One of the most important problems that faced Nigeria as a nation since its Independence some thirty-two years ago was the lack of a viable, enduring and. positive political culture. During the colonial period, politicians from all nooks and corners of the country agreed on the struggle for Independence. To this end, they severally and collectively struggled against the British until Independence was finally achieved. Although they resolved that Nigeria should remain a united polity, irrespective of our differences, the politicians have never been able to evolve political parties and plan politics such that would ensure an enduring republic. The first republic (1960 -1966) did not travel far before it was beset with all sorts of problems, violence, rigged elections, bogged up census, corruption, and above all, lack of political tolerance and accommodation, which led to the intervention of the army in a coup in Jan., 1966. Even with the Army on the political saddle, we had to fight a civil war (1967 -1970) to keep the country as one entity and polity. From 1970 when the civil war ended to the collapse of the second republic in 1983, the country has had two Military Governments(1970-75; 1975-1978) and one Civilian administration (1978 - 1983).Background to the political bureau report; Two-party system: The IBB legacy; Local Government reforms; Open ballot and democracy; The centre for democratic studies and the foundations of a new political order; NEC and the new political order; The 1991 census of Nigeria - A comparative Study

History is a product of continuous interaction between man and the environment. Seven years is nothing much in the life of a nation particularly one with the size and complexity of Nigeria. But a seven-year period during which fundamental assumptions were challenged and modified when phenomenal changes were effected in Nigeria's social, economic, and political scene, and during which issues hitherto reserved for the esoteric class, corporate bodies, and campus eggs heads became subjected to public debate and reactions deserve to be carefully documented and rationally analyzed. The 1985-92 period will be a fascinating subject in Nigeria's history books. Historians and social scientists will find the sheer weight and volume of decisions taken, their immediate and lasting effect on the country's outlook, economy, and body politic too attractive to ignore. Even before the Babangida regime signed off, the men who captained the ship stated the policies they enunciated, the implementation, and the intended and accidental consequences were already being studied. The economic situation pre-August 1985; Structural Adjustment Programme (SAP) aims, objectives and rationale; The structural adjustment program: Implementation, its gains, and losses; Agriculture and rural development under the Babangida administration; Industrial development and production, including small-scale activities; Oil in Nigeria's economy; Post military Nigeria the next economic agenda

Africa and the Wider World (in three Volumes) is based on Nigeria's new Senior Secondary School and Teachers' College (TCII) curriculum for history. The new history curriculum focuses principal lyon Nigeria and Africa, as well as the relationship to Africa of the histories of such other regions of the world as Europe, America, the Middle East and Asia. As against the previous method ofstudying the histories of the individual regions of the world in isolation, the histories of other people arc now studied with a view to understanding their effect on Nigeria and Africa. Africa and the Wider World has, therefore, been written to guide the student's understanding of his environment and the influences that have shaped that environment. The demarcation of the three volumes of the scries hasbeen designed in such a way that the student progresses naturally in his history studies from the earlier timesto the contemporary period. Volume 1 studies the student's own and neighbouring areas, on which he may already have had some information. Since this section forms the background to the study, not only has the curriculum been adequately covered, but and attempt has also been made by the authors to enrich this book by including some topics not necessarily specified in the curriculum. Studies on Asante and Dahomey, forinstance, have been added in orderto complete the picture of West African responses to the internal and external challenges of the nineteenth century.Zanzibar and the East African coastlands before the rise of the Omani empire; Sayyid Said and the rise of the Omani empire; European activities and the Omani empire; Buganda in the nineteenth century; New developments and British occupation of Buganda; Ethiopia before the rise of Emperor Theodore to power; Emperor Theodore II and his reformist policies in an attempt to unify the country under the monarchy: 1855 -1868; Developments under Emperor Yohannes IV: Egyptian aggression and renewal of European interests in Ethiopia: 1872 -1889; Revolution and the rise of new states in the Northern Nguni area of South Africa: C. 1790 -1818; The rise of Shaka and the Mfecane: 1818 -1836; The frontier wars and the British occupation of the Cape Colony; The great Trek and its consequences
