Filtering Method for Location Estimation of an Underwater Robot
This paper describes an application of extended Kalman filter(EKF) for localization of an underwater robot. For the application, linearized model of robot motion and sensor measurement are derived. Like usual EKF, the method is recursion of two main steps: the time update(or prediction) and measurement update. The measurement update uses exteroceptive sensors such as four acoustic beacons and a pressure sensor. The four beacons provide four range data from these beacons to the robot and pressure sensor does the depth data of the robot. One of the major contributions of the paper is suggestion of two measurement update approaches. The first approach corrects the predicted states using the measurement data individually. The second one corrects the predicted state using the measurement data collectively. The simulation analysis shows that EKF outperforms least squares or odometry based dead-reckoning in the precision and robustness of the estimation. Also, EKF with collective measurement update brings out better accuracy than the EKF with individual measurement update
A Novel Path Planning for Robots Based on Rapidly-Exploring Random Tree and Particle Swarm Optimizer Algorithm
A based on Rapidly-exploring Random Tree(RRT) and Particle Swarm Optimizer (PSO) for path planning of the robot is proposed.First the grid method is built to describe the working space of the mobile robot, then the Rapidly-exploring Random Tree algorithm is used to obtain the global navigation path, and the Particle Swarm Optimizer algorithm is adopted to get the better path.Computer experiment results demonstrate that this novel algorithm can plan an optimal path rapidly in a cluttered environment. The successful obstacle avoidance is achieved, and the model is robust and performs reliably
Different Control Algorithms for a Platoon of Autonomous Vehicles
This paper presents a concept of platoon movement of autonomous vehicles (smart cars). These vehicles have Adaptive or Advanced cruise control (ACC) system also called Intelligent cruise control (ICC) or Adaptive Intelligent cruise control (AICC) system. The vehicles are suitable to follow other vehicles on desired distance and to be organized in platoons. To perform a research on the control and stability of an AGV (Automated Guided Vehicles) string, we have developed a car-following model. To do this, first a single vehicle is modeled and since all cars in the platoon have the same dynamics, the single vehicle model is copied ten times to form model of platoon (string) with ten vehicles. To control this string, we have applied equal PID controllers to all vehicles, except the leading vehicle. These controllers try to keep the headway distance as constant as possible and the velocity error between subsequent vehicles - small. For control of vehicle with nonlinear dynamics combination of feedforward control and feedback control approach is used. Feedforward control is based on the inverse model of nominal dynamics of the vehicle, and feedback PID control is designed based on the linearized model of the vehicle. For simulation and analysis of vehicle and platoon of vehicles – we have developed Matlab/Simulink models. Simulation results, discussions and conclusions are given at the end of the paper
Dynamic Behavior of a SCARA Robot by using N-E Method for a Straight Line and Simulation of Motion by using Solidworks and Verification by Matlab/Simulink
SCARA (Selective Compliant Assembly Robot Arm) robot of serial architecture is widely used in assembly operations and operations "pick-place", it has been shown that use of robots improves the accuracy of assembly, and saves assembly time and cost as well. The most important condition for the choice of this kind of robot is the dynamic behavior for a given path, no closed solution for the dynamics of this important robot has been reported. This paper presents the study of the kinematics (forward and inverse) by using D-H notation and the dynamics of SCARA robot by using N-E methods. A computer code is developed for trajectory generation by using inverse kinematics, and calculates the variations of the torques of the links for a straight line (path rest to rest) between two positions for operation "pick-place". SCARA robot is constructed to achieve “pick-place» operation using SolidWorks software. And verification by Matlab/Simulink. The results of simulations were discussed. An agreement between the two softwares is certainly obtained herei
Optimizing Hexapod Robot Reconfiguration using Hexa-Quad Transformation
This paper presents a leg reconfigurable technique to optimize the hexapod robot reconfiguration flexiblity. A hexapod-to-quadruped (Hexa-Quad) transformation technique is proposed to optimize hexapod legs on certain situation that need some legs to be disabled as a leg to do other tasks and operations. This proposed method used the factor of center of body (CoB) stability in the support polygon and its body shape. The reinitialized leg’s shoulder method is proposed to ensure the support polygon is balanced and confirmed the CoM nearly or at the center. This method is modeled and simulated in a real-time based model of hexapod robot with 4-DOF/leg control architecture. The model is verified in numerical model and presented using separated 3D simulators
Self Assistive Technology for Disabled People – Voice Controlled Wheel Chair and Home Automation System
This paper describes the design of an innovative and low cost self-assistive technology that is used to facilitate the control of a wheelchair and home appliances by using advanced voice commands of the disabled people. This proposed system will provide an alternative to the physically challenged people with quadriplegics who is permanently unable to move their limbs (but who is able to speak and hear) and elderly people in controlling the motion of the wheelchair and home appliances using their voices to lead an independent, confident and enjoyable life. The performance of this microcontroller based and voice integrated design is evaluated in terms of accuracy and velocity in various environments. The results show that it could be part of an assistive technology for the disabled persons without any third person’s assistance
Reorganization of intruder Using Ad-Hoc Network And RFID
This system is to develop a centralized computer application that needs to identify moving person in a specific area using wireless network. In this paper, we develop a new indoor tracking algorithm using received signal strength. The RFID is able to detect the humans and provide information about the direction of the movement. The gathered information from the node is to be given to the base station for processing. . This application is able to detect and track person, and report direction of the intruder to a central base station. In this system we design nodes through which we are able to track the person. The human intruder is detected using Zigbee
Distributed Receding Horizon Coverage Control by Multiple Mobile Robots
This paper presents a distributed receding horizon coverage control algorithm to control a group of mobile robots having linear dynamics with the assumption that the robot dynamics are decoupled from each other. The objective of the coverage algorithm considered here is to maximize the detection of the occurrence of the events. First the authors introduce a centralized receding horizon coverage control and then they introduce a distributed version of it. To avoid the common disadvantages that are associated with the centralized approach, the problem is then decomposed into several RHCC problems, each associated with a particular robot, that are solved using distributed techniques. In order to solve each RHCC, each robot needs to know the trajectories of its neighbors during the optimization time interval. Since this information is not available, an algorithm is presented to estimate the trajectory of the neighboring robots. To minimize the estimation error, a compatibility constraint, which is also a key requirement in the closed-loop stability analysis, is considered. Moreover, the proof of the close-loop stability of this distributed version is provided and shows that the location of the robots will indeed converge to the centroids of a Voronoi partition. Simulation results validate the algorithm and the convergence of the robots to the centroidal Voronoi configuration

A mini-UAV VTOL Platform for Surveying Applications
In this paper we discuss implementation of a mini-Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) platform for surveying activities related to highway construction. Recent advances in sensor and communication technologies have allowed scaling sizes of unmanned aerial platforms, and explore them for tasks that are economical and safe over populated or inhabited areas. In highway construction the capability of mini-UAVs to survey in hostile and/or hardly accessible areas can greatly reduce human risks. The project focused on developing a cost effective, remotely controlled, fuel powered mini-UAV VTOL (helicopter) platform with certain payload capacity and configuration and demonstrated its use in surveying and monitoring activities required for highway planning and construction. With an on-board flight recorder global positioning system (GPS) device, memory storage card, telemetry, inertial navigation sensors, and a video camera the mini-UAV can record flying coordinates and relay live video images to a remote ground receiver and surveyor. After all necessary integration and flight tests were done the mini-UAV helicopter was tested to operate and relay video from the areas where construction was underway. The mini-UAV can provide a platform for a range of sensors and instruments that directly support the operational requirements of transportation sector
