept, went further to discuss the practice of traditional surrogacy in Igbo culture and also x-rayed the ethical issues that have arisen in the practice. Several recommendations were made that the authors believe if embraced, can help reduce the rate at which traditional surrogacy is practised, as once the root cause is addressed, then there will be solution.
Vindicating and Defending Lay Church Workers’ Rights against Poor Remuneration in the Catholic Church in Nigeria
Right must not only be theoretical but practical. If there is right, there should be means for its vindication and defence. The paper aims at creating awareness of canonical provisions for the vindication and defence of right and dignity of human person. It identified the following problems: (i) ignoble respect for human dignity, (ii) ignorance, (iii) exploitation, (iv) injustice, and (v) insensitivity. The following approaches were applied; expository, analytical, exegetical and deductive. The findings of this paper revealed the poor economic situation of the country and the fact that most of the salaries paid to lay Church workers could not meet even their basic needs. One wonders how the Church as the voice of the voiceless and the beacon of hope in social justice, in defending the rights of the poor and the oppressed in the society can fall victim of the very injustice she stands often to condemn. The paper examines canon 221 and its implications for vindicating and defending lay Church workers’ rights against poor remuneration in Nigeria. Finally, it recommended the following: creating awareness of canonical provisions, entrenching the culture of vindication and defence, remuneration policy for lay Church workers, periodic review of workers remuneration as well as setting a monitoring team and establishment of arbitration and ethics office.
Empowering the Lay Faithful: From a Passive Participation to a Prophetic Mission
This paper examines the limited involvement of lay faithful in the Church\u27s prophetic mission, despite their baptismal inclusion and Church teachings advocating for their participation The problem appear to be a lack of awareness among lay faithful regarding their rights and responsibilities. The aim of this study is to analyzes Church documents, discussions, and examples of lay involvement to identify barriers and propose solutions. The methodology includes both qualitative and comparative approaches. The paper suggests that the solution to fix the problem is to give lay faithful’s the tools they need to participate. This means providing them with good training and education about their faith and encouraging Catholic leaders to actively support them in their role of sharing the Church\u27s message. By doing this, the Church can become more energetic and involve everyone in its mission of evangelization

Examination of the Impact of Neighbourhood Green Spaces on the Rental Value of Selected Estates in Lagos (Island Axis)
Neighborhood green spaces play a crucial role in urban environments, significantly impacting the economic and social lives of residents. In Lagos, particularly the island axis, the scarcity of neighborhood green spaces has not been thoroughly examined in relation to its effect on rental values. Lagos is experiencing a significant shortage of green spaces due to rapid urbanization and population growth, resulting in the conversion of open areas into built-up environments. This study aims to examine the impact of neighbourhood green spaces on the rental value of selected estates in Lagos (Island axis). The objectives of this study are; to determine the effect of green spaces on the rental value of properties in the selected estates in Lagos Island; to evaluate residents’ perception of the importance of green spaces in their neighborhoods and to examine the potential economic benefits of green spaces to real estate owners, occupants and professionals in the study area. The population of study comprise of property owners, tenants within the selected estates, and estate surveyors and valuers managing the properties. The research will focus on a sample size of 335, with data collected primarily through questionnaire and direct interviews with collected data analyzed adopting descriptive statistics of frequency and percentages and accumulated percentages. Findings revealed that the presence of green spaces within walk-able distances attracts higher rental values with willingness of residence to pay to enjoy such benefits within the selected estates of the study area. However, these green areas should possess features that can enhance quality of life to warrant the rental difference. It was therefore recommended that urban planning policies be strictly implemented, increased investment in green infrastructure, better public-private partnership as well as community engagement in achieving a better green environment, strategic green space design among others.
