Identifying and Addressing Barriers to the Discipleship of Believers from Muslim Background in the Arabian Peninsula
No full textBibliography: leaves 284-291One of the most pressing issues facing the rapidly emerging church in the Arabian Peninsula (AP) area is how to overcome barriers hampering the spiritual development of believers from Muslim backgrounds (BMBs). This research identifies the barriers that work against BMBs' growth and discipleship in the Christian faith and recommends culturally-relevant remedies. The study focuses firstly on the cultural origin of barriers and the cost of following Jesus that work against BMBs. The theological grounding of this research is then provided and the inherent tensions between the doctrines of Islam and Christianity are explored. This theological exploration is paired with an examination of discipleship groups and the commitment to gathering in the early New Testament church. Using qualitative research, external and internal contextual barriers were identified through a written survey, followed by individual interviews. External barriers include cultural barriers, lack of opportunity to fellowship with other believers, unqualified leaders/teachers, Islamic culture embedded in the community, and the absence of leadership. Internal barriers include fear, lack of trust, lack of spiritual maturity, lack of time and vision, Islamic culture embedded in characteristics, and an oral learning preference. These findings were used to develop a pilot project offering contextually sustainable solutions to counteract key barriers. In this thesis, possible benefits are suggested in regard to applying such changes to the practices of those ministering among BMBs in the AP and beyond.Thesis (D. No full textBibliography: leaves 191-199This thesis studied what Christ-like hospitality is and observed whether hospitality has an impact on building authentic relationships with people outside our church. Six individuals and the researcher used the methodology of action research to collect and analyze the data. The data were gathered through written journal logs and group interviews. This study showed that hospitality is an inclusive practice. Secondly, there are four reasons why we should practice hospitality: hospitality creates a space for evangelism, is worship, is a spiritual dynamic, and is a practice that needs to be recovered. Finally, hospitality is challenging and needs to have boundaries.Thesis (D. One Congregation's Journey to Connecting Identity, Worship and Mission to the Trinity
No full textBibliography: leaves 180-184This thesis provides a rationale for connecting the Trinity more deliberately with identity, worship and mission in the church, and a description and evaluation of a project in a particular congregation to accomplish this purpose. A small Wesleyan congregation in Ontario was taken on a journey from tacit to intentional Trinitarianism by emphasizing the Trinity in sermons, sacraments, study, worship, and mission. Resources included Natural Church Development's Three Colors of Ministry and Color Your World, Trinitarian liturgical material, and a self-developed small group curriculum. The assessments indicated growth in Trinitarian identity and intentional Trinitarian praxis, both in the project facilitator and members of the congregation.Thesis (D. Implementing and Evaluating a Missional Change Process with Mennonite Pastors
No full textBibliography: leaves 205-211.Many Canadian churches are experiencing a decline in participation and marginalization in society. This provides an opportunity to reconsider the purpose of the church. This action research project used and tested The Missional Network's Missional Change Model that is rooted in the missional church paradigm, in order to assist a pilot group of six Mennonite pastors to develop leadership competencies for a post-Christendom context. This group met for eleven four-hour sessions over a twelve month period. A pre and post 360 degree survey provided quantitative data regarding the participants' missional development. Qualitative data was collected from the 360 surveys as well as correspondence, field notes and transcripts of the sessions. The data indicated a positive development of the missional leadership capacities of the participants. Outcomes suggested elements that contributed to this development, including an experimental approach, a cohort model of learning and balanced leadership. Several learnings will assist future iterations of the process that may help to diffuse a missional church culture among MCEC congregations.Thesis (D.
