Online Experiential Learning in Career and Technical Education

    No full text
This scoping review investigates the integration of OEL into Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs. Using Arksey and O’Malley’s five-step scoping review framework, articles were identified through ERIC and Google Scholar and managed in Zotero. MAXQDA was used for coding, revealing thematic clusters related to modalities (synchronous, asynchronous, hybrid), technologies (LMS, AR/VR, simulation tools), and learner characteristics (nontraditional students, CTE-specific learning styles). The review highlights the conceptual anchors of Kolb’s Experiential Learning Theory, Carver et al.’s Experiential E-Learning Model, and Baasanjav’s online experiential design. Findings reveal that while OEL in CTE remains underexplored, it offers potential to increase accessibility, inclusivity, and workforce alignment. Implications suggest the need for standardized definitions, expanded instructor training, and targeted empirical studies to assess outcomes. This review contributes to emerging scholarship at the intersection of experiential and online learning in CTE

An Investigation of the Characteristics and Uses of School Farms in California FFA’s Superior Region

    No full text
This study investigates the characteristics and uses of school farms within Northern California, focusing on their role in school-based agricultural education (SBAE). The research aims to determine the structural and operational attributes of these facilities and to identify their primary uses as experiential learning tools. Utilizing a descriptive survey design, data were collected from 74 agricultural educators. Findings reveal that school farms, averaging 21.27 acres, are predominantly managed by agriculture teachers and are primarily used for housing market animals, supporting Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) projects. The study highlights the need for diversified school farm facilities to enhance experiential learning across all components of the SBAE model. Recommendations include targeted training for teachers, strategic facility planning through community partnerships, and innovative management approaches to optimize the educational potential of school farms

How Casino Match Play Promotions Can Hook Gamblers (and Non-Gamblers)

    No full text
Casino operators frequently use promotional gambling vouchers, free play and match play. In the case of free play, customers are offered gambling credits that function much like real money and patrons are able to quickly turn their promotional play into cash without risking their own money. Match play, however, can only be employed at table games and their use necessitates gamblers to wager their own funds. We conduct a thorough analysis of how match play can affect gamblers’ individual behavior. First, we assess the value of match play promotions, which we argue is ambiguous. Then, using behavioral economics concepts, we consider how match play promotions affect the risk appetite of casino patrons. While our analyses suggest that profit seeking casino operators are wise to prioritize match play promotions, we provide evidence that match play offers could be used to target and exploit individuals suffering from a gambling-related disorder. As such, their usage as marketing tools may not align with responsible gambling initiatives

Effects of Fit Between Promotional Message and Regulatory Focus on Consumers’ Sports Betting Behavior: The Moderating Role of Consumers’ Familiarity

    No full text
The sports gambling industry is an extremely competitive market. To attract more consumers, sports gambling platforms are primarily employing one of two customer acquisition strategies, namely ‘risk-free bet’ or ‘bonus money’ welcome offers. This research is built on regulatory fit theory to investigate the effectiveness of these two welcome offer strategies on consumers’ intentions to act on the offer. We further test the moderating effect of customers’ familiarity with online sports betting on their decision making. Findings of two experimental design studies demonstrate that the presence of regulatory fit between regulatory focus and promotional offers (i.e., message framing) positively affected the likelihood that consumers would exploit both promotional offers. In addition, for individuals with low familiarity with a product category, achieving a fit between their regulatory focus and the message framing positively moderated their likelihood of exploiting promotional offers

The Present and Future of Robotic Surgery in Breast Cancer and Breast Reconstruction

    No full text
Background: Breast cancer is the second most common cancer in women with an improving mortality rate and a growing need for reconstruction following oncologic resection. Advancements in robotic surgery and minimally invasive techniques have offered refinement to traditional open techniques of flap harvest for reconstruction, particularly regarding improved donor site morbidity. Methods: The literature review was based on a PubMed database search using the keyword “Robotic breast reconstruction” in conjunction with the Boolean operators “Flap”, “Latissimus”, and “DIEP” to specify the search. In total, 106 results were generated, which were then manually reviewed and condensed for a comprehensive stance on the current status, technique, variations, and outcomes for robotic breast reconstruction. Results: Robotic technique has been described for the latissimus dorsi (LD) and deep inferior epigastric perforator (DIEP) flaps for breast reconstruction. For LD, robotic flap harvest reduces donor site morbidity, incisional length, and hospital length of stay, with similar complication rates for seroma/hematoma/infection, and longer operative times. Robotic LD procedures have been described in conjunction with single-site nipple-sparing mastectomy and flap elevation leading to a full minimally invasive resection and reconstruction from one lateral incision. Robotic DIEP harvest offers a considerably smaller fascial incision/rectus muscle dissection and has a comparable complication rate to traditional techniques with shorter hospital length of stay, and improved pain, at the expense of longer operating times. Data on hernia/bulge reduction from robotic techniques is limited and not yet available. Conclusions: Robotic breast reconstruction offers great potential for improving breast reconstruction in terms of donor site morbidity, length of incision, hospital length of stay at the cost of longer operating times, and increased technical skill/specialization, but it has yet to be proven on a large scale with long-term outcome data. Multi-center, prospective clinical data and trials are needed to help elucidate the potential for equivalence and superiority of the minimally invasive approach compared to standard open techniques, but the future is promising for robotic surgery in breast cancer and breast reconstruction

The Demise of Fossil Cycad National Monument as a Consequence of Paleontological Resource Mismanagement

    No full text
Located in the Black Hills of South Dakota (Figure 1), Fossil Cycad National Monument boasted well-preserved specimens of cycadeoid fossils from the Cretaceous and concentrations of these fossil plants were greatest at the site’s location (Santucci and Hughes, 1998). I studied historical records to estimate the number of fossils removed by paleontologists at the site between 1890-1957.https://oasis.library.unlv.edu/durep_posters/1267/thumbnail.jp
