    Reimagining Learning, Integrity, and Creativity in the Age of AI: A Discussion with Summit Contributors

    As AI technologies–including independently acting AI agents–become more sophisticated in research and writing, solving complex problems, and even evaluating student work, higher education faces a time of disruptive shifts. The very tools that promise to enhance learning personalization and increase teaching task efficiency are unsettling our most fundamental assumptions about the processes and goals of education, developed over centuries in academic traditions. We are compelled to reconsider what teaching and learning mean now, in the age of AI. Bringing together educators, researchers, and practitioners, this session confronts rapidly emerging new realities to reimagine teaching and learning in an era of intelligent automation. Together, we will discuss how universities can ensure that the use of AI technologies in higher education enhances learning and knowledge creation, and that academic integrity and human creativity and discernment remain at the heart of academic practice. This culminating discussion draws on insights from across the sessions. The presentations in this summit reveal the profoundly shifting landscape in higher education, and span a wide range of perspectives and practices—from reimagining academic integrity in the keynote The Opposite of Cheating to personalizing learning through Build Your Own GPT: Tailoring AI to Your Academic Needs. Faculty across disciplines share innovative approaches in Process over Product: Rethinking Assignments in the Age of AI, in Reflections Through AI: Visualizing Learning, Emotion, and Mindset, in AI Across the Disciplines: Bridging Perspectives in STEM and the Humanities and in Using NotebookLM in the Undergraduate Classroom. Other sessions examine design and pedagogy in specialized fields, including Teaching, Building, Learning: AI in Nursing Education, AI-assisted Avenues for Linguistic Assessment and Intervention Methods in Speech-Language Pathology, AI in Medical Practice and Education: A Work in Progress. Presentations also engage with timely conversations about assessment and equity in Grading in the Age of AI: Equity, Transparency, and the Role of Human Feedback, explore alternative modes of demonstrating learning in From Paper to Podium: AI Proof Delivery, and experiment with engagement strategies in Gamifying Generative AI to Facilitate Students’ Development of GenAI Fluency. The Summit also highlights innovation in course material creation with Design as Dialogue: Working with AI in Course Creation and Artificial Intelligence, Accessibility, and Inclusion, examines social implications in Robots as Social and Behavioral Change Agents in the Classroom, and explores creativity and critical thinking in Prompting Creativity: Using Generative AI in the Humanities Classroom. Collectively, these presentations offer a multifaceted view of how AI is reshaping teaching, learning, and integrity across the academy—challenging educators to rethink what authentic human learning means in the age of intelligent machines

    Nevada\u27s Healthcare and Education Workforce Pipelines

    With ongoing workforce shortages in K-12 education, healthcare, and mental and behavioral health—occupations central to the HEAL (health, education, administration, and literacy) economy—this brief utilizes the Nevada P-20 to Workforce Research Data System (NPWR) and data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics to explore the current and projected landscape for these workforces in Nevada. Examining the demographic characteristics of those participating in focused career and technical education training and those earning relevant postsecondary credentials illuminates gender disparities in Nevada’s healthcare and education workforce pipelines. After reviewing the current state of these workforces and assessing the available NPWR data, we offer policy recommendations to improve Nevada’s education, healthcare, and mental and behavioral health workforce pipelines both now and in the future

    Performance Optimization-Focused Family Behavior Therapy to Address Verbal and Physical Aggression in an Adolescent Diagnosed with Bipolar I Disorder: A Case Report

    Bipolar disorder is a chronic and debilitating condition characterized by fluctuations in mood that significantly interfere with day-to-day functioning. While symptom onset typically occurs in early adulthood, manifestations can occur at an earlier developmental stage. Early intervention has been shown to be effective in decreasing long-term negative outcomes and decreasing symptom severity in serious mental illness (SMI) populations, and as such, early intervention treatment programs may have particular benefits for individuals who are early in the course of bipolar disorder. However, there is little information regarding the effectiveness of these programs. This thesis reports a case of an adolescent client, Blake, diagnosed with bipolar I disorder, in accordance with the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual Fifth Edition, Text Revision (DSM-5-TR), who will participate in an evidence-supported novel intervention, Performance Optimization-Focused Family Behavior Therapy (POFFBT), within the context of a Coordinated Specialty Care-Early Treatment Program (CSC ETP) designed to treat early bipolar disorder. Blake completed a comprehensive standardized test battery designed to establish diagnostic criteria, evaluate presenting symptoms, and assess cognition. He attended weekly therapeutic appointments in an evidence-based CSC ETP that provided services over 13.5 months. CSC ETP services were provided by an interdisciplinary treatment team and included medication management, psychotherapy, education and employment support, peer support, case management, and family education. Standardized assessments to determine improvements in symptoms and functioning were conducted on a regularly scheduled basis (weekly, monthly, quarterly). Outcomes presented are decreased aggression, indicated by routine assessments and reports from Blake’s family, and increased cognition. This longitudinal analysis provides support for the use of the POFFBT within the context of a CSC ETP to optimize various aspects of the adolescent’s functioning

    Posthuman Vital Materialism: An Enquiry Concerning Human Nature and Affects Through Dualistic and Monistic Views Regarding the Nature of Reality

    This dissertation project is committed to defining the vital posthuman theory and investigating the evolution of philosophical thought concerning the definition of the terms human, being, state, society, justice, monism, dualism, and others. The theory under focus here operates on six central principles: 1. Radical Relationality (Retrospective Anticipation); 2. Interwoven Meaning and Self (Inversion principle); 3. Distributed Agency and Decentralized Ethics (Decentralization of human); 4. Transitory, Iterative Identities (Language as Feedback system); 5. Deconstruction of Binary Oppositions (Paradox principle); and 6. Extended Epistemologies and Hyperreal Consciousness (non-human cognitive connections). In order to illustrate and unpack the vital posthuman theory, this dissertation analyzes the progress of Continental Rationalism and British Empiricism by extrapolating how informational patterns and material installations operate in confluence. The six principles invoke the difference in contemporary theoretical positions regarding posthumanism. The points of disagreement often cited by posthumanism researchers include configurations that view the theory as historical/transhistorical, a state of being/thinking related/unrelated to technology while emerging from an individual/system. The key hypothesis of this project rests on the idea of de-anthropocentralization. If traditional humanist human essence and consciousness were defined by freedom from other people’s will, the vital posthuman theory does not challenge the freedom but the notion that there was an a priori self-will that is distinct from other-will. This dissertation offers an argument that the vital posthuman transformation is defined by the reconciliation of the monist and dualist doctrines. This dissertation outlines theoretical vital posthuman principles followed by a set of illustrations of the theory’s literary applicability

    Bridging the Gap: A Quality Improvement Initiative to Enhance Interoception Resources for Pediatric Oncology OTs

    Chemotherapy administered to children and youth diagnosed with pediatric cancers may induce side effects such as pain, fatigue, anxiety, and other distressing symptoms that could impact the ability to meet occupational needs and desires in daily functioning. The occupational therapy discipline incorporates mindfulness strategies to target these symptoms for increased body awareness in children with cancer, though interoception’s role within the pediatric oncology population is obscure. Furthermore, there are implicated demands described in the literature for more established pediatric oncology rehabilitation programs to attend to the specific needs of the population and to advocate for occupational therapy’s role in the emerging practice area for streamlined service delivery. This capstone project executed a quality improvement initiative at the Children’s Medical Center of Summerlin Hospital, which has a pediatric oncology rehabilitation program, with efforts to add to the site’s resources by providing interoception-based materials that may guide practice and enhance OT service delivery for their pediatric oncology population. The site’s therapy department had an existing pediatric resource binder, which this capstone project intended to expand through the addition of interoceptive resources. The capstone student collected feedback to determine if the resources added were accessible in the binder, relevant to the site’s pediatric oncology caseload, and clinically usable to inform treatment and care. The quality improvement initiative overall received positive feedback for all three core themes, aligning with the project’s overall goal to promote clinical reasoning with evidence-based practice when delivering occupational therapy services to the emerging practice of pediatric oncology

    Understanding Hospitality Students’ Perspectives Towards Hospitality Program Resources: A Qualitative Research

    Hospitality students are qualified and well-trained candidates to meet the growing labor demand of the hospitality industry. It is worth noting that not all hospitality students are attracted to hospitality careers. While previous hospitality education research has shown interest in the role of hospitality program resources in students’ career intentions, there is a significant gap in qualitative research that investigates students’ detailed perspectives on how these resources can shape their career decisions. Drawing on Social Cognitive Career Theory (SCCT), this case study explores students’ perspectives on their resource experiences, needs, and perceived SCCT factors associated with their career and graduate studies intentions. The data were generated through 17 online semi-structured interviews of hospitality students enrolled in a southwestern four-year hospitality program. Specifically, this case study’s findings revealed that hospitality program resources have an important role in helping students discover, identify, and develop their career interests and future plans. The most needed resources expected by students are redesigning hospitality courses, assigning jobs (including guaranteeing internships), and learning specific positions (e.g., job title, duties, daily work content, promotion paths, etc.) that are available in the hospitality industry. Consistent with the SCCT’s theoretical framework, students’ social cognitive variables, perceived contextual barriers and support, and additional personal factors work together and shape their career and academic development. Accordingly, the findings are valuable for hospitality programs to understand and better accommodate students’ needs, offering resources that can support students’ development

    Gaming Participation: An Occupational Therapy Approach to Esports Ergonomics

    Competitive e-sport gamers are increasingly at risk for repetitive strain injuries (RSIs) due to the prolonged and repetitive nature of their gaming demands. Current healthcare protocols often overlook the unique ergonomic needs of this population, potentially leading to decreased occupational performance and dysfunction. This study aims to develop and evaluate an evidence-based ergonomic protocol tailored specifically to e-sport gamers who primarily use a mouse and keyboard, with the goal of reducing the risk of musculoskeletal injuries and enhancing gaming performance. Grounded in the principles of occupational therapy, the study emphasizes occupation-based interventions that address the specific occupational demands of e-sport gamers. Using a quasi-experimental convergent mixed methods design, the study will be conducted over the span of 6 weeks, involving esports athletes aged 18 to 30. Quantitative data on gaming performance and ergonomic risk factors was collected using Kovaaks software and the Rapid Entire Body Assessment (REBA), while qualitative insight was gathered through a focus group interview. It is hypothesized that the implementation of the ergonomic protocol will lead to improved posture, decreased muscle tension, and enhanced gaming performance. The findings of this study will contribute to the advancement of occupational therapy practice by providing targeted, occupation-based interventions that promote the health, well-being, and occupational performance of esports athletes

    Assessment Of Vegetation Dynamics After South Sugar Loaf and Snowstorm Wildfires Using Remote Sensing Spectral Indices

    Wildfires are increasingly common in sagebrush ecosystems across the western United States, leading to vegetation loss and ecosystem restructuring. This study investigated vegetation recovery within two large Nevada burn scars, the Snowstorm Fire of 2017 and the South Sugar Loaf Fire of 2018. Landsat 8 surface reflectance imagery supplied multi temporal spectral data, and vegetation burn severity was mapped with the difference Normalized Burn Ratio. The research aimed to quantify how vegetation health spectral indicators respond over time across severity gradients and to detect shifts in land cover composition from pre fire to post fire conditions.Four spectral indices—NDVI, MSI, MCARI2, and land surface temperature—were assessed with the Mann Kendall trend test, followed by a linear mixed effects model that linked time and severity class to spectral change. ISODATA clustering was conducted to determine pre-fire and post-fire classes, with a stability matrix and change matrix tracking the fate of each pre-fire class with post-fire classification. LANDFIRE EVT maps were assessed to test their sensitivity to short term ecosystem change. Severity mapping showed contrasting fire behavior. Snowstorm burned chiefly at low severity and covered sixty nine percent of the area, whereas South Sugar Loaf contained similar proportions of high and moderate high severity at thirty-two and thirty three percent respectively. NDVI rose at both sites, confirming recovery. In Snowstorm the increase was uniform across severity classes, but in South Sugar Loaf low severity pixels gained more greenness than high severity ones, indicating that high severity had an impact on vegetation regrowth. MSI declined over time at both sites, indicating moisture recovery, with the largest decline in moderate high severity zones at South Sugar Loaf, indicating the role of burn severity, MCARI2 a chlorophyll proxy, climbed steadily and was again most responsive in the lower severity classes of South Sugar Loaf as compared to high severity, whereas there was no effect of severity in Snowstorm fire. Land surface temperature declined at Snowstorm fire area and showed localized reductions in low severity areas at South Sugar Loaf. The Mann-Kendall trend test was non-significant for fire areas but showed localized positive trends. Linear Mixed Effects model and Mann-Kendall test revealed time since fire to be the primary driver of recovery, while severity modulated local trajectories. ISODATA distinguished five pre-fire and seven post-fire classes at South Sugar Loaf and five pre-fire and post-fire classes at snowstorm. South Sugar Loaf underwent pronounced compositional change: its dominant shrubland class retained just one third of its original area, shifting largely to herbaceous and sparse vegetation categories. Conifers in South Sugarloaf fire lost most of it area to sparse vegetation in post-fire. Snowstorm exhibited greater stability for shrubs species, with more than half of the Herbs Shrubs Mix-2 class persisting. Across both fires new post fire clusters displayed lower near infrared and higher short wave infrared reflectance, signatures typical of ash and bare substrate. LANDFIRE EVT maps failed to register these changes, remaining static in both South Sugar Loaf and Snowstorm. Combining time series spectral metrics with unsupervised classification captured both gradual recovery and abrupt compositional shifts, offering a comprehensive view of postfire dynamics. The persistence of outdated classes in LANDFIRE EVT underscores the need for more agile vegetation mapping frameworks that can accommodate rapid ecological change in fire prone landscapes
