WASTE REDUCTION AND CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT CULTURE: DETERMINANTS OF PERFORMANCE IN FOOD AND BEVERAGE MANUFACTURING FIRMS IN SOUTH-SOUTH NIGERIA
This study investigates the effect of waste reduction and continuous improvement culture, two core components of the Integrated Lean Six Sigma (ILSS) production system on the performance of food and beverage manufacturing firms in South-South Nigeria. Anchored on the Theory of Constraints (TOC), the research examines how waste reduction influences production efficiency and how continuous improvement culture shapes employee productivity and engagement. A descriptive survey design was employed, with data collected from 303 respondents across five multinational food and beverage companies in the region. Data analysis involved descriptive statistics, linear regression, and multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA). Findings reveal that waste reduction exerts a statistically significant positive effect on production efficiency (R = 0.784, R² = 0.615, p < .05), indicating that eliminating non-value-adding activities can improve efficiency by over 61%. Continuous improvement culture was also found to significantly influence both employee productivity (R² = 0.667) and employee engagement (R² = 0.536), underscoring the role of cultural transformation in workforce performance. The study concludes that adopting ILSS practices that integrate waste elimination and continuous improvement principles can enhance operational efficiency and workforce output in resource-constrained environments. It recommends that manufacturing firms should institutionalize continuous improvement programs, invest in employee training, and adopt data-driven waste reduction strategies to sustain long-term competitiveness
PUBLIC RELATIONS AND SOCIAL MEDIA STRATEGIES FOR WASTE MANAGEMENT CAMPAIGN IN NIGERIA: A STUDY OF NATIONAL ENVIRONMENTAL STANDARDS REGULATORY AND ENFORCEMENT AGENCY (NESREA)
The study was conducted to investigate public relations strategies and social media platforms that NESREA could use in the campaign against indiscriminate disposal of waste in Nigeria. The study is underpinned by Two-way Symmetric Model and supported by Technological Determinism Theory and Frank Jefkins’ Transfer Process Model. Library research method was employed. Findings revealed that, converting negative situations to positive situations, two-way communication, media relations, research and data collection were public relations strategies that NESREA could adopt in the campaign against indiscriminate waste disposal in Nigeria. NESREA could convert negative situations to positive situations by adopting the Transfer Process Model. Media relations on the on other hand can get NESREA free and positive coverage. It was further revealed that, Facebook, WhatsApp, TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat and Twitter(X) are social media platforms that NESREA could use in its waste management efforts. These social media platforms would make it easy for NESREA PR team to share messages with its publics in the form of text, videos and photos. It was concluded that, in the 21st century organizations like NESREA cannot make huge impact in her public relations efforts without embracing the 21st century media. It was recommended that, NESREA should use and continue to use social media in its public relations campaign, because the best way to achieve two-way communication is through the use of the social media.

OPTIMIZING SERVICE QUALITY MANAGEMENT FOR ENHANCED USER SATISFACTION IN TIN CAN ISLAND PORT, LAGOS

STRATEGIC RISK MANAGEMENT AND SUSTAINABILITY OF CONSTRUCTION FIRMS IN SOUTH-EAST, NIGERIA
Strategic risk management is a systematic framework for identifying and addressing uncertainties that could impact an organization\u27s ability to achieve its long-term objectives, thereby enhancing resilience and ensuring operational continuity. This study evaluated the effect of strategic risk management on the sustainability of construction firms in South-East Nigeria, focusing on five key practices and their corresponding sustainability dimensions which are: the effect of risk monitoring on supply chain resilience, risk identification on operational efficiency, risk mitigation on resource conservation, risk communication on stakeholder engagement and also the effect of risk compliance on quality management sustainability. Utilizing a descriptive survey research design, data were collected from 313 employees across 25 purposively selected large-scale construction firms and analyzed using simple linear regression. The findings revealed statistically significant positive relationships across all tested variables. Risk monitoring was found to have a significant effect on supply chain resilience, explaining 21.3% of the variance (R² = .213, F(1, 311) = 83.941, p = .024). Risk identification significantly influenced operational efficiency sustainability, accounting for 18.9% of its variability (R² = .189, F(1, 311) = 72.316, p = .031). The study concluded that strategic risk management is an indispensable driver of long-term sustainability for construction firms in the region. It is recommended that firm leaders implement formal, enterprise-wide SRM frameworks, and that policymakers create incentives to promote the adoption of these vital practices to enhance industry resilience and performance.

Awareness and Practicing of Preventive Measures of Sexually Transmitted Diseases among Senior Secondary School Students in Lapai Local Government Area of Niger State, Nigeria
This study examined awareness and practicing of preventive measures of sexually transmitted diseases among senior secondary school students in Lapai Local Government Area of Niger State, Nigeria. Four objectives and four research questions guided the study. Four null hypotheses were formulated and tested at 0.05 levels of significance. Hypothesis one (1) and two (2) measured difference in the awareness and practicing of preventive measures of sexually transmitted diseases on the basis of gender. While hypotheses three (3) and four (4) measured difference in the awareness and practicing of preventive measures of sexually transmitted diseases on the basis of age. Survey design was adopted in this study. The population of this study comprised of four thousand, seven hundred and twelve (4,712) senior secondary school students. A total number of three hundred and sixty two (362) were selected as sample for the study. Students’ Awareness and Preventive Measures of Sexually Transmited Diseases Questionnaire (SAPMSTDQ) was use for the collection of data for the study. The data collected were analyzed using independent sample t-test and analysis of variance (ANOVA). The finding of hypothesis one revealed that there is no significant difference between male and female senior secondary school students in the awareness level of sexually transmitted diseases in Lapai Local Government Area of Niger State. The finding of hypothesis two indicated that there is no significant difference between male and female senior secondary school students in the practicing of preventive measures of sexually transmitted diseases in Lapai Local Government Area of Niger State. The finding of hypothesis three showed that there is no significant difference on the awareness level of sexually transmitted diseases among senior secondary school students in Lapai Local Government Area of Niger State on the basis of age. The finding of hypothesis four revealed that there is no significant difference in the practicing of preventive measures of sexually transmitted diseases among senior secondary school students in Lapai Local Government Area of Niger State on the basis of age. Based on these findings, it was recommended among others that school counsellors and psychologists should organize group guidance programme for secondary school adolescents with the aim of educating young people about STDs. This will help to reduce risk of sexually transmitted diseases
Rhetoric Techniques: A Study of Ezenwa Ohaeto’s The Chants of a Minstrel
One of the defining characteristics of poetry is its ability to generate multiple meanings and interpretations. While the orality of Ezenwa Ohaeto’s poetry and performance have received more positive criticisms by critics as well as acceptance, his deployment of rhetoric strategies as a potent amour in poetry seems to have been neglected by critics. This paper aims at investigating Ohaeto’s use of rhetoric techniques in his poetry using qualitative research methodology. Significantly, this work attempts a textual and sub-textual analysis of Ohaeto’s conventional language in poetry that leads to his literary and poetic effectiveness. Building on the ideologies of postcolonialism, Ohaeto’s select poems from The Chants of a Minstrel as primary data are studied and analysed with a view to examining his reliance on rhetoric as discursive strategy to question socio-cultural and socio-political issues in Nigerian context and by extension, Africa and the world in general. Motivated by the scanty scholarly studies on rhetoric in Ohaeto’s poetry; the paper identified some rhetoric techniques in the versifier’s poems using postcolonial theory and qualitative research method. It also demonstrated that rhetoric plays contextual role such as being interactional tool in the hands of poets. It is found out that Ohaeto deployed rhetoric techniques as poetic armouries to question and address socio- cultural, socio-political and socio-economic issues in order to bring a radical change in his society. This work revealed the effectiveness of Ohaeto’s style and dependence on rhetoric as an oratory poetic technique. Rhetoric to a very large extent is Ohaeto’s favourite device in writing
A Syntactic Analysis of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Inaugural Speech
The aim of this research was to carry out a syntactic analysis of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s inaugural speech, with a view to examining the syntactic devices employed, discussing how the syntactic devices help in the interpretation of the speech and explaining the devices in relation to the context of the speech. The inaugural speech of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu served as the data for the study. A combination of qualitative and quantitative approach was adopted in the study. The analysis of the data was done using frequency-based approach, with insights drawn from Halliday’s Systemic Functional grammar. The findings revealed the predominance of simple sentences for clarity and easy understanding as well as the strategic use of ellipsis, appositions, and substitutions to avoid unnecessary repetitions and for the purpose of emphasis. Adverbial phrases and syntactic parallelism were also employed to create unity and rhythm in the speech. The study concluded that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s language choices reinforce his political ideology, policy priorities and vision for Nigeria’s future
Phonological Description of the Spoken English Forms of Educated Ikale and Ondo Speakers of Nigerian English
Attention of researchers has been drawn to the phonological description of the varieties of Nigerian English spoken by the three major ethnic groups such as the Yoruba, Hausa and Igbo. However, as Jowitt (1991:71) comments, there is little available information on the spoken English of Nigeria’s smaller ethnic groups. Therefore, this study undertakes a phonological description of the spoken English forms of educated Ikale and Ondo speakers of Nigerian English. Guided by Generative Phonology and Metrical Phonology as theoretical frameworks, one hundred educated subjects from each of Ikale and Ondo were used to collect data for the research. The subjects were made to read a prepared text containing the features being tested into a voice recorder. Their responses were transcribed and statistically analyzed. Both the voiced and the voiceless dental fricatives /ð/ and /θ/ still pose a challenge to the educated people from Ikale and Ondo dialectal groups. Most of the English vowels used by educated Ikale and Ondo speakers of Nigerian English in their spoken English are hardly approximated to those of Standard English; this low performance confirms the results of earlier researches. It was observed by this research that the spoken English of educated Ikale and Ondo speakers of Nigerian English is at variance with Standard English in terms of stress placement, articulation of some vowels and consonant sounds. It was also found that the spoken English of educated Ikale and Ondo is characterized by spelling pronunciation. In conclusion, the outright absence of the English phonological process of assimilation from the spoken English of educated Ikale and Ondo English speakers has a telling effect on their phonological renditions; hence, breeding a version of Nigerian English which could either be seen as variation or deviation from Standard British English
