Climate Change Anxiety and Hope Both Predict Action: A Moderation Analysis

    No full text
Climate change is associated with extreme weather events that have devastating effects on communities worldwide. These events disrupt ecosystems, damage infrastructure, and influence physical and mental well-being. Urgent action is needed. Prior studies demonstrate that people are more likely to take action if they feel anxious about climate change and if they feel hopeful they can make a difference. However, we hypothesized that anxiety and hope would interact: that anxiety would only predict action when people felt hopeful. Therefore, we used path analysis to determine if hope moderates the relation between anxiety and action. In a cross-sectional design, 500 United States MTurk workers completed the Climate Change Hope Scale, Climate Change Anxiety Scale, and Climate Change Action Inventory. We found anxiety strongly predicted action, hope weakly predicted action, and being less than 30 years old weakly predicted action. However, hope did not moderate the relation between anxiety and action. Thus, people who are anxious about climate change engage in similar amounts of action regardless of their level of hope. Because anxiety and hope both had positive relations with action, future research could determine if hope and anxiety have causal impacts on action and look for ways of increasing urgency without dampening hope

Effect of In-Season Potentiation and Priming on Jump Height in Collegiate D1 American Football Players

    No full text
Neuromuscular priming and post-activation potentiation (PAP) are techniques utilized to increase nervous system excitation, muscle force, and rate of force development during subsequent muscle contractions in sport. PAP is a commonly used approach that has the potential to influence neuromuscular status monitoring and flagging, and optimize power training. Specifically, jump height is an important parameter in athletic performance and assessing inter-limb asymmetries. Thus, the purpose of this paper is to report the effects of different PAP strategies on jump height during a competitive D1 American football season. These findings will inform practitioners on optimal PAP strategies and their implications for neuromuscular status monitoring

Employers’ Perceptions of Workplace Readiness Skills

    No full text
Employability skills are continually changing, and the workforce provides the transparency needed for the success of business employment. Workplace readiness skills and human capital theory form the backbone for organizational success and sustainability. This study examined employers’ perceptions of workplace readiness skills at the expected proficiency level of an entry-level employee, the average level of skill for an entry-level employee, and the level of importance of the skill to their industry. The Virginia Workplace Readiness Skills have impacted employers and prepared students for the workplace. The results indicated that the workplace readiness skills mentioned in the literature align with the required workplace readiness skills taught in all CTE courses in Virginia. However, employers did mention additions such as empathy

Reported Value of Culturally Responsive Teaching Practices of Virginia Agricultural Education Teachers

    No full text
To address the increasing diversity in schools and the monolithic culture of teachers, researchers have called for pedagogies that reflect the diverse and pluralistic identities of students. While core academic areas have long adopted culturally relevant pedagogy, school-based agricultural education (SBAE) has lagged behind. This study aimed to determine the views of agricultural education teachers in Virginia on culturally responsive pedagogy dispositions and identify areas of professional development need. Teachers valued the differences among students and the communities in which their schools are located. However, results revealed a need for professional development in using the local community as a resource and incorporating students’ cultural identities into instruction. Mean weighted discrepancy scores indicated that teachers found these practices necessary, but they lacked confidence in their implementation. While teachers did not indicate a need for training in understanding their own identities, findings support the need for programs that foster cultural competence and build inclusive curricula in SBAE

The Causes and Impact of Evictions in Southern Nevada

    No full text
As the Southern Nevada region continues to quickly grow, evictions have become a structural feature of the region’s rental market. The region has one of the highest eviction filing rates in the country and this trend has continued to increase in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic. This paper examines the availability of market-rate affordable housing and the expansion of subsidized affordable housing to understand how the local housing conditions contribute to the number of evictions in Southern Nevada. Additionally, the paper studies local legal processes, such as the summary eviction system and habitability procedures, to understand the relationship between those practices and the total number of evictions. Using demographic and spatial data, the paper analyzes which communities are most impacted by evictions. The analysis continues with an examination of the downstream impacts of evictions, including an elevated risk of experiencing homelessness. These outcomes are used to assess the broader social and fiscal costs of eviction, such as emand for public services, added strain on the legal system, and long-term economic impacts on individuals who experience homelessness. Furthermore, the paper examines historical eviction protections and diversion programs that have been implemented in Southern Nevada. Finally, the paper offers policy recommendations aimed at improving equity throughout the eviction process, expanding tenants\u27 access to legal information and other resources, and strengthening data compilation systems to better understand the impact of evictions

Sexual and Gender Minority Individuals in Our Community: Policy Recommendations to Address Discrimination-Related Stresses

    No full text
Sexual and gender minority (SGM) individuals face a wide range of mental and physical health challenges, which contribute to higher rates of suicide. SGM individuals encounter distress, discrimination, and in some cases, harmful anti-LGBTQIA+ laws and policies that contribute to additional mental and physical health stress. A web-based survey of 1,034 SGM participants in the United States measured the types and frequency of discrimination occurrences and related distress. The survey considers the variety of interactions between individuals and their relationships, while also measuring the community and societal factors that affect health outcomes for SGM individuals. This research evaluates many variables for discrimination-related stresses for SGM individuals. Recommendations are presented for effective laws and public policies that protect members of the SGM community from discrimination and consider the rights of other segments of our society

Achilles Tendon Morphology Adaptations in Chronic Post-Stroke Hemiparesis: A Comparative Analysis With Neurologically Intact Controls

    No full text
Introduction: In individuals with chronic post-stroke hemiparesis, slow walking speed is a significant concern related to inadequate propulsion of the paretic limb. However, an overlooked factor is this population\u27s altered morphology of the Achilles tendon, which may compromise the propulsive forces by the paretic limb. This study aimed to explore changes in Achilles tendon morphology, including gross thickness and intra-tendinous collagen fiber bundle organization, following stroke-induced brain lesions. Methods: Fifteen individuals with chronic post-stroke hemiparesis (at least 6 months post-stroke) and 19 neurologically intact controls participated. Ultrasound imaging was used to evaluate Achilles tendon thickness and collagen organization in the paretic and non-paretic limbs of post-stroke participants, as well as in the right limb (control limb) of the neurologically intact control group. Results and discussion: Compared to control individuals, the paretic limb in individuals post-stroke showed increased tendon thickness at the Achilles tendon insertion and 2 cm above it. The collagen fiber bundle at the Achilles tendon insertion of the paretic limb showed reduced organization compared to that in the control limb. Individuals post-stroke also exhibited slower walking speed, and increased plantarflexor muscle tone in the paretic limb compared to controls. In conclusion, individuals with chronic post-stroke hemiparesis demonstrated tendon thickening and collagen disorganization in the paretic limb, particularly at the insertion site of the Achilles tendon, likely due to an abnormal loading environment influenced by increased plantarflexor muscle tone, muscle co-activation, and muscle disuse and atrophy. These changes may increase tendon compliance, impair force transmission and propulsion, and contribute to slower walking speed. Addressing Achilles tendon integrity should be incorporated as a component of strategies to improve neuromuscular control in this population
