Linked Open Japanese National Bibliography: The New NDL Search and Web NDL Authorities

    No full text
The National Diet Library Search, called NDL Search, relaunched in January 2024. It enables patrons not only to search and request both physical and digital materials held by the NDL but also to search for materials held by other libraries in Japan by making linked data available. There are four new search pages for specific types of bibliographic data available on the new NDL Search website: Web Japanese National Bibliography, Web NDL Catalog, Web Japanese National Bibliography Records of E-books and E-periodicals, and Bibliographic Records of E-books and E-periodicals Published in Japan. These pages have specific search terms to make patrons’ searches for bibliographic data easier. This presentation will explain linked open data services of bibliographic and authority data within the scope of physical materials. The bibliography of the NDL has been available for anyone at no charge, whether the purpose of use is commercial or non-commercial, since April 2019. The NDL is working on adding various identifiers on bibliographic and authority records. The effort makes the NDL Search show links to metadata from other institutions via URIs on detailed bibliographic data screens. The screens also show links to the Web NDL Authorities that enable patrons to search and download authority data. The Web NDL Authorities shows links to various databases too, not only in Japan but also all over the world. These links have been expanded according to the “Plan for Creating and Providing the National Diet Library’s Bibliographic Data 2021-2025”. One initiative of this five-year plan encourages enhancing bibliographic data functions. The NDL recognizes the importance of expanding the use of linked data and will keep working on these efforts until the end of the planning term.
