Participation of youths in indigenous music and dance performances against modern music practices in selected villages of Iganga district, in Busoga
xv, 127 p. : col.The study examined the “Participation of Youths in Indigenous Music and Dance Performances against Modern Music Practices in Busoga Sub-Region, Iganga District”. The objectives sought to find out: Assess performance of indigenous music and dance and when it is done by the youths in selected villages of Iganga in Busoga sub region. The determinants for the preferred music and dance form of the youth and Implications of the preferred music and dance practices of the youths on their musical experiences. A qualitative research approach was used, with a case study design that led data gathering through interviews, focus group discussions, and observation. Nakalama and Nawanhyingi sub counties in Iganga district were purposely selected areas for the study where respondents were selected randomly, and also on snowball information. The study revealed that Tamenhaibuga and nalufuka music and dance practices were rarely exhibited by the youths through special specific functions and parties which were always organized by specific people put in charge. The study also found out that modern music and dance forms are much preferred and performed than the Busoga ethnic or indigenous music and dance by youths in the village settings. Furthermore, youth preference of modern music and dance forms is making them gradually lose knowledge, skills and names of indigenous music and dance forms, which may eventually lead to their extinction in the future generations. The study recommends that the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development boost its efforts to establish district cultural centers for the practice, promotion, and preservation of indigenous music and dance traditions for future generations. This should be handled by the district's cultural officers
Management agility, complexity adaptability and business resilience among hotels in Kampala metropolitan
xii, 86 p.This study focused on management agility, complexity adaptability, and business resilience among hotels in Kampala Metropolitan. The study was anchored on four objectives, which included: to examine the relationship between management agility and business resilience; the relationship between management agility and complexity adaptability; the relationship between complexity adaptability and business resilience; and to assess the mediating role of complexity adaptability on the relationship between management agility and business resilience. The study utilised a cross-sectional survey research design and a quantitative research approach. A sample size of 127 hotels was considered for the study, as determined by Krejcie and Morgan (1970). 109 hotels successfully participated in the study, showing a response rate of 85.8 percent. Two respondents from each sampled hotel were selected using the purposive sampling technique, while a simple random technique was used when selecting the hotels to consider in the study. Data was collected using a closed-ended questionnaire, and it was analysed using SPSS Ver.23. The study findings revealed that management agility had a significant and positive relationship with business resilience (r =.656**, p < 0.01). Complexity adaptability was also significantly and positively related to business resilience (.665**, p < 0.01). Regression results revealed that management agility and complexity adaptability were positively and significantly related (r =.737**, p < 0.01). Linear regression results revealed that management agility influences business resilience (B =.679, p =.000 <0.05), complexity adaptability positively predicted business resilience (B =.703, p =.000 <0.05), and management agility predicted complexity adaptability (B =.781, p =.000 <0.05). Multiple regression analysis revealed that demographic characteristics positively predicted business resilience with 29.2 percent, while a combination of demographic characteristics, management agility, and complexity adaptability positively and significantly predicted business resilience with 64.0 percent and complexity adaptability was the main predictor of business resilience in hotels in Kampala Metropolitan. The study recommends that the Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife, and Antiquities should collaborate with stakeholders in the hospitality industry to develop training programmes aimed at enhancing the skills and capabilities of hotel staff in areas such as market trend analysis, risk management, team empowerment, and continuous learning. The Ministry of Finance should offer incentives, like tax holidays, to hotels that invest in research and development initiatives. Lastly, hotel management needs to invest in continuous learning and development programmes to empower their teams with the knowledge and skills needed to navigate complex environments effectively
Couple-stress nanofluid flow comprised of titanium alloy subject to Hall current and Joule heating effects: Numerical investigation
Nanofluid flowoverarotating disk has several applications in engineering and industrial sectors, such as in cooling systems, heat exchangers, aerospace systems, and renewable energy systems. In the current analysis, the couple stress nanofluid flow over a rotating disk is reported. The nanofluid consists of ethylene glycol and titanium aluminum vanadium (Ti6Al4V) nanoparticles (NPs). The unique properties of Ti6Al4V-NPs, such as biocompatibility, high strength, high boiling point (1604–1660○C), and high corrosion resistance, make them more suitable for automobile industries. For the heat and mass transfer, the Cattaneo–Christov concept is introduced. In addition, the fluid flow is subjected to magnetic field, Hall current, thermal radiation, and Joule heating. The modeled equations are restructured into the dimensionless system of ordinary differential equations (ODEs) by using the similarity approach. The system of ODEs is further numerically solved through a MATLABpackagebased on the finite difference method (BVP4c). The results are presented in figures. It has been observed that the energy and curves of the nanofluid decline with the influence of thermal and solutal time relaxation parameters, respectively
Examining factors affecting effective force account implementation in Uganda district local governments
xiv, 122 p.This study examined the implementation of the force account mechanism (FAM) in ten Uganda District Local Governments (UDLGs). The study was instigated by a policy shift in June 2012, where the government transitioned from using contractors to FAM to achieve SDG 9 on building resilient infrastructure. The study objectives were; to examine the current practices of force account implementation in UDLGs, to determine the impact of current practices in implementation of Force Account in UDLGs, to examine the challenges of current practices in implementation of force account in UDLGs and to develop an effective force account implementation tool for construction projects in UDLGs. The descriptive research design with quantitative and qualitative research methods was employed. The study focused on the ten lowest-performing road fund-funded districts in Uganda, selected based on performance constraints and data availability. Data was collected from 57 participants who play various roles within these districts. Questionnaire data was analyzed with SPSS version 20 and content analysis for interviews for this study. The findings of the study unveiled strong support for the utilization of force account methods (FAM) in emergency work, particularly supported with force account practices of preparation expenditure and implementation schedule, procurement and annual work plan had high relative importance index where risk of work interruptions was effectively managed by the procuring entity or public authority. The budget, work supervision, and adherence to supervisor instructions attracted significant support. Challenges emerged were limited resource availability, incompetent personnel, suitability of equipment, and additional work during project implementation. Nonetheless, respondents expressed adherence to regulations, effective monitoring and supervision of project. Correlation results indicated that current force account practices were significant. Yet, regression results indicated that preparation of expenditure schedule (βeta = 0.518), implementation schedule (βeta = 0.489), procurement annual plan (βeta = 0.509) have significant effect on implementation of force account mechanism, unlike annual work plan which was insignificant. Compliance to regulatory framework, monitoring and supervision supported with increased budget and competent personnel enhanced implementation of force account mechanism (FAM). It was concluded that preparation of expenditure, implementation schedule and procurement annual plan supported by regulatory policy, budget and competent personnel enhanced implementation of FAM as displayed by the research established framework. The study recommended that preparation, approval, verification of expenditure and implementation schedule as well as annual procurement plan aligned with the budget supported with availability of qualified personnel, monitoring and evaluation, compliance to regulations enhanced project completion using force account implementation and it was upon this that a maintenance force account implementation frame work for the UDLGs was established
A framework to mitigate impacts of contract termination on construction projects in Uganda
xiii, 159 p.Construction projects in Uganda are faced with a challenge of resorting to termination of contract as a remedy for contract breach by either party to contract. The study aimed developing a frame work to mitigate impacts of construction contract termination on projects. Fifty-eight causes and twenty impacts of construction contract termination were identified through detailed literature review, questionnaire surveys and interviews administered to all key stakeholder categories in the industry who included: project beneficiaries, clients, contractors and consultants. The study categorized the causes of contract termination into five: contractor-related; client-related; financial and business environment-related; project-related; and, political-related causes. Thereafter, the impacts of contract termination on stake holder were analyzed using relative importance index (RII). The computed RII for each of the causes and impacts was used to rank them. Findings from the study revealed that contractor- related causes with RII=0.760 ranked the most critical among the five categories. The most significant causes of contract termination were revealed to be abandonment of work, client’s bankruptcy, delays in completion of works, contractor bankruptcy or insolvency, and, lack of resources. The most significant impacts of contract termination were identified as loss of income to the contractor, loss of reputation, delays in project completion, abandonment of project, cost overruns. The study concluded that contract termination is inevitable in the construction industry but can be prevented when the causes are properly identified, analyzed and managed during the project life cycle. A framework to mitigate contract termination in the construction industry was developed as a solution otherwise the adverse effects would continue occurring. The study recommended proper planning and provision of affordable credit facilities as mitigation measures
Effect of Land Use Activities on Water Quality and Vegetation Cover Change in Nsooba - Lubigi Wetland System, Kampala City

(1-16) ;An assessment of the effect of land use activities on water quality and vegetation cover change in Nsooba - Lubingi Wetland System in Kampala city was conducted between July and October 2020. In order to achieve the set objectives, twelve locations were selected from the Nsooba - Lubingi Catchment. The physico-chemical characteristics of water along the catchment area were determined by standard analytical methods. The average values for Total Dissolved Solids across all the land-use types of wetland, built up areas and agriculture were lower than the National Standard (750 mg/l). A similar pattern of the land-use was observed for the parameters Total phosphorous, Biological oxygen demand, Chemical oxygen demand, Total suspended solids and Total organic carbon, where the observed average values were all below the National Standards of 10 mg/l, 50mg/l, 70mg/l, 50mg/l and 50mg/l, respectively. The Total Nitrogen average value for built-up areas (11.27 mg/l) was higher than the national standard of 10 mg/l while the remaining land use types of wetland (8.05mg/l) and agriculture (5.96mg/l) were below that of the
recommended standard. GIS and Remote sensing techniques were used to analyze highresolution satellite imagery captured during 1998, 2008 and 2018. Wetland coverage declined by approximately 5 hectares (47.2% to 14.58%) from 1998 to 2018. Although most of the measured parameters were below the National standard specified by the Uganda National Environmental Management Authority apart from Total Nitrogen for built-up areas, there is need for close monitoring of the water quality in Nsooba - Lubingi catchment to ensure public health safety. The increased built-up environment in the Nsooba - Lubigi wetland affects ecosystems services of the wetland. The buffer zones for flood control and sewage treatment have been turned into built-up environment. The results from this study suggest a need to protect the Nsooba - Lubingi catchment for its important ecosystems services of flood control and sewage treatment
Investigation of mechanical properties of concrete developed from a binder composite of sugar cane bagasse ash and Portland cement
xiv, 109 p. : ill. (some col.) ;Cement production has been growing over time. Statistics indicate more growth as the human population increases. However, cement production relies on natural resources such as limestone rocks. The mining of these minerals poses grave environmental hazards. Increased limestone mining and its use in cement production have led to, deforestation, soil and water contamination and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions mostly carbon dioxide (CO2). This has led to global warming and the rising of sea levels. The East Africa Community (EAC) countries have immense sugarcane cane bagasse ash (SCBA) which remains unexploited as a supplementary-cementitious material (SCM). This study delved into using EAC SCBA as a pozzolan. SCBA investigated was collected from Kenya's coastal area. Raw SCBA, processed SCBA, Portland cement (PC) and the developed concrete were characterised by various techniques to determine the surface morphology, chemical composition, structural properties and mineralogical composition. The raw SCBA was calcinated at 600 oC to get processed SCBA (SCBA-600). SCBA-600 was then used to design the concrete mix. PC was replaced from 0 to 30 % in steps of 10 %. The flexural and compressive strengths were determined in the hardened state after twenty-eight days of concrete curing. The compressive and flexural strength of the mix containing 20 % SCBA was higher than the control mix by 9.65 and 6.51 %, respectively. The microstructural properties of the developed concrete revealed dense particle distribution, indicating good micro/nanofiller effects of the interfacial transition zone. The processed SCBA was found to meet class N and F of natural pozzolan as per ASTM –C 618. The samples were analysed using XRD, SEM, EDX, and XRF techniques. The concrete design was done following IS 10262-2009 and IS 456. The casting and curing were done as per ASTM C-192 and lastly, the mechanical strengths were done as per ASTM C-39 and ASTM C78-00 standards specifications. These positive results from the experimental investigation, technically portray the Kenya coastal SCBA as a potential SCM
Utilisation of digital technologies in teaching students with blindness at a selected university in Dar es salaam city, Tanzania
xiii, 98 p. ;This study explored utilization of digital technologies in teaching Students with blindness at selected university in Dar es Salaam City, Tanzania. The study aimed to achieve three objectives, namely, to analyze the availability and adequacy of digital technologies for teaching students with blindness at selected university, to examine how the available digital technologies are used in teaching students with blindness at selected university and to investigate the perceptions of lecturers, technical staff and students on utilization of digital technologies in selected university. The study utilized the Technology Acceptance Model to explore utilization of digital technologies at selected university. The study adopted a qualitative approach; a case study design was used to obtain the relevant data. Criterion purposive sampling was employed. Two methods of data collection were used to collect data which are Interview and Observation. In an interview, a semi-structured interview guide was prepared to explore utilization of digital technologies and 12 participants were interviewed. While under observation, the observation checklist was prepared to investigate the availability and adequacy digital technologies and supportive infrastructures that enable utilization of digital technologies and the data were recorded. The data obtained were analyzed thematically following the research purpose, objectives and research questions. The study found that digital technologies at selected university were available but not enough to cater for the academic needs of each blind student in the university. Some of digital technologies were appropriate while some are not. Additionally, the study shows that utilization of digital technologies is limited due to lack of knowledge among users, unsupportive infrastructures, and a low number of digital technologies. Finally, the study reveals that there are lectures, technical staffs and students who perceive utilization of digital technologies positively where they believe its use saves time, enhances participation, and promotes equitable quality education to students with and without disabilities and those who perceive it negatively where they believe that using technology can lead to frustration and time wastage. The study concluded that the university has inadequate DTs to enhance the teaching and learning of students with blindness; hindrances emerged, leading to the underutilization of available digital technologies in teaching students with blindness, together with the negative perceptions among lecturers, technical staff and students with blindness. Lastly, the study recommended that the Ministry of Education Science and Technology, in collaboration with other stakeholders like Non-Government Organizations and associations works with people with disabilities, to ensure the availability and adequate number of digital technologies for blind university students. The regular awareness training and capacity building of technical staff to ensure full utilization of digital technologies in teaching students with blindness. Also, the study recommends an improvement of teacher education to provide knowledge on how to handle inclusive classes with the aid of technology and to improve the supportive infrastructure
Aerobic-exercise training effects on immunological markers in individuals on highly active antiretroviral therapy in Uganda
9 p. ;There is critical relevance in understanding the multidisciplinary management of HIV/AIDs among individuals obtaining health services in Uganda. The purpose of the study was therefore to assess the effects of aerobic exercise training on immunological markers as a clinical outcome of Human Immunodeficiency Virus positive clients attending a chronic HIV clinic at a General Military HospitalBombo. A pre-post experimental design was used to understand differences between the
experimental and control groups. Participants were Human Immunodeficiency Virus positive clients who had been on treatment that is, Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy for at least 12 months. They were randomly assigned to either a control group (Group 1): who did not participate in the aerobic exercise, or an experimental group (Group 2): where a 12-week moderate intensity aerobic exercise, for not less than 3 times a week, and for at least 45 minutes per session was administered. Both groups were assessed using a physical activity readiness questionnaire. Thereafter, assessment of the clinical outcomes that is, immunological measures using Clusters of differentiation 4 were assessed. While the experimental group participated in the exercise, the control group members were followed up during the 12 weeks to ensure that they remained in the study. After the 12 weeks post-test was done. The findings of this study revealed that aerobic exercises significantly increased Clusters of differentiation 4 count in both males and females by 29.7% on average (p<0.001). Aerobic exercise is therefore likely to increase quality of life, reduce mobility and mortality rates in Human Immunodeficiency Virus positive clients on highly active antiretroviral therapy
Assessing occupational safety and health hazards at workplaces in Uganda : a case of four engineering materials testing laboratories
xvi, 158 p.Workplaces in Uganda are mandated to satisfy the requirements of the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA), 2006 regarding the Occupational Safety and Health of workers. Despite of the above, many workplaces in Uganda including Engineering Materials Testing Laboratories have continued not to satisfy the above requirements. Although different strategies to manage OSH risks have been devised and several entities like Safety committees and Ministry of Gender Labour and Social development (MoGLSD) empowered by the act to ensure compliance of work places, OSH in engineering materials testing laboratories has remained a challenge; thereby exposing staff and visitors to the laboratories to serious OSH hazards including physical injuries and long-term health risks like cancer. It is these compliance gaps that this study is set to examine, using the case of Engineering Materials Laboratory (EML), Central Materials Laboratory (CML), Geotechnical Foundation Services Ltd (GFS) and Geotechnical Engineering and Technology Laboratory Ltd (GET). The study used both quantitative and qualitative research designs. Quantitative data collection was supported by the use of questionnaires with closed ended questions administered to 60 respondents and then qualitative data, by use of an interview guide.
The study findings indicate that for all laboratories, risks due to chemical hazards ranked highest, followed by risks due to accident hazards. Risks due to physical hazards ranked third for EML as opposed to risks due to ergonomics and psychosocial factors that ranked third for CML, GFS and GET. Risks due to ergonomics and psycho-social factors ranked lowest for EML as opposed to risks due to physical hazards factors that ranked lowest for CML, GFS and GET. Consequently, the assessment of the level of compliance to Uganda’s OSH regulatory framework indicated that GET, GFS, EML and CML were 88%, 83.4%, 79.7% and 76% compliant respectively, implying that there are still gaps in the implementation of OSHA, 2006. In conclusion, the study attributes these gaps to inadequate financial resources allocated for OSH operations and laxity in implementing OSH management strategies by the various key players among others
