Exploring God’s Grace, Intentional Human Response, and Growth from the Holy Spirit
No full textBibliography: leaves 318-327In this research portfolio, the author explored spiritual formation as an ongoing, adventurous, individual and communal journey of becoming more like Jesus. The key question the research addressed was how Jesus’ followers can make progress on this journey, with an emphasis both on God’s provision and human responsibility. The author examined the question through three separate yet related projects: the author’s spiritual autobiography, which narrates a quest for God through a search for identity and love; the author’s articulation of his own philosophy of spiritual formation, viewed through the lens of Anabaptism, which describes the theology, goals, means, and methods of spiritual formation; and a research project into mutual accountability, which the author facilitated with a small group at his church. The conclusions are that the journey of spiritual formation is initiated and supported by God’s grace, with which Jesus’ followers are called to cooperate by faith (through receiving their identity as God’s beloved children, through participating in community, through practicing spiritual disciplines, and through participating in God’s reconciling mission), upon which the Holy Spirit blesses Jesus’ followers with growth into his likeness.Thesis (D. Refinement and Implementation of a Christian Leadership Development Model at Pickering Pentecostal Church
No full textBibliography: leaves 138-140This research project involved the refinement and implementation of A Christian Leadership Development Model (ACLDM) at Pickering Pentecostal Church (PPC) for the purpose of developing leaders. Empowering and developing leaders is a strong value at PPC but the church had not effectively implemented a strategy for developing leaders on a continual basis. This research project studied six participants as they progressed through ACLDM. The methodology used was primarily qualitative research using methods of data collection that included survey, observation and guided interviews. The Apostle Paul provided a list of qualifications for Christian leadership within the Pastoral Epistles (l Timothy 3: 1- 13; I Timothy 4:12-16; Titus 1:5-9). This list of qualifications was organized into seven growth categories. Participants focused on one of the seven growth areas and engaged in three phases of learning while in consultation with three supporting parties to determine if the model would result in leadership growth. The research indicated that every participant experienced perceived growth while going through ACLDM. The key findings resulted in the formation of a refined model called Christian Leaders Learning Cycle (CLLC). CLLC has proven itself to be an effective leadership development model at PPC and is recommended as a model for consideration in other local church contextsThesis (D. Finding Unity in Diversity: The Use of Appreciative Inquiry to Cultivate Common Ground Among Leaders in a Multi-Congregational Chinese Church in Canada
No full textBibliography: leaves 246-251.Scarborough Chinese Baptist Church is a large ethnic Chinese church in Toronto. Over the years it has become home to a diverse group of congregants who are of Chinese descent but who speak different mother tongues. Multiple worship services are held in three different languages. An action research project was conducted that used appreciative inquiry to cultivate common ground for the leaders of the different congregations to work together. The appreciative inquiry engaged leaders of the church to inquire and listen to one another’s stories and aspirations, and to identify the commonalities, values and experiences that they had in common. It took them away from the usual business meeting agendas to pay attention to each other and to work together in unpacking the DNA and lifegiving forces of their church. Through this shared experience, relationships were built and knowledge of themselves, of each other and of the church was enriched. Findings revealed interesting patterns of viewpoints and perspectives of the leaders, and unveiled a story of the church in her past, present and future.
