    Assessing Thermal Comfort in a Landmark Urban Park: A Case Study and Methodological Framework of Alamo Square in San Francisco, USA

    Urban green spaces are increasingly challenged by climate stressors, yet strategies for climate-adaptive renewal are often difficult to evaluate in culturally and historically significant sites. This study exames Alamo Square in San Francisco, a globally recognized tourist landmark parkas a single-case analysis of how incremental reforestation and shading interventions influence human activity patterns and thermal comfort. This study integrates geotagged social media data (Flickr/Instagram), ENVI-met microclimate simulations, and spatial statistical analyses (Kernel Density Estimation, hot spot analysis). Focusing on Alamo Square’s reforestation initiativeaimed at doubling tree density with drought-tolerant species-the research reveals that pre-intervention activity clustered densely near the iconic “Painted Ladies,” driven by tourism. Post-reforestation, vegetation significantly reduced summer PET values, dispersing heat stress zones, but introduced winter cold zones and spatial mismatches between shaded areas and emergent activity hubs. Rest facilities (e.g., shaded seating) consistently outperformed entertainment amenities in attracting users, highlighting their role in thermal adaptation. This work innovatively combines dynamic crowdsourced data with human-centered thermal metrics to expose seasonal trade-offs, advocating for designs that align cooling interventions with activity hot spots while mitigating winter discomfort. The findings demonstrate that effective urban green space design requires balancing ecological goals (e.g., canopy restoration) with human-centered strategies, such as strategic shading of high-traffic paths. By bridging environmental modeling and behavioral analytics, this study offers transferable insights and practical ecological indicators for landmark or tourism-driven parks to evaluate thermal comfort and enhance preparedness for future climatic challenges

    Case Study: Effect of Stroboscopic Vision Training During a Softball Season

    Topics in Exercise Science and Kinesiology Volume 6: Issue 1, Article 3, 2025. This case study examined the effects of stroboscopic vision training during an entire varsity softball season for a 16-year-old female. Stroboscopic vision training uses specialized glasses with crystallized fluid that flickers, intermittently impeding vision, a technique that enhances visual performance. The stroboscopic glasses were worn two to three times a week during hitting and fielding skills. The central hypothesis was that the stroboscopic vision training would enhance softball vision performance. The central hypothesis was tested using these specific aims: 1) batting statistics for a year with no stroboscopic versus a year with the stroboscopic vision training; and 2) vision-specific measurements for tracking, peripheral vision, and eye teaming. For the first aim, coaches recorded on-base percentage, batting average, slugging percentage, and hard-hit ball percentage. The second aim was tested by an ophthalmologist in a vision therapy center, with developmental eye movement, vergence ranges, randot stereopsis, and accommodative ranges measured. The innovative application in this study was combining on-field performance and vision testing using stroboscopic goggles. Data from batting statistics demonstrated a 136% increase in batting average and a 168% increase in slugging percentage. Post-test vision measurements increased base in/eyes relaxed by two diopters. Vision measurements demonstrated improved overall reaction time and peripheral fusion (peripheral vision). Limitations are present in the results due to single-subject case study design; follow-up studies with larger sample sizes and control groups to validate these findings are needed. Future research with a more rigorous experimental design will build upon this case study

    Examining the relationship between casino employee gambling involvement, demographic characteristics, and responsible gambling program perceptions

    This study investigated past-year gambling involvement (i.e., frequency and breadth) among employees at MGM Resorts International (MGM) and their views on the effectiveness of MGM’s responsible gambling (RG) program (i.e., GameSense). It also examined associations between these views and employees’ gambling behavior, as well as their demographic and work-related characteristics. We used cross-sectional data drawn from a broader research project, which surveyed a large sample of MGM employees (n = 814) in 2020. Our analysis revealed that gambling frequency varied by ethnicity, department affiliations, and property location, while gambling breadth differed based on gender and department affiliations. We employed hierarchical multiple regression analysis to identify the factors that predicted perceived RG program effectiveness. This study identified four significant predictors of employees’ perceptions regarding the effectiveness of RG programs: (1) Asian ethnicity, (2) department affiliation (high or low contact with gamblers), (3) the location of their workplace (Las Vegas or elsewhere), and (4) tenure in the gaming industry in years. Employees identifying as Asian, those with longer industry tenure, or those working in high-contact departments or at non-Las Vegas properties tended to view the RG programs as more effective. These findings highlight the importance of developing RG training strategies tailored to the diverse backgrounds of employees and can be applied to enhance RG programming at land-based casinos

    All Set for Next Week (2024) was a coffin‐shaped coffee table that formed the focal point of my Honey, I’m Home! Midway Exhibition—a core requirement for my advancement to candidacy, which I successfully completed. Revisiting the nostalgic domestic imagery of mid‐twentieth‐century sitcoms like The Honeymooners and I Love Lucy, this piece examined the precarious nature of home, shifts in gender roles, and the collective reshaping of mourning rituals during the COVID‐19 pandemic. Made from red oak, a wood historically linked to coffin‐making, the table evoked the memory of my grandfather’s passing while probing deeper questions surrounding inherited skill sets and overlooked funerary traditions. Informed by Gaston Bachelard’s phenomenological perspective on the home and Mona Hadler’s ideas on “destruction as transformation,” All Set for Next Week (2024) questioned established notions of comfort and finality, inviting viewers to consider how memory, grief, and identity intersect within ordinary domestic spaces
