An Empirical Survey on the Effect of Strategic Resources on Performance of Agribusiness Companies Listed at the Nairobi Securities Exchange in Kenya
Journal ArticleThe agribusiness sector in Kenya is a vital contributor to the economy, accounting for over 20% of the annual GDP. Despite its importance and substantial government support, the sector faces numerous challenges. A review of the literature reveals a gap in understanding the impact of strategic resources on the performance of agribusiness companies. To address this gap, the present study aimed to examine the effect of strategic resources on the performance of agribusiness companies listed on the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) in Kenya. The study utilized a mixed-method research design and was grounded in the Resource-Based View (RBV) theory and the Balanced Scorecard Model. The target population comprised all six agribusiness companies listed on the NSE, with 120 management staffmembers—including directors, departmentheads, and middle to supervisory-levelmanagers—participating as respondents.Quantitative data collected from closeended questions were analyzed using SPSS (Version 28.0), while qualitative data from open-ended questions were categorized into themes and broad categories. The strength of the model was assessed using the R² statistic, with the F-statistic computed at a 95% confidence level and hypothesis testing based on p-values at the 5% significance level. The findings revealed that strategic resources have a positive impact on the performance of agribusiness companies listed on the NSE. Based on these results, the study recommends that agribusiness firms enhance their strategic resources by investing in resources that are valuable, rare, inimitable, and nonsubstitutable
Frontiers of Legal Protection: Kenya’s Legal Framework and the Protection of Domestic Workers in Saudi Arabia
Journal ArticleIn a globalized world, prioritizing capitalism, democracy, and human rights, economic migration has become common trend for both skilled and unskilled workers. Kenya and Saudi Arabia have longstanding bilateral relations, resulting in increased migration of Kenyan domestic workers to Saudi Arabia. However, this has also led to rising human rights violations. This article assesses the efficacy of Kenya's legal regime in the provision ofthe security of domestic workers in Saudi Arabia. It explores the relationship between Kenya’s legal framework and its practical implementation in guaranteeing their security. In its methodology, it utilisesa qualitative approach, conducting interviews with returnee domestic workers, Kenyan domestic workers currently in Saudi Arabia, recruitment agency officials, and personnel from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Labour. The findings highlight significant gaps in Kenya's legal framework and its enforcement, which hinder the protection of domestic workers abroad. It concludes with recommendations to strengthen Kenya’s legal protections and improve the security of its migrant worker
Exploring the Spatio–Temporal Dynamics in Activator–Inhibitor Systems Through a Dual Approach of Analysis and Computation
ThesisReal–world mathematical models often manifest as systems of non-linear differential equations, which presents challenges in obtaining closed-form analytical solutions. In this paper, we study the diffusion-driven instability of an activator–inhibitor–type reaction–diffusion (RD) system modeling the GEF–Rho–Myosin signaling path-way linked to cellular contractility. The mathematical model we study is formulated from first principles using experimental observations. The model formulation is based on the biological and mathematical assumptions. The novelty is the incorporation of Myo9b as a GAP for RhoA, leading to a new mathematical model that
describes Rho activity dynamics linked to cell contraction dynamics. Assuming mass conservation of molecular species and adopting a quasi-steady state assumption based on biological observations, model reduction is undertaken and leads us to a system of two equations. We adopt a dual approach of mathematical analysis and
numerical computations to study the spatiotemporal dynamics of the system. First, in absence of diffusion, we use a combination of phase-plane analysis, numerical bifurcation and simulations to characterize the temporal dynamics of the model. In the absence of spatial variations, we identified two sets of parameters where the
model exhibit different transition dynamics. For some set of parameters, the model transitions from stable to oscillatory and back to stable, while for another set, the model dynamics transition from stable to bistable and back to stable dynamics. To study the effect of parameter variation on model solutions, we use partial
rank correlation coefficient (PRCC) to characterize the sensitivity of the model steady states with respect to parameters. Second, we extend the analysis of the model by studying conditions under which a uniform steady state becomes unstable in the presence of spatial variations, in a process known as Turing diffusion–driven
instability. By exploiting the necessary conditions for diffusion–driven instability and the sufficient conditions for pattern formation we carry out, numerically, parameter estimation through the use of mode isolation. To support theoretical and computational findings, we employ the pdepe solver in one-space dimension and the finite difference method in two–space dimension.Daystar Universit
Theatre as Witness: Exploring Climate Change Through Performance
Conference PaperThe skit focuses on the role of humans in dealing with climate change. It highlights how man, directly or indirectly, contributes to environmental destruction. The narrative unfolds with the circulation of a TikTok-originated rumor about a forced evacuation, initially dismissed by the villagers. Chaos ensues at dawn when a bulldozer and a large gang of youths arrive, compelling the community to leave under threat of violence. Displaced, the villagers settle near the forest in protest displacement and the environmental degradation caused by plans to clear trees for the construction of a heavy chemical industry. This sparks media attention. Ironically, the evacuation is masterminded by a wealthy local businessman, publicly known for advocating for environmental preservation internationally. Tensions escalate as the gang violently blocks access to the fenced forest during the protests until the local chief and the police intervene. A pivotal moment arises when a Gen-Z activist boldly comes out to present viral video evidence of the chief accepting a bribe from the businessman. The skit concludes with a powerful speech on climate change and a poignant poem, highlighting the implications of environmental and human rights.Daystar Universit
Whose Voice Counts? Inclusivity in Participatory Budgeting for Climate Change Adaptation in Makueni County
Conference PaperDevolution provides an opportunity for social, political and economic empowerment through distribution of power, resources and decision-making. Meaningful participation means not only participating in identification of priorities but also sharing of the development outcomes. There has been numerous studies on the impact of devolution and public participation on local economic development, however, there is need to study the nexus between participatory budgeting and climate change adaptation. The objective of this paper is therefore to study inclusivity in participatory budgeting and how it influences climate change adaptation measures. The study will be anchored on Deliberative Democracy Theory and key elements in the study will include assessing whose voice is prioritized or marginalized in the climate change adaptation decision making. It will also explore how decisions on climate change initiatives are made considering power dynamics. The study will apply qualitative approach, and purposive sampling will be applied supplemented by snowball sampling. Four rural wards will be purposively selected and four Focus Group Discussions targeting farmer group, youth group, persons with disabilities and water resource group (1 FGD per ward). Data collected through 3 - 4 key informant interviews amongst civil societies and government officials in sectors affected by climate change and citizens who have attended participatory budgeting forums. In conclusion, the study will address policy issues such as the threshold of public participation, the legitimacy of the process, mechanisms of removing the barriers for participation and the necessary institutional capacity to translate participatory budgeting outputs into climate change adaptation measures.Daystar Universit
From Habermas’ Bourgeois Public Sphere to Gerbaudo’s Online Crowds: A Foucauldian Discourse Analysis of Kenya’s #EngageThePresident on X Space
Journal articlePurpose: The main purpose of this paper is to examine the discourse of governance, bio-power and political accountability in Kenya. Applying the lens of Foucauldian discourse analysis, the study explores #EngageThePresident X Space. At this forum, President Ruto and Gen Z participants engaged in a discussion at the height of the 2024 anti-tax law protests in Kenya.
Methodology: Underpinned by public sphere theory, we first examine the construction of subjects' positions and power relations within the discourse. Second, we analyse discourses surrounding governance, political accountability and bio-power in Kenya. Third, we explore how language, institutions, and cultural norms influence the production of knowledge, categorisation of individuals, and construction of contextual truths.
Findings: The study found that Gen Z emerged in the discourse as a fragmented subject, ranging from patriotic and emotionally volatile to naïve and tech-savvy citizens. President Ruto was constructed with multiple conflicting subject positions, demonstrating a dynamic nature of political fashioning in a legitimacy crisis. In addition, while the President tried to reassert control through a package of consultative governance, Gen Z’s fragmented discourse infused the state narrative with grief, rage, irony and resistance. Kenya’s #EngageThePresident represents a reconfiguration of the public sphere in the digital age, one where collective emotion, decentralised participation and real-time responsiveness redefine governance discourse.Unique Contribution to Theory, Practice and Policy: The study contributes to the practice of Foucauldian discourse analysis by examining the accelerated pace of digital narratives in digital media in the Global South. It highlights a broader democratic recalibration in which citizens are not passive recipients of state narratives but active co-authors of the nation’s political discourse and statecraft. The study recommends that entrenching platformised engagement between political leaders and subaltern citizens has the potential to catalyse political stability for the maturing nations in the Global South. Future research on the impact of Gen Z awakening on the political destiny of President Ruto is deemed necessary
Feathers of Resilience: Poultry Farming as a Climate-Smart Solution
Conference PaperClimate change is progressively jeopardizing global food systems particularly semiarid agricultural regions in sub-Saharan Africa. Poultry farming offers a practical and effective climate change adaptation strategy. It provides a low-emission, high-yield alternative to traditional livestock, requiring minimal land, water, and capital. Poultry farming ensures a steady source of income, nutrition, and resilience for both rural and urban farmers. This study involved field experimentation at Daystar University, a leading private university in Kenya for over a seven-month period, observing a poultry system comprising 1,500 layers and 10,600 broilers. Layers were raised in batterycages and broilers were managed under a deep litter system. Day-old chicks were sourced externally and brooded on-site until maturity. Over the study period, five broiler production cycles and one laying cycle were observed. Layers consumed an average of 125g of feed and 75ml of water daily, producing 62.5g of manure per bird per day, which was utilized for vegetable farming. The project demonstrated a 28.70% return on investment, affirming poultry farming as one of the most profitable and sustainable agricultural enterprises in semi-arid areas. By enhancing food security, supporting gender-inclusive livelihoods, and reducing environmental impact, poultry farming proves to be a climate-smart solution with broad socioeconomic and ecological benefits.Daystar Universit
UFAA’s ‘Wezesha Mjane’ Program: Building Climate Change Resilience and Livelihoods for Widows Through Corporate Social Investments
Conference PaperThe concerted global call to climate change mitigation, resilience and adaptation mechanisms is finding voices in local actions by grassroots networks in Kenya. Corporate social investments are being directed to support community-driven climate change adaption, livelihood initiatives, and awareness, particularly with the marginalized constituency. Consequently, public and private sector organizations are leveraging partnerships with communities and stakeholders to deploy climate change mitigation and resilience programs that also guarantee their perpetual ‘license to operate.’ This case study examines the ‘Wezesha Mjane’ Corporate Social Responsibility program by Kenya's Unclaimed Financial Assets Authority (UFAA). The Authority’s CSR program is informed by the principles of investing in community affairs and functions; respecting cultural and social differences; championing activities that respect, promote, and advance principles of public participation; and desire to have a positive impact on people, cultures and communities. The case details projects that work with and benefit widows or widow-led households through Wezesha Mjane. Using a phenomenological approach, the study aims to bring out the underlying meaning and narratives of climate change adaptation and resilience mechanisms of widows’ beneficiaries. The findings will inform strategies of centering community-driven actions to the global climate change resilience actions through corporate social investments.Daystar Universit
Transforming Tourism Through Digital Communication: A Study of Marketing Strategies for National Parks in Kenya
MASTER OF ARTS in CommunicationThis study examined how digital communication enhances the marketing of Kenya's national parks in an era where online platforms significantly influence destination visibility, visitor engagement, and conservation awareness. Guided by Diffusion of Innovation Theory, Integrated Marketing Communications (IMC) Theory, and Relationship Marketing Theory, the research explored how tools such as Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and official websites are utilised to promote sustainable tourism. The objectives were threefold: to assess the digital tools employed by Kenya's national parks and stakeholders, to evaluate the effectiveness of these platforms in boosting visitor engagement and visitation, and to identify challenges and opportunities in implementing digital strategies. A qualitative research design was employed, using purposive sampling to select participants from the Kenya Wildlife Service, tourism boards, and digital marketing practitioners. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews and content analysis of social media posts, official documents, and digital campaigns. Thematic analysis was applied to identify patterns and insights. The study's findings revealed that digital platforms enhanced engagement, with Facebook enabling real-time updates and community building, while TikTok proved particularly effective in attracting younger audiences. However, disparities emerged between well-resourced parks, such as Maasai Mara, and under-resourced ones like Marsabit, due to connectivity challenges, limited budgets, and skill gaps. Opportunities identified included influencer collaborations, user-generated content, mobile optimisation, and integrated branding strategies. The study concludes that digital communication is pivotal for sustaining tourism growth and conservation, but bridging the digital divide is essential. It recommends investment in infrastructure, staff training, and strategic partnerships to ensure equitable digital visibility across all parks.Daystar Universit
