Slot floor layout strategy: Optimizing revenues vis-à-vis game location and popularity

    No full text
Slot revenues are critical to the success of many of the world’s casinos. The rising cost of slot machines has often resulted in fewer games on the floor and fewer purchases of new games. Such conditions create choices for operators seeking to optimize slot revenues with their existing game mix, which invariably includes both high- and low-performing titles. Like game titles, the quality of all bank locations on the slot floor is not the same. Thus, operators must decide whether it is better to place the popular titles in the best locations and the less popular titles in the challenging locations, or the converse. The results of our paired-samples t test suggested it is the converse, as that combination produced a statistically and economically significant increase in daily t-win, over the course of a 120-day sample. Alternatively stated, the combination of high-performing titles in the bad location and low-performing titles in the good location outperformed the opposite combination. The observed increase in the mean daily t-win for the prevailing configuration was 21%, dropping to 18% with a single outlier omitted. The research design and method advanced herein offers a simple, rigorous, and objective means of examining this important question. Academically, this work extended research in the areas of both the servicescape and performance-potential studies aimed at the evaluation of individual slot machines

It is Not Clear How Well Physical Activity Promotion Materials Are Understood: Findings from a Rapid Literature Review

    No full text
Topics in Exercise Science and Kinesiology Volume 6: Issue 1, Article 6, 2025. Efforts to promote physical activity and other health-related behaviors are more effective when resource materials are understood by a wide and diverse audience. Before our lab’s previous investigations (Thomas et al., 2024), only one study seemed to use the cloze procedure to directly test the comprehension (i.e., readability) of physical activity promotion material (Cardinal & Seidler, 1995). Thus, this rapid literature review sought to (a) determine the extent the cloze procedure has been used to study physical activity promotion material comprehension in lay adults and (b) collate detail about its validity and reliability for future reference by health promotion practitioners and researchers. A systematic search was performed of four academic databases, using “cloze procedure” as a key term (conducted February through March 2021). To be included, articles had to be peer-reviewed research, written in English, and used the cloze procedure to study health material comprehension/readability in lay adults. Eight articles were included for descriptive analysis (4 primary studies, 4 systematic reviews). One finding was that popular health literacy measures (e.g., TOFHLA) use a modified version of the cloze procedure. Good validity and reliability were shown for the original and modified cloze procedure (e.g., correlation with other direct measures like multiple-choice test scores; using a test-retest approach, Cronbach’s alpha, respectively). Only one study used the original or modified cloze procedure to study physical activity promotion material (Cardinal & Seidler, 1995). The cloze procedure is under-utilized in testing physical activity promotion material readability, which limits understanding their suitability for health promotion practic

Bridging the Divide: Gaps in Mental Health Resources for K-12 Students in Nevada

    No full text
Since 2014, Nevada has consistently ranked among the bottom five states, if not last, in the nation for youth mental health, with more than 34,000 youth reporting experiencing thoughts of suicide in 2025 (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2023). The state’s student-to-counselor ratio stands at 456 to 1, nearly double the recommended 250 to 1 (American School Counselor Association, 2024). In Southern Nevada, these challenges are compounded with persistent provider shortages, chronic underfunding, and a fragmented system of care. This policy brief focuses on the barriers preventing students from receiving timely, effective mental health support in school settings and examines how workforce shortages, underfunding, and a fragmented system contribute to the problem. It then offers three interdependent policy solutions: increasing dedicated funding, expanding school-based telehealth access, and strengthening cross-sector community partnerships to build a more equitable, sustainable mental health infrastructure for K 12 students across Southern Nevada

Esports: Women, Harassment, and Paving the Way for Equity

It all began with a patent. In 1947, Cathode Ray Tube Amusement Device, the first video game, featured oscilloscope graphics similar to World War II radar screens. As targets appeared on the screen, players maneuvered light beans in an attempt to destroy them. Or... maybe it’s not. Whether or not Cathode Ray Tube Amusement Device is actually the first video game to be invented depends on your school of thought. Technically, Cathode Ray Tube Amusement Device is mechanical and does not rely on programming. It does have the distinction of being the first electronic game to be issued a patent and did use a monitor. However, none of the game graphics are computer generated and no memory devices are required. Did the esports origin story spring from this humble beginning? The debate continues..

Revisiting Bennett’s Hypothesis: The Unintended Effects of Student Financial Aid on the Cost of College

    No full text
As higher education strives to be more inclusive, escalating tuition costs pose a significant barrier to accessibility. Government efforts to increase federal financial aid aim to mitigate this issue, but according to William Bennett’s hypothesis, such interventions may inadvertently increase college costs. This study investigates Bennett’s Hypothesis with the latest cross-sectional data from the National Center for Education Statistics. Focusing on 2-year and 4-year U.S. public and private nonprofit colleges, the study examines the effects of government and institutional financial aid on the cost of attendance. The analysis is structured around financial aid packaging institutional, charging variances, and financial aid determinants that provide evidence supporting Bennett’s Hypothesis, revealing a correlation between financial aid and rising tuition costs across different types of institutions

Arrhythmogenic Right Ventricular Cardiomyopathy: A Comprehensive Review

    No full text
Arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVC) is characterized by structural abnormalities, arrhythmias, and a spectrum of genetic and clinical manifestations. Clinically, ARVC is structurally distinguished by right ventricular dilation due to increased adiposity and fibrosis in the ventricular walls, and it manifests as cardiac arrhythmias ranging from non-sustained ventricular tachycardia to sudden cardiac death. Its prevalence has been estimated to range from 1 in every 1000 to 5000 people, with its large range being attributed to the variability in genetic penetrance from asymptomatic to significant burden. It is even suggested that the prevalence is underestimated, as the presence of genotypic mutations does not always lead to clinical manifestations that would facilitate diagnosis. Additionally, while set criteria have been in place since the 1990s, newer understanding of this condition and advancements in cardiac technology have prompted multiple revisions in the diagnostic criteria for ARVC. Novel discoveries of gene variants predisposing patients to ARVC have led to established screening techniques while providing insight into genetic counseling and management. This review aims to provide an overview of the genetics, pathophysiology, and clinical approach to ARVC. It will also focus on clinical presentation, ARVC diagnostic criteria, electrophysiological findings, including electrocardiogram characteristics, and imaging findings from cardiac MRI, 2D, and 3D echocardiogram. Current management options—including anti-arrhythmic medications, device indications, and ablation techniques—and the effectiveness of treatment will also be reviewed

A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis on the Role of Somatostatin Therapy in Non-Variceal Gastrointestinal Bleeding

    No full text
Background and Aims: Non-variceal upper gastrointestinal bleeding (NVUGIB) is a common cause of hospitalizations, with proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) being the mainstay treatment. However, there is a lack of high-level evidence to show if adjunctive medical therapy (somatostatin and its analogs) can improve outcomes. This systematic review and meta-analysis aim to evaluate the outcomes of PPIs with adjunctive therapy versus PPI monotherapy in treating NVUGIB in an in-patient setting. Methods: Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) checklist, major databases were systematically searched to retrieve English-only, original studies, published from 1 January 2000 to 31 December 2023, investigating NVUGIB only. The primary outcomes included the mortality rate within 7 days of therapy, rebleeding rate within 7 days of therapy, and length of hospital stay. Results: Seven studies with 789 patients had a pooled mortality rate of 2.0% (95% CI, 0–4.0%), and the pooled risk ratio was 1.11 (95% CI, 0.50–2.48; p = 0.79) between PPI monotherapy and PPIs with adjunctive medical therapy. The pooled rebleeding rate was 13% (95% CI, 6–20%) and the risk ratio was 1.04 (95% CI, 0.73–1.48; p = 0.83). The pooled average length of stay in the hospital was 5.47 days (95% CI, 3.72–7.21 days), with insignificant weighted differences between the two groups. No statistically significant differences were noted in surgical management risk ratios or amount of blood transfusion. Conclusions: Among patients with NVUGIB, adjunctive medical therapy offered no clinical benefits given the statistically insignificant differences in the primary outcomes. However, this conclusion is limited by the considerable variability in treatment protocols, weak control of confounding variables, and missing clinical information in the original studies. Therefore, better-quality, large-scale randomized controlled trials are needed, ideally using standardized somatostatin dosing, timing, delivery routes, and clearly defined inclusion criteria to more accurately evaluate the role of somatostatin in NVUGIB management

Concurrent Presentation of an Anomalous Right Coronary Artery and an Unusual Bovine Arch: Case Report

    No full text
Anomalous coronary arteries from the opposite sinus of Valsalva are rare but can increase the risk for life-threatening complications. We present the case of a 59-year-old man who was found to have an anomalous right coronary artery and a rare bovine arch variant with a single common brachiocephalic trunk, along with severe proximal left anterior descending artery stenosis on left heart catheterization. The patient underwent a minimally invasive coronary artery bypass graft and unroofing of the anomalous coronary artery. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of these concurrent anomalies in an individual without tetralogy of Fallot
