The Dance of Spiritual Formation in Two Communities: In the Church Participating in Missio Dei and in Facilitated Contemplative Evocative Group Supervision for Spiritual Directors

    No full text
Bibliography: pages 185-189.In this research project Portfolio, the author articulates the importance of community in spiritual formation in three ways. First, the author shares autobiographical details that reveal her transformation from unbelief to surrender to God’s love, in and through the community of faith. God’s love sustains her in remaining in her local church to participate in missio Dei (God’s mission) in community despite relational challenges. Second, the author proposes a spiritual formation model, in the context of the full gospel story, to explain that Christians are invited to participate in missio Dei and are formed into Christlikeness in the process. Christian faith should have a communal perspective and be futureoriented. Christians are pilgrims journeying together to the new creation. She developed a process named “BLESS” to help Christians handle relational challenges in their church community so that they can continue be part of the local church to participate in missio Dei. Third, the author describes a research project that she conducted in which she examined the impact of group companionship on spiritual directors’ spiritual and professional lives. To do so she arranged contemplative evocative group supervision, facilitated by a certified spiritual director supervisor. This research project confirmed that group companionship in facilitated contemplative evocative group supervision brings spiritual and professional growth. This manifests in enhanced awareness of God’s presence as well as self-awareness for the spiritual directors and more welcoming spaces to better serve their directees.Thesis (D. Encouraging Church and Neighbour Engagement in a Subsidized Housing Community in Markham, Ontario through Appreciative Inquiry

    No full text
Bibliography: pages 156-161.Kin Village and Trinity Square is the largest subsidized housing community in Markham. Flow Without Bounds Ministries (FWBM) runs programs and builds relationships in the neighbourhood with the vision to see every neighbour at Kin Village and Trinity Square live life to the fullest by knowing and following Jesus Christ. This research project was developed through a process of theological reflection on the personal context, ministry setting, and philosophy of leadership of the executive director of FWBM. It was based in the discipline of Practical Theology and used the method of Appreciative Inquiry. The research project brought together representatives from local area churches and neighbours associated with the FWBM house church. Anecdotally, the researcher noticed a disconnect between these groups when they described their experiences either in the neighbourhood or in churches. The aim was to encourage engagement between these two groups. The participants led by the executive director followed the 4-I Appreciative Inquiry model (inquire, imagine, innovate, implement). The four-week process allowed participants to express their hopes for the neighbourhood and inspire each other with their experience and passion. There was uneasiness with the research process. Yet relationships between church representatives and neighbours developed which led to specific positive initiatives together.Thesis (D. Investigating the Effectiveness of Praxis-Based Leadership Development on a Group of Mission Church Planters in Foursquare Gospel Church Asokoro, to Enhance the Leaders’ Spiritual Intimacy with God

    No full text
Bibliography: pages 230-236.This Doctor of Ministry (DMin) Research Portfolio documents my journey of leadership development within the context of church planting in the mission fields. My Leadership Narrative traces my progression from a challenging polygamous upbringing to pastoral ministry, and from secular leadership in central banking to theological training. This illustrates the transformative power of resilience, faith, and divine intervention. My DMin research project builds on these experiences, my Philosophy of Leadership, and my Context Exegesis. It combines classroom training with practical fieldwork to strengthen the leadership skills, character, and intimacy with God of church planters in the Foursquare Gospel Church of Asokoro, Abuja, Nigeria. Fifteen participants were mentored so they could develop Servant Leadership and Adaptive Leadership skills, which aligned with Jesus’ approach to leadership. A digital questionnaire, the Conceptualizing Leadership Questionnaire (CLQ), and the Spiritual Assessment Inventory (SAI) were used before and after the training to evaluate the participants’ growth in these areas. Before training, 8 participants reported gradual spiritual growth, and 7 indicated substantial growth. After the training, 12 reported substantial spiritual development. The findings affirmed that combining fieldwork with classroom instruction enhanced leadership capacity, personal character, and intimacy with God, shaping both who the leader becomes and what the leader does.Thesis (D. Using Discipleship Evangelization to Encourage Believers in Northeast Thailand Who Are From a Buddhist Background to Witness to Their Family and Neighbours

    No full text
Bibliography: pages 189-196.As a cross-cultural missionary in Thailand, I discovered that less than one percent of the population professes to be Christian. I set out to strengthen the Christian presence in northeast Thailand, spending three years planting a church by evangelizing, discipling, and training local leaders, providing humanitarian aid, and building strong community relationships. I realized social barriers prevented local Christians from openly discussing their faith, so I proposed discipleship evangelization to empower believers in northeast Thailand. I conducted qualitative research to see if discipleship evangelization could overcome these barriers. The research revealed that participants felt more confident and motivated to engage in evangelism in their neighbourhoods and found the methodology valuable. The project had a positive effect on the church, evidenced by new converts' participation and the continued use of discipleship evangelization after the research finished. Conducting this research enhanced my understanding of intercultural relationships, contextualization, and leadership theory; engaging with the local community, I gained insights into cultural nuances and social dynamics, allowing me to build stronger relationships; through adapting evangelization methods to local contexts, my efforts were more effective; and training local leaders taught me first-hand the value of a strengths-based approach, ensuring reliable and actionable findings.'Thesis (D.
