Liquid Metal Elastomer Based Coplanar Waveguide Transmission Line for Stretchable and Self‐Healing RF Electronics
Abstract
Insulating and conductive self-healing elastomers represent a high-potential paradigm shift in the development of soft radio-frequency (RF) electronics applications, such as coplanar waveguide (CWP) RF transmission lines. In this article, we present a novel stretchable, self-healing CPW RF transmission line that uses self-healing materials for both the substrate and the conductor. The used self-healing liquid metal elastomer composite achieves a conductivity of approximately 2000 S cm−1 at zero strain. S-parameter measurements of reflection (S11) and transmission (S21) were performed for the coplanar waveguide as the electrical length was uniaxially stretched up to 100%. The stretchable and self-healing CPW RF transmission lines maintain remarkable consistency in transmission response at 1–6 GHz when mechanically stretched at 0%–50% for 1000 stretch-release cycles. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first proof-of-concept demonstration of a fully self-healing CPW transmission line, paving the way for durable and reconfigurable soft RF devices.Abstract

Pre-service teacher identity construction through visual narratives : studying the emotional dimension
Abstract
This arts-based narrative research focuses on the emotional dimension of pre-service teacher identity construction through visual narratives. The research questions are: What shapes and characterizes the emotional dimension of pre-service teacher identity construction? How do visual narratives support pre-service teachers in navigating the emotional dimension of identity construction?
The concept of narrative identity was utilized to theorize pre-service teacher identity as a multidimensional, evolving narrative of who teachers are and who they are becoming. Teacher identity construction is a never-ending process shaped by the past, present, and future. In exploring its emotional dimension, emotions are understood as relational, culturally constructed, and as performed experiences shaped by language and power.
The research materials comprise visual narratives that are stories told through, by, or with visuals. These materials were produced with Finnish pre-service teachers and include two interviews with self-portraits, 36 autobiographical writings with photographs, and four arts-based workshop meetings with five pre-service teachers. Narrative analysis methods were employed.
Findings show that the emotional dimension of pre-service teacher identity construction is characterized by intertwinement of hoping to become a safe adult, vulnerability, and work-related pressure; this dimension is shaped by time, relations and cultural teacher stories; and often characterized by a sense of disillusionment about teachers’ work. Visual narratives support navigating this emotional dimension by enabling self-awareness and new perspectives on what it is to be a teacher, encouraging recognition and challenging of cultural teacher stories as well as the emergence of embodied, non-verbalized narration.
The research contributes to discussions on teacher attrition by illustrating the significance of the emotional dimension of pre-service teacher identity construction. It argues that emotional struggles, notably vulnerability, work-related pressure, and disillusionment, are central for teacher identity construction, and may lead to questioning a future in teaching. Research calls for teacher education to create intentional spaces to address the emotional dimension of teacher identity construction, with visual narratives emerging as promising pedagogical tools for this work.
Tunteiden ulottuvuus on osa opettajaidentiteettiä.
Aineistoa analysoitiin kerronnallisin menetelmin.
Tutkimuksessa tuodaan esiin tunteiden ulottuvuuden suuri merkitys opettajaksi opiskelevien identiteetin rakentumisessa. Tunteisiin liittyvät kamppailut, kuten haavoittuvuus, työhön liittyvä paine ja pettymys opettajan työhön, ovat keskeisiä opettajaidentiteetin rakentumisessa, ja voivat johtaa alanvaihdon harkintaan. Opettajankoulutukseen tulee luoda paikkoja tunteiden ulottuvuuden käsittelemiseksi. Tähän visuaaliset narratiivit ovat lupaava pedagoginen työkalu. Osajulkaisut Holappa, A., Lassila, E. A relational turn for child-computer interaction research? A scoping review
Abstract
‘Relationality’ is increasingly used in human-computer interaction as a lens to support knowledge building and design practice by shifting the attention to inclusion, collaboration, and interconnection as key qualities while studying humans and technology. This scoping literature review analysing 61 studies seeks to understand how academic literature in fields relevant to child-computer interaction has employed the relational lens during the last decade to explore how children engage with the world in formal and non-formal learning contexts. Following PRISMA guidelines, we identify the ontological, epistemological, and ethical implications of adopting a relational perspective in research and practice involving children. We outline main relational practices used in the studies and propose strategies for child–computer interaction researchers to integrate and expand the use of the relational lens in their work particularly within learning contexts, while also extending to broader domains connected to child–computer interaction.Abstract

Biophysical characterization of zinc and DNA binding properties of MRN complex interacting protein
Abstract
Studies in immortalized human mitotic cells demonstrated that MRN Complex Interacting Protein (MRNIP) plays a critical role in genome stability, replication fork protection, and the detection of DNA double-strand breaks via liquid–liquid phase separation. Our earlier work in mice identified its essential role in meiosis during spermatogenesis, namely, meiotic sex chromosome inactivation, highlighting its critical importance for male fertility. Apart from that, MRNIP is a poorly characterized protein with little to no data-based evidence of its biophysical and biochemical properties.
In this study, we provide experimental evidence confirming that the N-terminal domain is indeed folded and contains a zinc-ribbon motif. We demonstrate that MRNIP binds a Zn2+ ion at this site, which plays a structural role in stabilizing the folded domain. Together with structural similarity observed across species, these findings support the conserved nature of the N-terminal domain of MRNIP. Our experimental data confirms that the C-terminal region is disordered.
Furthermore, we show that both the N- and C-terminal regions exhibit binding specificity for DNA rather than RNA, under low-salt conditions, suggesting low-affinity interactions, whereas no DNA or RNA binding was observed under physiological salt conditions. Our findings provide insight into the biophysical and biochemical properties of MRNIP and offer a foundation for advancing structural and functional studies of MRNIP.Abstract

On the Characteristics of the Conjugate Function Enabling Effective Dual Decomposition Methods
Abstract
We investigate a novel characteristic of the conjugate function associated to a generic convex optimization problem, which can subsequently be leveraged for efficient dual decomposition methods. In particular, under mild assumptions, we show that there is a specific region in the domain of the conjugate function such that for any point in the region, there is always a ray originating from that point along which the gradients of the conjugate remain constant. We refer to this characteristic as a fixed gradient over rays (FGOR). We further show that this characteristic is inherited by the corresponding dual function. Then we provide a thorough exposition of the application of the FGOR characteristic to dual subgradient methods. More importantly, we leverage FGOR to devise a simple stepsize rule that can be prepended with state-of-the-art stepsize methods enabling them to be more efficient. Furthermore, we investigate how the FGOR characteristic is used when solving the global consensus problem, a prevalent formulation in diverse application domains. We show that FGOR can be exploited not only to expedite the convergence of the dual decomposition methods but also to reduce the communication overhead. FGOR is extended to nonconvex formulations, and its advantages in stochastic optimization are demonstrated. Numerical experiments using quadratic objectives and a regularized least squares regression with real datasets are conducted. The results show that FGOR can significantly improve the performance of existing stepsize methods and outperform the state-of-the-art splitting methods on average in terms of both convergence behavior and communication efficiency.Abstract

Associations between the thermal spring timing variability and atmospheric teleconnection patterns over the past six decades in Finland
Abstract
The timing of the spring season in the boreal region is shifting under global warming, with profound impacts on ecosystems and hydrological processes. However, the mechanisms driving this transition and its considerable interannual variability are not well described, especially regarding the influence of large-scale atmospheric teleconnection patterns. This study examines the temporal variability of the observed thermal spring season across Finland, a boreal country warming faster than the global average. Key spring timing indices, including onset, end, duration, and growing season onset, were calculated and analyzed using high-resolution (1 km × 1 km) daily mean temperature data from 1961 to 2023. Spatial and temporal patterns were identified through Empirical Orthogonal Function (EOF) decomposition, and their associations with major atmospheric teleconnection patterns were examined. Results indicated that during the past six decades, the spring onset has advanced by 2–6 days/decade, with the most pronounced changes in the coastal and southwestern parts of the country. The duration of the spring season has extended by 3–6 days/decade in the northern areas and along the southwestern coast. The early spring onset was associated with a strong positive phase of the Arctic Oscillation (AO), and delayed spring end and growing season onset were linked to the positive phase of the East Atlantic–West Russia (EAWR) pattern. By contrast, an early growing season start was linked to the positive phase of the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO). The duration of the thermal spring season showed a strong association with the Scandinavian (SCA) pattern.Abstract

Emotions and emotional agency at work: the perspective of trust
Abstract
Recent studies in workplace learning and sociology of work have emphasized the need to better understand how emotions and emotional agency at work are expressed in daily work and how they shape interaction in work communities. Emotional agency, meaning an ability to recognize and influence one’s own and others’ emotions, has been conceptualized as embedded in the socio-cultural environment and practices of a workplace. In this study, we analyse emotions and emotional agency at work from the perspective of trust. Trust and distrust involve expectations and evaluations of others’ intentions and behaviour and profoundly shape communication practices at work. By analysing emotion diaries kept by employees in four different work organizations, we identify emotions and forms of emotional agency displayed in the vertical (i.e., employee-supervisor) and horizontal (i.e., between colleagues) trust relationships at work. In employee-supervisor relationships, emotions indicating trust or distrust were commonly reported in connection with professional recognition, whereas in horizontal relationships, emotions were most often mentioned in the context of sharing information or emotions. Our results show that the forms of emotional agency are different in vertical and horizontal trust relationships at work. While there was less space to affect emotions in vertical relationships, sharing and influencing emotions was common in horizontal relationships. Our study illustrates how emotional agency, as a resource fostered in the work community, can help overcome breaches of trust and positively affect employees’ sense of belonging and learning at work. Responsibility for promoting emotional agency at work lies primarily with the organization’s management and supervisors.Abstract

Using a pet cemetery as a control study to optimise clandestine burial search in the Nordic region with insights into seasonal variation in vegetation, topography and temperature
Abstract
The unique climatic conditions of the Nordic region, particularly the freeze-thaw cycle, present both challenges and opportunities for detecting clandestine burials. By understanding seasonal environmental and vegetational indicators, forensic archaeologists can develop more effective methods for locating burial sites to aid in forensic investigations, archaeological surveys, and humanitarian projects. This pilot study investigates the detection of clandestine burials in a Nordic environment, focusing on a case study of a 50-year-old pet cemetery in Finland. While domestic pets are a poor substitute to human bodies, their burials are very similar to clandestine human burials. The burials are usually small and shallow, and the bodies are often bare or wrapped in cloth or plastic. Pet cemeteries are also often less regulated, in remote locations, and have less visitors, allowing for discreet research. The study site was monitored for changes in ground temperature, vegetation and topography during the thawing period 2021–2024. The aim of the study was to determine whether burials show seasonal variation that would make them easier to detect during a specific season. Ground surface temperature surveys revealed significant differences between burials and undisturbed ground during early spring. Vegetation analysis identified early blooming flowers and specific persistent plants growing over graves as potential indicators of past burials. Topographical changes, including mounds and depressions, were more pronounced during the thawing cycle, aiding in the identification of burials. These findings are valuable, for instance, for detecting clandestine and forgotten graves in historical contexts, such as old cemeteries, mental hospitals, prisons and childrens’ homes.Abstract
