Käyttäjien näkemykset luovasta omistajuudesta generatiivisen tekoälyn yhteydessä
In the past couple of years Generative Artificial Intelligence has taken a prominent role in public discourse due to its almost omnipresent nature in the modern information space. While previous study has been conducted into how users engage with and perceive the outputs of these tools, the full image of what kind of relationship the general public may have with them has been left unclear. This study analyzes both general sentiments, and scenario-based perceptions of ownership of content generated through Artificial Intelligence collected through an online survey (n=264). The general sentiment of the surveyed online population trend sharply negative, with output from GenAI tools being largely identified as not inducing feelings of personal ownership. These findings concur with some of the earlier works, and hopefully help illuminate some of the trends seen in both online and offline conversation
Leikkaavien eriarvoisuuksien tutkiminen nuorten sisäänpäin suuntautuneessa käyttäytymisessä Suomessa
Adolescent internalizing behaviors, encompassing anxiety, depressive symptoms, social withdrawal, and somatic complaints, pose a significant public health concern. Although sociodemographic disadvantage drives mental health inequalities, extant research largely examines social positions in isolation, thereby overlooking their intersections. This study examines how internalizing behaviors are shaped by intersecting social positions defined by sex, family status, parental education, and household income, and whether these inequalities exhibit additive or multiplicative effects.
Data were drawn from 7,792 adolescents aged 15–16 years in the Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1986. Internalizing behaviors were assessed using a continuous composite score derived from standardized self-report subscales. Intersectional inequalities were analyzed using Multilevel Analysis of Individual Heterogeneity and Discriminatory Accuracy (MAIHDA), with individuals nested within 36 strata defined by these intersections.
Female adolescents reported higher internalizing scores than male adolescents (mean difference = 5.59 points). Adolescents whose parents lived together had lower scores than those whose parents did not (mean difference = 0.87 points). Parental education and household income were not significantly associated. The null model indicated moderate between-stratum variance (VPC = 0.14). Additive effects explained 99.47% of between-stratum variance, leaving only 0.53% attributable to interaction effects, with low discriminatory accuracy. Predicted mean scores were lowest among male adolescents whose parents lived together and highest among female adolescents whose parents did not live together.
Internalizing behaviors were shaped by intersecting social positions, particularly sex and family status. However, inequalities were largely additive, and low discriminatory accuracy suggested that intersectional strata explained limited individual variation, reflecting substantial within stratum heterogeneity
Imagined Homelands in Print: AI-Based Text Segmentation and Register Analysis of the Finnish-American Press, 1876–1923
Abstract
This article presents a study on the use of artificial intelligence to analyze Finnish-language newspapers published in North America between 1876 and 1923. Using GPT-4 and LLaMA 3.1, we develop and evaluate a text segmentation method on large-scale digitized historical data, and we propose a hierarchical taxonomy for register (genre) classification based on manual annotation. We present a methodology for identifying text boundaries and, separately, a manually developed register taxonomy used to classify segments. Our analysis is grounded in a manually annotated stratified corpus of 500 documents selected from 312,300 digitized pages. Results demonstrate strong segmentation accuracy, contributing both to digital humanities methodology and the historical understanding of the Finnish-American immigrant press.Abstract

Application of the 5S method in workplace safety improvement
Tässä kandidaatintyössä tarkasteltiin 5S-menetelmän vaikutuksia työympäristön turvallisuuteen. Työn tavoitteena oli selvittää kirjallisuuden perusteella, miten 5S-menetelmä vaikuttaa tapaturmien ehkäisyyn, turvallisuuskäyttäytymiseen ja turvallisuuskulttuuriin. Tutkimus toteutettiin kirjallisuuskatsauksena hyödyntäen tieteellisiä tutkimuksia ja muuta kirjallisuutta.
Kirjallisuuden perusteella 5S-menetelmällä on selkeä vaikutus työympäristön turvallisuuteen.
Toward Earlier Bedtimes: Randomized Trial of Multi-Method Interventions in a Community Cohort of Adolescents
Abstract
Purpose:
Many adolescents develop very late circadian rhythms, indicating delayed sleep phase. Interventions are sparse, and the stability of any improvements is rarely reported. To evaluate how late sleep patterns can be improved, we performed a randomized control trial among adolescents. Overall, 4–6-week intervention modes included bright light therapy (BLT), personalized sleep coaching, or their combination (BLSC), and an active control group receiving information.
Methods:
We measured the sleep and circadian patterns of 288 adolescents (17 years) born in years 1999–2000. A sub-sample (n = 176) that weighted on late sleep rhythms participated in the randomized control trial. Sleep, circadian temperature patterns, depressive symptoms, anxiety, and sleep hygiene were measured at baseline (T1) after the intervention (T2) and after 1 year (T3) with GeneActiv Original actigraphy, ibutton 1922L thermologgers, and validated questionnaires.
Results:
Participants in the SC group significantly increased their sleep duration compared to the control group, 23 minutes from T1 to T2 and 33 minutes from T1 to T3 (p < .03). They also improved their sleep hygiene from T1 to T2 (p = .019), but this did not persist to T3. Other groups did not improve their sleep patterns.
Discussion:
Although personalized sleep coaching resulted in persistently longer sleep, none of the interventions were successful in overcoming late sleep rhythms among an adolescent sample derived from the population register. Delayed sleep phase is a persistent condition with biological components, and a 4-week intervention is presumably too short for changing sleep behavior and rhythms.

School engagement as a factor behind and in the prevention of school absenteeism
Näkökulmana tarkastelussa on nimenomaan opettajan rooli ennaltaehkäisyssä.
¨
A nationwide population-based cohort study of hospital academic status and survival following colorectal cancer surgery in Finland 1987-2016
Abstract
There is a lack of evidence regarding hospital academic status and survival following colorectal cancer surgery and there is a paucity of data from European countries. The aim of this study was to investigate this association between hospital academic status and mortality after colon and rectal cancer surgery. All 49 032 patients who underwent resection for colorectal cancer in years 1987–2016 in Finland were included, with complete follow-up until December 31, 2019. Primary outcome was all-cause 5-year mortality. Cox regression provided hazard ratios (HR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) in academic and non-academic hospitals for colorectal surgery, adjusted for calendar period, age, sex, comorbidity, stage, tumor location and oncological therapy. Additionally, colon and rectal cancer surgery were assessed separately. Total colectomies were included in the study, and the cancer location was based on the first location information that was reported by the cancer registry or in the ICD code if not reported in the cancer registry. The manuscript was written according to Equator network guidelines. Compared to academic hospitals, the patients operated in non-academic hospitals had a slightly increased 5-year all-cause mortality (adjusted HR 1.07, 95% CI 1.04–1.11) and also the 30-day and 90-day mortality was increased in patients operated in non-academic hospitals. Sensitivity analysis including only patients operated with confirmed curative intent suggested no differences between academic and non-academic hospitals in colorectal cancer for 5-year all-cause mortality or in 5-year cancer specific mortality, respectively. In analysis including hospital volume as an explanatory covariate, the increase in 5-year mortality in non-academic hospitals compared to academic hospitals was stronger than in main analysis. A pre-planned subgroup-analysis stratified by cancer type (colon, or rectal) suggested a slightly decreased 5-year all-cause mortality in academic institutions for rectal but not for colon cancer surgery. Hospital academic status is associated with slightly improved 5-year mortality in colorectal cancer surgery, but benefits of centralization to academic hospitals may be limited to rectal cancer surgery.Abstract

Vetydiskurssin dynamiikat Suomessa
The goal of the thesis was to explore how hydrogen discourse evolved in Finland in the past years. The work used a modified version of argumentative discourse analysis, and focused on discourses about hydrogen in local newspapers in four areas of Finland, reviewing the newspapers Helsingin Sanomat in the South, Kaleva in the North, Satakunnan Kansa in the West and Etelä-Saimaa and Karjalainen in the East. The results indicate that there are noticeable differences in discourse, conceptualizations and state of “hydrogen hype” between the regions.
Time sequenced discourse analysis of Kaleva and Helsingin Sanomat were done to observe changes in tone regarding economic, social, technical and environmental storylines in the past years. This part continues an earlier work that evaluated the discourses between 2021 and beginning of July 2024. Tracking the changes in storylines allows to follow the state of “hydrogen hype” in these regions. The results indicate that hydrogen discourse in Helsingin Sanomat follows the progress of the Gartner hype cycle theory. The “peak of inflated expectations” occurred at the beginning of 2023, after the inclusion of hydrogen to national climate and energy strategy. The discourses in Kaleva and Eastern Finland newspapers do not follow the same trajectory. In both Helsingin Sanomat and Kaleva, the “through of disillusion” path is observable as tone has become more negative, when describing the social and economic impacts of hydrogen developments. This can be seen as a positive development, if the challenges and barriers are discussed openly, which can help rebuild trust and social acceptance
