    What role did seaport infrastructure and technology play in the market revolution of 1790 - 1860? Ship to Shore: Infrastructure and the Growth of American Seaports, 1790 - 1850 examines the role of maritime infrastructure and technology on the growth of American seaports during the Antebellum. It seeks to define the role of infrastructure as part of the larger market revolution prior to the establishment of a comprehensive internal national transportation system. This research addresses the void in the historiography of the market revolution, which tends to focus on the transportation networks of canals, railroads, and turnpikes. Infrastructures and technologies examined by this study include lighthouses, marine observatories, and warehouses. The role of lighthouses is studied through the economic loss of cargoes due to shipwrecks. The role of marine observatories is analyzed through the increased efficiency of seaport operations. Warehouses are assessed through time added value and the expansion of the credit and insurance industries. The study is focused on the New England, Mid-Atlantic, and Chesapeake Bay regions. It draws upon primary sources at the Bostonian Society, the Francis W. Peabody Research Library at the Greater Portland Landmarks, Inc., the G. W. Blunt White Library at Mystic Seaport, the Maine Historical Society, the Maryland Historical Society, the Massachusetts Historical Society, the Newport Historical Society, the Rhode Island Historical Society and the South Carolina Historical Society. Documents used include warehouse account books, papers of prominent community leaders, and accounts in historical newspapers

    Fracture Testing and Simultaneous Confocal Microscopy of Bovine Arterial Tissue

    Blunt injury to the aorta and other arteries remains a leading cause of death in automobile collisions. We sought to study the fracture mechanics of the bovine descending thoracic aorta and intercostal arteries to gain an understanding of the mechanisms of failure of the arterial wall. Fracture tests were performed on the bovine aorta at a series of locations and orientations. These tests were performed in a medium of phosphate-buffered saline (PBS), and compared to the use of deionized (DI) water. It was discovered that the average fracture strength of specimens stored and tested in DI water was higher than that of corresponding specimens in PBS. It was also found that fracture strength in distal aorta wall samples increased nonlinearly from the fracture strength at the aortic isthmus. A tensile testing system was created in order to test intercostal artery specimens while simultaneously viewing their microstructure using a confocal laser scanning microscope. This technique allowed for a unique perspective of the failure mechanism of the arterial wall

    Blacks and Jews in the Black Power Movement and Its Subsequent Scholarship

    The objective of this thesis was to examine the Black-Jewish relationship during the mid-twentieth century as the Black Civil Rights Era transitioned into the Black Power Era (1966-1973) in Baltimore, Maryland. Another goal was to analyze the scholarship on the topic of Black-Jewish relations during the Black Power Era already produced by other scholars, and determine whether the relationship in Baltimore mirrored or differed from the analysis of the national relationship. Lastly, the April 1968 riots which followed Dr. Martin Luther King's death serves as a case study of a singular event, which acted as a catalyst for change in the relationship. To analyze the relationship, a heavy reliance was placed on local primary documents, especially the leading print media of both communities in Baltimore, the Afro-American Newspaper and the Jewish Times Magazine. This is a study of both individuals and organizations as representatives of the Black and Jewish communities in Baltimore, including institutions like the N.A.A.C.P., Urban League, and influential synagogues like Har Sinai and Chizuk Amuno. Ultimately, the relationship between the Black and Jewish communities in Baltimore did not conclude during the late 1960s, as many national alliances did, but shifted, becoming more nuanced and complicated

    ABSTRACT Title of Document: NEVER AGAIN: THE IMPULSE TO COMMEMORATE THE HOLOCAUST AT THE UNITED STATES HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL MUSEUM AND THE BRITISH IMPERIAL WAR MUSEUM Bailey McGuire Ball, Master of Arts, May 2011 Directed by Dr. Rebecca Boehling, Associate Professor, Department of History This thesis examines the evolution of Holocaust consciousness in the United States and Great Britain in the second half of the twentieth century and the resulting commemorative efforts that emerged from what both countries felt to be a `moral obligation' to commemorate the Holocaust, a non-national event, in state-sponsored national museums due to its `universal implications.' The decision to commemorate the Holocaust in the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum and the British Imperial War Museum led to unique problems of promoting national identity and pride, which national museums traditionally do, alongside an accurate historical narrative of the Holocaust. This study investigates the methods used by the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum and the British Imperial War Museum to present to a public audience a narrative of an event that did not occur on national soil but that involved their own nation's culpability in the events of the Holocaust. Incorporating good and bad aspects of the American and British role in the Holocaust into a national museum narrative represents a new model for how to include national shortcomings in museum narratives. This new approach has influenced numerous new museums as they commemorate the history of discrimination toward various ethnic groups and inglorious transnational and international events

    The aim of this thesis is to explore myth and ritual as they relate to contemporary culture. To place this topic within a larger context, I focus on the work of Joseph Campbell, Mary Douglas, and George Bataille, among others. Campbell argues that a meaningful transformation can occur through an individual's exploration of his or her personal symbols, myths and rituals. The ritual-like aspects that I perform, individually, as part of my artistic process, result in work that is perverse and subversive, powerful and transformative. This production is not unlike that of the Dadaists and Surrealists, artists who created work that subverted and reinterpreted contemporary visual language. I describe my work, Clash of the Titans, in light of my research on myth, ritual, and the individual, and also in the context of contemporary artists Nancy Spero, Wangechi Mutu, and Jess (Burgess Collins)

    A Fast Fullchip Transient Response Estimation Technique

    Circuit Simulation has long been a dependable technique for design engineers for functional testing before a circuit is taken to silicon. But as we move into deep sub-micron technologies, chips are becoming more complex and denser. The dense power grid adds to long simulation runtime rendering fullchip simulations difficult and computationally expensive for larger designs. Some large designs may not even be simulatable. Even fast simulators like Cadence UltraSim fail to provide SPICE level accuracy. Dynamic solutions provide greater accuracy than statistical techniques but long simulation run time becomes the biggest tradeoff. Accurate measurement of dynamic currents is required for applications like power estimation, supply noise predictions and in verifying the power grid designs and testing. The research reported in this thesis is focussed on providing a current based method to estimate a fullchip's transient response without carrying out a fullchip simulation. Instead, a part of the chip is simulated and the power port currents measured are used to estimate the fullchip currents using the principle of superposition. A simple scaling method is also proposed to compensate for resistive variations in the test circuits. This technique eliminates fullchip simulations that are complex and time consuming but the accuracy is maintained as the fullchip estimation is carried out on simulated data. Experimental results reported demonstrate the effectiveness of the method. The estimated waveforms are compared against the fullchip measured waveforms and found to be very close estimates to the actual currents. Mean square error, maximum current difference and area error are the three metrics considered to quantify the error. The maximum mean square error is less than 10% for all test cases at significant power pads that draw majority of the current in the test circuits

    Estimating Temporal Boundaries for Events using Social Media Data

    Social media services like Twitter, Flickr and YouTube publish high volumes of user generated content as a major event occurs, making them a potential data source for event analysis. The unmanageable volume and noisy content of social media makes automatic preprocessing essential. Intuitively, the event-related data falls into three major phases: the buildup to the event, the event itself, and the post-event effects and repercussions. We describe an approach to automatically determine when an anticipated event started and ended by analyzing the content of tweets. We identify the characteristics of the data and the key challenges of using user generated content for our problem. We propose and evaluate different features useful for boundary estimation. We train support vector machines (SVM) to classify the tweets into the three temporal phases. We then develop an algorithm to predict the boundaries on the classified tweets while minimizing errors. We evaluate our performance by predicting event boundaries on Twitter data for six events in the domains of sports, weather and social events. Finally, we build a general classifier for sports and show that our results are comparable to the individual event classifiers
