Design and performance test of series underwater Savonius rotors with horizontal axis
The energy of river water flow or irrigation canals can be utilized by using a horizontal axis Savonius turbine, which converts low-speed river flow into electrical power with good design. The design of this turbine needs to pay attention to several parameters, namely, the deflector angle, the number of blades, the diameter and thickness of the blades, and the diameter and thickness of the end plates. However, the problem usually encountered is imperfect turbine construction due to the large drag force that occurs so that the power generated is low. Based on this background, it is proposed to manufacture and test the performance of a series Savonius underwater rotors with a horizontal axis. The research results found that the generator voltage without load was 25.6 V when the turbine only rotated at 47.2 rpm, whereas when under load, the average power produced was 8.5 watts with an average turbine speed of 31 rpm. The highest efficiency value on the rotor is 86.73%, with a torque value of 3.36 at a turbine speed of 29.9 rpm. This indicates that the tool can generate large torque at low speeds
Mapping of lamtoro field in supporting the co-firing of steam power plants program
The policy of renewable energy in Indonesia is expressed in the government regulation no. 79 in 2014 regarding the national energy policy. In the document, renewable energy is targeted to reach 23% in 2025, and a minimum of 31% in 2050. One of the developed renewable energies is biomass which is produced by lamtoro, a plant which has been employed as a mixture in coal at Anggrek steam power plant 2×25 MW Gorontalo. As much of 1% to 5% of lamtoro is added in 1,000 ton of coal per day. The research aims to create a thematic map of the distribution of lamtoro to meet the need of co-firing at Anggrek steam power plant. The result of research shows the total area of field which has been planted with lamtoro is 69,074 ha, scattered in 14 districts. Meanwhile the largest area is Kabila Bone district (22,070 ha), and the smallest area is East Bulango district (0.228 ha). The estimated potential of lamtoro in 14 districts of Bone Bolango regency is about 916,439.86 ton/ha/year
Reactive power control of solar photovoltaic inverters for grid code compliance support
The compensation of reactive power in smart inverters is one solution to address the issue of voltage violations in the distribution network due to the penetration of solar photovoltaic power generation. However, options for reactive power control are limited during variations in irradiation and daily load on the feeder. This study aims to investigate the performance difference between four reactive power control techniques including Q(V) control, Q(P) control, fixed Q-Var, and fixed power factor (PF) available in smart inverters to reduce voltage violations due to PV integration and comply with the grid-code. Three-phase balanced power flow was simulated in a medium voltage distribution network (MVDN) considering the reactive power control mode of the inverter under variations in solar radiation and daily load. The results showed that the Q(V) control was more effective in improving distribution feeder voltage than other techniques and showed its compliance with the grid-code. The limiting setting point for var injection or power factor limit should be proportional to the daily grid load profile
Transmission line fault analysis using actuating relays and Atmega 328P controller
Since transmission lines account for 80–86% of power system problems, protecting transmission lines is a critical concern. This research proposes a method to identify and categorize various short circuit defects on transmission lines. Various operational and fault circumstances on the transmission of high voltage lines, including L-L fault, single phase to earth fault, and double line fault, double line Three fault scenarios triple line fault, triple line to ground fault, and triple line are simulated using MATLAB software. These flaws damage the linked devices to the power grid. The main motto of this work is to analyze various kinds of faults and also to detect the type of the fault in transmission line. In order to simulate and evaluate the various faults, a 100 km transmission line model was created. A sim power system block library had a fault block, and the harmonic content of the various faults was studied using the FFT tool, the effect of faults was observed. Based on the analysis, a hardware model is designed to identify the faults in transmission line using actuating relays and Atmega 328P microcontroller and display the fault type and parameters like fault impedance, and distance at which fault occurred
Power supervision of an autonomous photovoltaic/wind turbine/battery system with MPPT using adaptative fuzzy logic controller
In this work a power supervision of an autonomous photovoltaic/wind turbine/batteries system is presented. Measurements of weather conditions during different has been made. Due to the instantaneous changing of solar irradiance, temperature and wind speeds, maximum power point tracking (MPPT) is integrated. Due to its ease of use, the perturb and observe (P&O) algorithm is the most preferred, but has a great disadvantage of oscillations at steady state. The adaptative fuzzy logic controller (AFLC) method is also widely used for its advantages of fast response with better performance than the classical FLC and P&O strategies. An accurate sizing methodology was applied in the proposed sizing approach to calculate the PV and wind turbine generators number. To manage the various powers, supervision method is simple, easy realization and not heavy computation. A simulation study under MATLAB/Simulink has been made. The different results are given and analyzed
A 3D model of three phase shunt reactors by using a finite element technique with coupling to global quantities
The finite element technique is used widely for researchers and manufacturers to design and simulate electrical systems in general and electrical machines such as shunt reactors (SRs) and transformers in particular. Many papers have recently applied several methods to analyze magnetic fields, copper losses and joule power losses in the shunt reactors (SRs). In this research, the finite element technique with coupling to global quantities is proposed to investigate the voltage and current distributions in the windings, and compute the distribution of magnetic field in the air gap and along the air core of the SR, as well as copper and core losses. The developed method is directly applied to the practical SR of 91 MVAr and a rated voltage of 500 kV. The finite element method (FEM)-simulated results are validated with experimental results to ensure accuracy and reliability. This facilitate designing the reactor
Bidirectional controller supported inductively coupled dual buck converter based DSTATCOM with passive filterfor PQ improvement
This research paper explains about the bidirectional controller (BC) supported inductively coupled dual buck converter (IC-DBC) based distributed static compensator (DSTATCOM) with passive filter (PF) for 3-ф 3-wire (3P3W) power distribution system (PDS). The most significant concern in the PDS is power quality (PQ) control. Hence, innovative approach is proposed by considering concept and benefits of BC, inductive coupled filtering transformer (IFCT), passive filter and dual buck converter. Equivalent circuit for IC-DBC based DSTATCOM is realized in view of impedance of transformer and direct coupled dual buck converter (DC-DBC) based DSTATCOM to disclose the filtering mechanism. The supremacy of the proposed DSTATCOM is introduced by comparing its simulation outcomes with DC-DBC based DSTATCOM and IC-DBC based DSTATCOM in terms of better harmonics curtailment, power factor advancement, load balancing & reduced DC link voltage compared to other approaches as per IEEE standard

The results show that the slow charging 86% and fast charging efficiency is more than 82%
Using machine learning prediction to design an optimized renewable energy system for a remote area in Italy
Due to the lack of fossil fuels, there is a significant demand to employ renewable energy systems (RES) worldwide. This paper proposes designing an optimized RES for a remote microgrid that relies solely on solar and wind sources. The proposed RES aims to provide reliable and efficient energy to the microgrid by using machine learning algorithms to forecast the power output of the solar and wind sources. This forecasting will help the system to anticipate and adjust to changes in the weather patterns that may affect the availability of solar and wind. In addition, the system advisor model (SAM) software is used to design the hybrid solar/wind system, considering factors such as the size of the microgrid and the available resources. The system comprises a 60-kW wind system of ten turbines and a 100-kW PV system spread out over the houses. The results show that random forest regression (RFR) models achieved a high level of accuracy in predicting solar power generation, as evidenced by their low mean squared error (MSE) and high R² values. Additionally, a proposed hybrid system can generate enough energy to meet the area's needs
An analysis of the prospects and efficiency of floating and overland photovoltaic systems
The world's increasing demand for energy coupled with dwindling natural resources has spurred the need for alternative and renewable energy sources. However, one of the biggest drawbacks of renewable energy is its intermittency. Currently, most of the world's electrical energy comes from thermal power and nuclear energy combined. Despite being heavily reliant on energy imports, Morocco has made progress in developing its solar energy capacity with an installed capacity of 760 MW, 200 MW of which comes from photovoltaics. One way for Morocco to further increase its renewable energy production is through floating solar power, which utilizes the water surface of dams and reservoirs. The challenge with this approach is to secure the floating solar panels to prevent them from being blown about by wind and other elements. Like onshore solar power, offshore solar power also utilizes maximum power point tracking (MPPT) technology to maximize energy production. To compare the efficiency of terrestrial and marine solar power systems, the design and simulation of a solar PV system with MPPT through a boost converter was carried out using MATLAB/Simulink models. The study also examined the impact of water flow characteristics on the output of solar energy from floating panels
