    Chemo-remediation of crude oil polluted soils obtained from recent polluted site in oil producing environs in Rivers State Nigeria

    A research article with tablesThe chemo- remediation of crude oil polluted soils from recent pollution sites in oil producing environs in River state was carried out by both in vivo and in vitro methods using macro-soil nutrients ( Nitrate, Phosphate and Potassium) as index for remediation. The soil samples were labeled A, B, C, D1 to D6, sample A was obtained from pollution free site used as a control.Sample C was crude oil polluted soil not treated with surfactant, sample B was crude oil polluted soil leached with surfactant and not mineralized. Samples D1-D6 were polluted soil samples, leached with surfactant and mineralized with fertilizer. The samples were leached with linear alkyl benzene sulphonate (LABS) and later mineralized with Nitrate, Phosphate and Potassium (N.P.K) fertilizer and returned to the site of excavation to fallow for four months. The samples were later re-excavated and taken to the laboratory for analysis. Nitrate and phosphate contents were obtained with the aid of spectrum lab 725 UV visible spectrophotometer and potassium content was determined by use of a flame photometer. Results showed that sample A had nitrate concentration of 330ppm, sample B had concentration of 21ppm, sample C had a concentration of 54ppm while samples D-D6 had concentrations ranging from300ppm to 420ppm.Similarly, The phosphate concentrations were 68.50ppm, 17.00ppn, 28.00ppm and 48.80-136.40ppm for sample A, B, C.D1-D6 respectively. The potassium concentrations were not different as concentrations of 46ppm, 12ppm, 28ppm and 38ppm-64ppm was recorded for samples A, B, C, and D1-D6 respectively. These results revealed that crude oils not only renders soils unusable but also destroys the nutrient availability in soils. The soils can therefore quickly be reclaimed by leaching them with surfactants and mineralizing them with adequate inorganic fertilizer

    Women farmers preferred communal land conflict management and resolution strategies in Abia State, Nigeria

    The research article has tablesCommunal land conflicts affect have become common in Nigeria among different users of land especially farmers. This study examined women farmers’ preferred land conflict management and resolution strategies in Abia State, Nigeria. The specific objectives were to identify the perceived causes of communal land conflicts; determine the preferred institutions for resolving land conflicts; examine the perceived effects of communal land conflicts; identify the respondents’ preferred conflict resolution strategies used; and the reasons for preference of the strategies used. Data were collected using questionnaire and oral interview and analyzed with mean and standard deviation. Results showed that claim of ownership with mean (M) value of 2.70, indiscriminate grazing by animals (M=2.60), population pressure (M=2.54), contested boundary (M=2.51) were major causes of land conflicts. The institution preferred for conflict resolutions were amala (M=2.53), umuada (M=2.93), town unions/age grade (M=2.48) and agbara (dieties) (M=2.74). Conflict leads to low productivity (M=2.37), loss of lives and property (M=2.64). The women prefer mediation, reconciliation, compromise and accommodation for resolving conflicts and the reason being that problems are solved one at a time, leads to a win-win situation, lowers level of tension, creation of goodwill among others

    A journal article on resource-use conflicts as a challenge to livestock development and animal agriculture with maps and tablesOne of the major but hidden challenges to livestock development and animal agriculture in the world over is resource-use conflicts between crop farmers, pastoralists, and other land users. This is so because during conflict situation, almost all human livelihood activities come to a standstill including livestock farming. This study, therefore, sought to examine how conflicts involving different land users hinder livestock production. Questionnaire and oral interview were used to obtain information from a total of 120 pastoralists in three selected states of Southeast (Abia, Enugu, and Imo). Data were analyzed using percentages, mean, and standard deviation. The results showed that the mean age of pastoralists was 38, and the mean household size was 10, mean herding experience was 18. The following were the causes of resource-use conflicts – blocking of water sources by crop farmers with a mean (M) response of 3.30, farming across cattle routes (M=2.95), burning of fields (M=3.30), and theft/stealing of cattle (M=3.40), among others. The factors attracting the pastoralists to the study area were availability of special pasture (M=2.37), availability of land for lease (M=2.52), and water availability (M=2.60) among other reasons. Conflicts, therefore, affect livestock production in the following ways – unsafe field for grazing, poor animal health, loss of human and animal lives, abandonment of herds for dear life, and many others

    Performance evaluation of a biomaterial in an aqueous based drilling mud at high pressure high temperature

    This article contains figures and tablesOil reserves are found in deep formations where the conditions of temperature and pressure are always high. These conditions have direct effects on the rheological properties of drilling fluid as they vary with increasing temperatures and pressures. Two sets of experiment were carried out on weighted and unweighted mud samples at a temperature of 250o F and 500psi pressure. The presence of locally sourced additives helped the mud to remain pseudoplastic at these conditions and also retained essential properties of the mud need for drilling operations. The plastic viscosities of the weighted and unweighted mud were 36cP and 27cP respectively. The yield stresses were 149lb/1002 ft and 110lb/1002 ft for the weighted and unweighted samples while the fluid loss volumes were approximately equal. The thickness of the cake for the weighted sample is 3.7mm and 4mm for the unweighted sample. The weighted sample with a reasonably higher PV has a better hole cleaning ability than the unweighted sample. Mucunna Solannie performed excellently to retain the essential properties of these formulations at 250o F and is therefore recommended as a HPHT drilling mud additive
