Observations of fragmented aurora-like emissions and picket fence on the poleward edge of the auroral oval
Abstract
We analyzed fragmented auroral-like emissions (FAEs) and picket fence structures observed in northern Scandinavia during a magnetic storm on 1 January 2025. The analysis is based on ground-based high-sensitivity optical observations and in-situ measurements from the Swarm satellites. While FAEs and picket fences have previously been reported in the polar cap and subauroral region, respectively, this study reports simultaneous occurrences of both phenomena in auroral latitudes, near the poleward edge of the oval. Ground-based camera observations revealed that some FAEs exhibited orientations closely aligned with the modeled local magnetic field in the image plane and appeared simultaneously at multiple longitudinally separated locations. Furthermore, the FAEs appeared to follow the motion of red auroras, suggesting that the background electric field structure and spatial gradients in the electron density may influence their formation. Consistent with previous studies, the generation of FAEs is considered to be due to local acceleration of electrons in the ionosphere rather than electron precipitation from the magnetosphere. While we could not clearly identify the generation mechanisms, the morphological diversity observed in this event suggests that multiple plasma instabilities may be involved in the generation of both FAEs and picket fence structures.Abstract

Prevalence of Adolescents' Persistent High Utilization of Outpatient Healthcare Services and ICD-10 Diagnoses: A Retrospective 4-Year Population-Based Register Study
Abstract
Background:
Persistent high healthcare utilization has rarely been analyzed in adolescent populations although there are specific chronic health issues also among adolescents, like mental health challenges and some somatic illnesses, which need long-term treatments. Therefore, it remains unclear whether such high utilization is persistent among adolescents. Recognizing patterns of high service utilization and its’ persistence are essential for preventing avoidable healthcare use.
Materials and Methods:
This population-based study focused on all adolescents born in 2004 (n = 1483) from North Karelia, Finland. Healthcare service use data (2018-2021) was extracted from the electronic patient register. A high utilizer of healthcare (HU: the abbreviation also refers to high utilization) was defined as a person having been in contact with healthcare services during at least 12 days a year (attendance days). A persistent HU (pHU) was a person identified as being HU during 3 or 4 of all 4 follow-up years. The prevalence of diagnoses set to young people was compared in accordance with ICD-10 diagnostic categories between pHU and non-pHU groups.
Results:
pHUs accounted for 18.5% (n = 275) of all adolescents born in 2004. A total of 53.5% (n = 793) of adolescents met the criteria of single-year HU during the follow-up period, and of these, 34.7% were also identified as pHU. The pHU group was particularly emphasized in mental and behavioral disorders (RR = 4.5, CI: 3.6-5.5, P < .001), as well as the diseases of the nervous system (RR = 3.4, CI: 2.2-5.1, P < .001) and musculoskeletal system/connective tissue (RR = 3.2, CI: 2.4-4.3, P < .001).
Conclusions:
The continuation from single-year to multi-year HU was relatively high. Thus, single-year high utilization is a strong indicator of future persistence in healthcare service utilization. Further research is needed to identify differences in clinical and psychosocial characteristics between single-year high utilizers and those whose high-utilization continues for years.Abstract

Advancing sustainability in agriculture water management: Insights from literature
Abstract
The rising demand for food, escalating water security, the impact of climate change, and global policy initiatives have heightened research focus on sustainability in agricultural water management. However, the field suffers from a lack of conceptual coherence and the persistence of conceptual ambiguity, resulting in limited transferable knowledge production. This study addresses these gaps through a systematic review using the Search, Appraisal, Synthesis, and Analysis (SALSA) framework, encompassing literature published by the end of 2021. Quantitative bibliometric analysis revealed an upsurge in literature (an average annual increase of 33.88% from 1970 to 2021), reflecting alignment with scientific priorities and global policy initiatives. However, conceptual advancement has not kept pace with this rising volume. Keyword proliferation and disciplinary concentration indicate ongoing ambiguity, with sustainability often framed through environmentally centric and context-specific perspectives. The economic and social pillars remain insufficiently explored, and the production of knowledge is disproportionately centered in the Global North. Qualitative synthesis evidence, definitional plurality, and methodological diversity, hindering comparability and transferability across contexts. We integrate our findings into a cohesive thematic structure based on the three pillars of sustainability. Conceptual consolidation and consistent application of sustainability principles require a shift toward more integrative research practices. For this, we recommend focusing on stakeholder co-production, inclusive research agenda, expanded coverage of all three pillars, and increased representation from the Global South.Abstract

Hard carbon as an anode material for sodium ion batteries
Natriumioniakut ovat herättäneet kasvavaa kiinnostusta kustannustehokkaina ja raaka-aineiden saatavuuden kannalta kestävinä vaihtoehtoina litiumioniakuille erityisesti suuren mittakaavan energiavarastointisovellutuksissa. Yksi keskeisistä natriumioniakkujen kehityshaasteista on sopivan anodimateriaalin löytäminen, sillä litiumioniakuissa yleisesti käytetty grafiitti ei sovellu tehokkaasti natriumionien varastointiin. Tästä syystä tutkimus on kohdistunut vaihtoehtoisiin hiilipohjaisiin materiaaleihin, joista kovahiili on noussut yhdeksi lupaavimmista anodimateriaaleista.
Tässä kandidaatintyössä tarkastellaan kovahiilen käyttöä natriumioniakkujen anodimateriaalina. Työssä käsitellään kovahiilen rakennetta, rakenteen karakterisointia röntgendiffraktion ja Raman-spektroskopian avulla sekä kovahiilen valmistusta eri lähtöainesta pyrolyysillä ja hydrotermisellä hiilestyksellä. Lisäksi työssä vertaillaan eri valmistusmenetelmillä tuotettujen kovahiilianodien sähkökemiallisia ominaisuuksia natriumioniakuissa ja arvioidaan heteroatomidouppauksen vaikutusta anodien suorituskykyyn.
Kirjallisuuskatsauksen perusteella kovahiili kykenee varastoimaan natriumioneja useiden rinnakkaisten mekanismien kautta, mikä mahdollistaa kilpailukykyiset kapasiteetit ja hyvän syklistabiilisuuden. Samalla materiaalin kehitykseen liittyy haasteita, kuten matala Coulombinen hyötysuhde ja rakenteen hallinta. Kokonaisuutena kovahiiltä pidetään kuitenkin tällä hetkellä yhtenä realistisimpana anodimateriaalina natriumioniakkujen kehitystä ja tulevia energiavarastointisovellutuksia ajatellen
Dieter Müller - his legacies in Nordic tourism research
Abstract
In November 2025, Professor Dieter Müller of the University of Umeå suddenly passed away while returning from a work meeting in Norway. His unexpected death sent shockwaves through the Nordic tourism and geography communities to which he has long been a significant contributor. This paper celebrates his life and work, which linked theory development with empirical studies and his contributions to Nordic tourism research. Three main themes are identified: second home tourism, Sámi tourism, and Arctic tourism geography. The commonalities of the three areas are that Dieter saw tourism as a dynamic and modernising industrial and social field, significant for wellbeing, and important to regional development and the societal development of the Arctic region. In addition, there is an awareness of tourism’s ethnopolitical significance and, more recently, geopolitical significance, viewing tourism as both a changing force in society and as a product of societal changes.Abstract

Suensaari sauna world : a conceptual site plan for Tornio’s Suensaari district
Suunnitelmapainotteisen diptomityöni aiheena on saunamaailman viitesuunnitelma kaavoitetulle tontille Tornion Suensaaren Rajapuistoon. Suunnittelmaa pohjustan kirjallisella osuudella, jossa tarkastelen alueellisia erityispiirteitä Suomen ja Ruotsin rajavyöhykkeellä ja paikallista saunatoimintaa. Luon myös katsauksen erilaisiin julkisten julkisten saunojen tyyppeihin perinteisistä saunoista nykyisiin uuden aallon saunapalvelukokokonaisuuksiin. Käyn myös seikkaperäisesti läpi rakennusympäristön ominaisuuksia ja vaatimuksia.
Suunnitelmaosuuden tavoitteena on luoda saunakonsepti, joka lisää alueen vetovoimaa ja tukee ranta-alueen muita suunnitelmia. Saunakonsepti on muuntojoustavasti toteutettavissa sekä suunniteltu joustavasti käytettäväksi.
Työni suunnitelmaosuutta määrittäviä tekijöistä tärkeimpiä ovat asemakaava, kaupungin edustajien ohjaus ja ympäristön asettamat reunaehdot. Suunnittelun pohjana ovat myös kaupungin matkailustrategia sekä Europan 14 -kilpailun pohjalta kehitetty aluesuunnitelma. Pyrin suunnitelmassani tuomaan muistumia perinteisestä saunasta osaksi nykyaikaista saunakokonaisuutta.
Suunnittelemani saunakonsepti muodostuu kolmesta erillisestä rakennusmassasta, joista on mahdollista toteuttaa pienimmillään yksi saunamökki tai vaiheistetusti yhtenäinen katettu saunamaailma, joka tarvittaessa voidaan jakaa eri toimijoiden kesken.
Kantava idea konseptissa on mahdollistaa yritystoiminnan vaiheittainen käynnistäminen joustavasti sekä huomioida mahdollinen kausivaihtelu ja tukea erilaisten matkailuyritysten toimintaa. Myös saunamaailman myöhempi laajentuminen ja erilaisten saunatyyppien lisääminen alueelle on mahdollista, ja sitä kautta voidaan luoda puitteita kokonaisuuden ympärille kehittyvälle paikalliselle saunakulttuurille
Dopamine and Parkinson's disease
Parkinsonin tauti on yleinen, etenevä neurodegeneratiivinen sairaus, joka koskettaa maailmanlaajuisesti 1 % yli 60-vuotiaista ihmisistä. Taudissa keskeistä on välittäjäaineena toimivan dopamiinin määrän väheneminen aivojen dopaminergisten hermosolujen tuhoutuessa ja Lewyn kappaleiden muodostuminen näillä alueilla. Dopamiinin väheneminen aivoissa aiheuttaa Parkinsonin taudille tyypillisten oireiden, kuten vapinan, liikkeiden hidastumisen sekä lihasjäykkyyden ilmenemisen. Parkinsonin tauti on parantumaton sairaus, mutta sen oireita voidaan lievittää erilaisten lääkehoitojen sekä muiden hoitomenetelmien, kuten syväaivostimulaation avulla. Parkinsonin taudin muodostumisen mekanismeja ei vielä täysin ymmärretä, mutta tutkimusten avulla on selvitetty useita syitä, mitkä voivat johtaa sairastumiseen (Zhou ym., 2023). Tässä tutkielmassa käydään läpi Parkinsonin tautia sekä dopamiinin roolia kyseisessä sairaudessa
How do business students self-regulate their project management learning? A sequence mining study
Abstract
The relation between learning strategies and academic achievement has been proven to be strong in multiple studies. Still, the connection between micro-level SRL processes and the academic achievement of business students in learning project management remains unstudied. The current study aims to find how sequence mining can identify students using different learning tactics and strategies in terms of micro-level SRL processes. Our findings show that there are differences in the use of tactics and strategies between low and high performing students. Understanding the differences in how low and high performing students apply different micro-level SRL processes can help practitioners identify students in need of support for SRL.Abstract
