2 Samuel 21-24: A Theological Reflection on Israel’s Kingship
No full textThe chiastic arrangement of 2 Sam 21-24 signifies that it is not just a collection of miscellaneous material supplementing the Samuel corpus. Rather it is intentionally arranged to function as a theological reflection on Israel’s kingship. This paper shows that the three pairs of literary elements, namely, the two narratives (2 Sam 21:1-14; 24:1-25); the two lists of warriors (21:15-22; 23:8-39); and the two poems (22:1-51; 23:1-7), demonstrate divine responses to Israel’s request for a king. Despite his displeasure of their request, God grants Israel their wish and installs kings for them. The two narratives show the failure of human kingship that brings calamity to the people. The warrior lists are the manifestations of God’s providence in giving them fighters. The two poems reveal divine election of David as his messiah and that Israel’s ideal kingship should be under the governance and supremacy of their divine King, Yahweh.114-134For AODA accommodation, including help with reading this content, please contact [email protected]

Schism and the Spirit in Hugh Bourne’s Theology
Get PDFIt is normally argued that theological issues were not at stake in the separation of the Primitive Methodist Connexion from Wesleyan Methodism. While it is true that the flashpoint issues were methodological, there were underlying theological differences that contributed to the schism. Primitive Methodist co-founder Hugh Bourne had a pneumatocentric theology that prioritized the personal work of the Holy Spirit over the Spirit's work through the community. His Spirit-centred perspective led the Primitive Methodists to a more participatory and egalitarian understanding of the church, but offered little reason to resist separation from Wesleyan Methodism when conflict arose.
The Primitive Methodist Connexion was founded near the beginning of a fractious era of British Methodist history. For seven decades following Wesley’s death, Methodism in Britain splintered into a variety of ecclesial bodies, most of which were eventually reunited. An Integrated Approach to Spiritual Direction: Converging Spirituality, Creativity, and Cognitive Theories through the Expressive Arts as a Model for Christian Spiritual Formation
No full textBibliography: leaves 301-308.Christian spiritual direction today builds on both an ancient and an emerging practice. There remains both in the old and the new, a theological assumption that the “spiritual life and the practice of spiritual direction assume that God acts in the world and can be experienced in the world” (Barry 1992, 12). I focus here on the beneficial integration of creativity within Christian spiritual direction as one way to experience God. I present a complementary model that promotes the adjunct use of the expressive arts (music, visual, literary, and movement arts) within the practice of spiritual direction. I include biblical, cognitive, and theoretical orientations to support creativity as an enhancement to spiritual formation. A qualitative research study involved the active participation of spiritual directors in an expressive arts workshop, and the field application of the tools taught. I posit spiritual formation as a holistic process involving the body, the mind, and the soul and that true transformation occurs where these three distinct areas converge. This model also has application for spiritual clinical care practitioners, and ecumenical spiritual direction.
