    Indigenous music education pedagogies and students soft skills acquisition in selected secondary schools in Arua city, Uganda

    xiv, 199 p. : col.Through this study, I sought to explore the use of indigenous music education pedagogies for students’ soft skills acquisition in secondary schools in Arua City. Phenomenological design was used to understand the lived experiences of the participants. Autoethnography enabled me to draw on my own experience as a music teacher to understand if and how indigenous music education pedagogies could be used to nurture students’ soft skill in a classroom setting. Data was collected using Focus Group Discussions (FGDs), interviews and observations. To ensure a clear presentation of the study's findings, content and narrative analysis was employed for construing the qualitative data. The collected data was then organized into thematic patterns and interpreted allowing for a comprehensive understanding of the information. The analysis of data revealed that pedagogical approaches currently employed in contemporary educational settings, such as storytelling, learning by doing, and guided participation, have equivalent versions in Lugbara indigenous practices. For example, storytelling in Lugbara language is referred to as a’diko daza or o’duko ‘daza. The concept of learning by doing is expressed as e’yo onizu ‘yetaa si, and guided participation is known as e’yo onizu azakoma ba azi vu ri si. These findings highlight the deep-rooted educational practices within the Lugbara culture that parallel modern pedagogical approaches, emphasizing the continuity of indigenous knowledge systems in contemporary education. The second objective sought to examine whether Indigenous music education pedagogies could cultivate essential soft skills such as communication, collaboration, creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving among secondary school music students in Arua City. However, Indigenous music education pedagogies not only developed these essential soft skills but also ignited an extraordinary growth in leadership, self-confidence, empathy, self-directed learning and resilience. This research fills a critical gap in existing literature by illustrating how Indigenous music education pedagogies can complement contemporary educational practices, particularly in fostering not only academic skills but also essential soft skills to prepare students for the complexities of a rapidly evolving world. The study calls for professional development programs that emphasize culturally responsive pedagogies to enhance teaching practices. Future research could investigate how these pedagogies influence different educational settings providing deeper insights into their broader applicability

    Factors affecting domestic tourism in Uganda : insights from the Uganda national household survey 2019/2020

    xii, 71 p.This study investigates the effects of individual, socioeconomic and technological factors on domestic tourism in Uganda. The aim of the study was to fill the gap on domestic tourism literature and provide information on key variables that affect domestic tourism in Uganda. The study estimated a logit model to establish and quantify the effect of individual characteristics, socio economic factors and technological factors on domestic tourism participation in Uganda. The source of data for this study was the Uganda National Household survey 2019/20. Results of the study showed that education level, household size, employment status, access to internet, access to mobile phones, and disability status positively and significantly affected participation in domestic tourism. Further, residence in urban area negatively and significantly affected participation in domestic tourism. As a key recommendation based on this study findings, Government should continue to invest in education for all which will in turn enhance appreciation for domestic tourism. The Government should also consider incorporation of tourism education in the National curriculum. Further, the Government should invest more in Information Communication and Technology (ICT) infrastructure as this would enhance participation in domestic tourism

    Assessment of community-based ecotourism as a conservation strategy for areas around Queen Elizabeth national park in Kasese district, western Uganda

    xiii, 82p.Queen Elizabeth National Park’s limited range of community-based ecotourism activities and services, along with weak community engagement and poor attitudes, constrains the full potential of ecotourism as a sustainable development model. This study assessed ecotourism activities, community involvement, and the socioeconomic and environmental benefits in Lake Katwe and Muhokya sub-counties, Kasese District. Data were collected from 333 household representatives and 21 key informants, including tourism officials, guides, rangers, tourists, and local leaders. Structured questionnaires and interviews were used, with multiple response analysis and Pearson’s chi-square test to examine the prevalence of ecotourism activities and community involvement differences. Findings revealed key ecotourism activities, such as cultural experiences, community-managed trails, and local food tours, while dominant services included community conservation projects (70.3%), community lodges (57.4%), and community-managed tours (54.7%). Community involvement was highest in revenue sharing (83.2%) and conflict resolution (69.4%), with strong participation in meetings, cultural preservation, and environmental education. Although ecotourism fosters livelihood diversification, skills development, and conservation incentives, limited activity variety and community engagement hinder its full impact. Strengthening conservation practices, enhancing community participation, and promoting long-term planning are recommended to maximize ecotourism’s benefits for conservation and local development

    Integration of water and sanitation facilities programs for menstruation management: a focus on university planning and budgeting processes at Kyambogo University, Uganda

    This study investigated the integration of water and sanitation facilities' programs for menstruation management with a focus on university planning and budgeting processes at Kyambogo University. The study employed qualitative methods of data collection and analysis from students and members of the university's top management. Findings revealed that there is limited engagement of female and male students in the budgeting and planning of water and sanitation facilities for menstruation management by the estates department; more so, the generic budget does not adequately cover all the requirements for menstruation management by female students, and female students perceive water and sanitation facilities for menstruation management as generally available but inaccessible and unacceptable in various ways. Thus, the study generates knowledge about the status of water and sanitation facilities for menstruation management to enable female students to participate in academic activities in higher education institutions by recommending that the Directorate of Planning and Development at Kyambogo University should promote a participatory and gender-equity inclusive plan and budget that ensures that water and sanitation facilities for menstruation management become an integral aspect in planning and budgeting processes of the estates department. The university should equitably improve the current status of water and sanitation facilities for menstruation management by providing specific water in toilet rooms including changing rooms, replacement of broken doors to provide privacy, and other required facilities to enhance effective menstruation management

    Perspectives from the local community on strategies for community transformation in Uganda’s public universities

    Several Universities in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) rarely have a clearly defined strategy for transforming communities. This is partly because some are still built on colonial models, which place a strong focus on theory, rote learning, and memorisation, where learners duplicate the content during examinations with little or no impact on the community. As a result, the surrounding communities continue to grapple with high levels of poverty, illiteracy, poor housing, disease, and poorquality health and hygiene. This study explores the strategies Gulu University is using to transform the post-conflict community of Gulu City, northern Uganda. A cross-sectional research design was used involving 390 households. Selfadministered questionnaires were employed to collect data on community perceptions of the operationalisation of the different strategies employed by Gulu University to transform the community. Descriptive statistics was used to determine the most outstanding strategies and their associated variables, while chisquare test was performed to assess the relationship between community perception of the existence of Gulu University and the strategies of community transformation. Findings revealed that, first, Gulu University’s strategy of knowledge application has been perceived by the surrounding community to have worked well by increasing employment opportunities, providing young people with opportunities for meaningful livelihood activities, reducing crime, and fostering enterprise development in the surrounding community. Second, the strategy of partnerships and community projects has paid off by providing scholarships to help community members further their education. However, there is still more to be done in terms of knowledge generation strategy through skill training, knowledge transmission strategy through technology transfer, primary health care, better farming engagements, and innovative business services, as well as partnerships and community projects strategy via enterprise development. Furthermore, findings indicated that there was a significant association between community perceptions of transformation and the existence of Gulu University. The findings highlight potential areas of focus for Gulu University and other Ugandan universities for formulating policies that higher institutions of learning can employ to transform communities. Besides, future research should explore the dimensions of community transformation that influence the role of higher institutions of learning in transforming communities

    Exact solutions for the Cahn–Hilliard equation in terms of Weierstrass‑elliptic and Jacobi‑elliptic functions

    Despite the historical position of the F‑expansion method as a method for acquiring exact solutions to nonlinear partial differential equations (PDEs), this study highlights its superiority over alternative auxiliary equation methods. The efficacy of this method is demonstrated through its application to solve the convective–diffusive Cahn–Hilliard (cdCH) equation, describing the dynamic of the separation phase for ternary iron alloys (Fe–Cr–Mo) and (Fe–X–Cu). Significantly, this research introduces an extensive collection of exact solutions by the auxiliary equation, comprising fifty‑ two distinct types. Six of these are associated with Weierstrass‑elliptic function solutions, while the remaining solutions are expressed in Jacobi‑elliptic functions. I think it is important to emphasize that, exercising caution regarding the statement of the term ’new,’ the solutions presented in this context are not entirely unprecedented. The paper examines numerous examples to substantiate this perspective. Furthermore, the study broadens its scope to include soliton‑like and trigonometric‑ function solutions as special cases. This underscores that the antecedently obtained outcomes through the recently specific cases encompassed within the more comprehensive scope of the present findings

The researcher adopted the following specific objectives: To examine what ICT equipment were used when teaching learners with HI in Nancy comprehensive school for the Deaf; To establish teachers’ knowledge in exploring ICT equipment in teaching learners with HI in Nancy Comprehensive school for the deaf; To examine the benefit of using ICT in teaching learners with HI in Nancy comprehensive school for the Deaf; To identify challenges faced by teachers of Nancy Comprehensive school for the Deaf in using ICT in the process of teaching learners with HI. To achieve the objectives, the researcher adopted a qualitative research approach to describe and explain participant’s narratives in their natural setting, which enabled the researcher to understand the true picture of the participants as they speak words. The findings revealed that there were some few ICT gadgets in the school. Teachers and leaners also had some little knowledge of ICT and knew about the various forms of equipment used in teaching leaners with HI. In addition, the study found out that ICT has simplified the teaching and retention capability of learners with HI and performance improved. Several challenges such as gadgets being too expensive, power fluctuation, some teachers not able to use the gadget as well as internet bundles being too expensive. Therefore, the study recommends that government strengthen the existing policies that will facilitate the easy teaching of leaners with HI using ICT. For example, not taxing internet bundles to schools that teach HI learners. Providing them with new gadgets, software and training them how to use them

    Sorption mechanisms and enhancement of selected organochlorine pollutants in water on zeolites

    Tis study investigates the adsorption capacities of selected organochlorines on zeolites, focusing on hexachlorobenzene (HCB), hexachlorotetradecane (HCTD), hexachlorodecane (HCD), hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH), heptachlorodecane (HPCD), octachlorodecane (OCD), dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT), and octachlorotetradecane (OCTD). Te structures of the organochlorines were optimized and their Frontier molecular orbitals were calculated. Te analysis of HOMO (highest occupied molecular orbital) and LUMO (lowest unoccupied molecular orbital) energies provided insights into the molecules’ electron-donating and -accepting capabilities. Te present research identifed the universal force feld as suitable for the investigation and used it to evaluate the adsorption capacities of the pollutants on various zeolites. It was found that CLO (a cubic microporous gallophosphate) demonstrated the highest adsorption capacity for HCB among 245 zeolites, with a loading capacity of 65.84 wt%. In terms of molecules adsorbed per cell, CLO remained the highest with 120 molecules per cell for HCB, 113 molecules per cell for HCH, 43 molecules per cell for DDT, 21 molecules per cell for HCTD, 19 molecules per cell for OCTD, 47 molecules per cell for HCD, 30 molecules per cell for HPCD, and 22 molecules per cell for OCD. Te analysis revealed correlations between the structural parameters of zeolites (mass, density, HVF, APV, VSA, GSA, DPS, and Di) and their adsorption capacities. Te investigation delved into cluster models to understand the interaction of organochlorines with the zeolite framework. Te study explored the impact of doping CLO zeolite with diferent atoms (Al, Si, and Na) on adsorption capacity. Te results showed that doping with aluminum improved both loading capacity and adsorption energy and dissociate the chlorinated compounds during adsorption. Quantum chemical calculations show that hydrogen-based bonding of the organochlorides on the CLO is thermodynamically favorable compared to dissociative adsorption. In addition, oxygen atoms in the zeolites provide active adsorption sites. In the present work, laboratory adsorption experiments were performed, treating zeolites with heat at 400 °C. Surprisingly, untreated zeolites outperformed treated ones, adsorbing up to 91% of HCB, while treated zeolites reached saturation after the third run. Te study attributed the better performance of untreated zeolites to the presence of interstitial water and hydrogen atoms, which are critical for electrostatic interactions with organic compounds. In general, this research provides a comprehensive analysis of the adsorption capacities of organochlorines on zeolites, combining computational simulations and laboratory experiments. Tis work’s distinctive quality is its methodology that combines molecular simulations, experimental verifcation, doping, and interstitial water efects. Te fndings emphasize the importance of zeolite (a high-porosity nanostructured material) structure, composition, and treatment methods in determining their efectiveness as adsorbents for environmental pollutants

    Efficacy of the non-digital Ugandan banknote identifier

    xi, 66p. : col.This study investigated the efficacy of the non-digital Ugandan Banknote identifier. The research aimed to evaluate the accuracy, user-friendliness, and necessary modifications of this tool to facilitate independent financial transactions for people with blindness. Despite the innovation of the non-digital Banknote identifier, it’s mass production, circulation, and usage have not been fully realized, thereby prompting this study. An experimental research design was employed, involving an experimental group using the identifier and a control group without it. This setup enabled a comparative analysis of the efficacy of the identifier. Data collection combined quantitative and qualitative methodologies through triangulation, incorporating in-depth interviews and statistical analysis. Findings revealed that 88.9% of respondents affirmed the accuracy of the non-digital identifier, though 11.1% preferred traditional methods due to doubts about its reliability. Before the introduction of the identifier, persons with blindness relied on assistance from others or tactile methods, often leading to inaccuracies and potential exploitation. The identifier has significantly enhanced the accuracy and independence of persons with blindness in financial transactions. Regarding user-friendliness, 88.8% of respondents adapted to the device within a week. However, challenges such as difficulty inserting old or weak Banknotes and the inability to detect counterfeit notes were reported. Despite these issues, the majority of respondents found the device significantly useful for daily transactions. Respondents suggested several modifications to improve the usability of the device, including using durable materials such as wood or metal, increasing the size, adding tactile lines, and incorporating a talking feature to announce denominations. These recommendations align with previous findings emphasizing the importance of tactile features on currency for persons with blindness. The study concludes that while the non-digital Banknote identifier is an effective tool for persons who are blind, there is a need for further improvements and increased awareness to promote its adoption. Enhancing the durability of the device, incorporating additional tactile features, and exploring digital solutions could further facilitate financial independence and security for persons who are blind in Uganda

    Kibiro Indigenous Salt Making Technology and Uganda’s Economic War, 1972-1979

(1-18) ;This paper examines the continuities and changes that characterised traditional salt-making technology at Kibiro during the 1972 economic war in Uganda and the influence of these technologies on the volume, quality, and benefits of mined salt. While Kibiro’s salt-making was not new in historical discourse, attention had largely been on its archaeology rather than its history. Using a historical qualitative approach, data was collected through oral interviews through purposeful snowballing, documentary review, and observations. The data were analysed using documentary analysis and narrative techniques. Results show the dynamics in the traditional salt making technology that provided a basis for appreciating how national changes can lead to unintended changes and benefits to the local communities without necessarily changing the production technology. The traditional salt-making technology exclusively done by women reveals the power of a woman salt miner to survive and support her household in an agriculturally barren geographical setting with trivial support from men due to cultural beliefs and practices
