Wonder: Mobile Creative Station
Access to Arts Education in the United States is often directly tied to economic status, preventing children in underserved communities from experiencing the power of creativity. Yet, art is proven to have an irreplaceable impact on a child?s development, education, and perspective of the world around them. Through case studies covering branding, advertising and promotion, business models, and related historical topics, current competitors and related organizations were evaluated and a need for change grew increasingly evident. Each organization and company selected to be a part of the case study analysis was chosen for its success in the non-profit sector or in the kids and family market. Ultimately, these discoveries led to the creation of Wonder, a mobile creative station for K-12 children in underserved communities. Wonder?s mobile trolley program serves to improve accessibility to resources, eliminate a need for transportation, and facilitate mentorship opportunities between students and local creatives. A brand identity, transformed user experience, advertising strategy, and secondary collateral were produced to embody the mission of Wonder. At Wonder, every child is an artist, and every child has a place to dream, imagine, and wonder

"Victory sits in titan's hands, a bolt from the blue, an era ends, in the triumph of luck" reimagines the origins of American football by melding together the iconography and acts of violence that connect Greek myth, American folklore and contemporary sports culture. Highlighting the hidden labor of women and their contribution to American football’s cultural mythologization, the ephemeral materials of the exhibition help form the maze that acts as the setting for this imagined narrative. Taking a journey through the maze the viewer is invited to explore the story within the colored corridors of Titan’s Temple while deciphering the symbols of a mysterious language. Acknowledging the viewer’s role in the interpretation of the narrative prompts questions asking how mythologies are created, who creates them and how do they impact contemporary life
An evaluation of water and sediment quality in a mine-impacted watershed: case study of Elm Creek, Picher, Oklahoma
Across the U.S. there are 1335 superfund sites that range from abandoned mines to old military bases that pose serious risk to the public if not remediated properly. The Tar Creek Superfund site, located in Picher, OK, is one example which could contaminate downstream water supplies via contaminated water and sediment due to the heavy metals, such as Cd and Pb, left behind from the mining activities. This study seeks to determine if the ongoing remediation is effective at Tar Creek which is located within the Tar Creek Superfund site, and whether contaminated sediment is migrating downstream through the watershed.
Contamination within local sediment did not appear to traverse downstream in large concentrations from the primary remediation site of Bird Dog South. Contamination levels, however, slowly increased in the latter part of this research indicating finer-grained sediments are making their way through the sediment delivery system. Contamination within the water column was elevated compared to the sediment samples suggesting greater flushing of contaminants downstream. Elm Creek is characterized as hydrologically sluggish and likely dominated by subsurface storm processes. The low rate of instantaneous sediment flux from Distal West suggests that sediment storage is the dominant process within this fluvial system
Infrasternal angle and associated external load in NCAA Division I football players
Optimization of training and performance is the ultimate goal of sport performance and strength and conditioning practitioners. Anthropometric measures and performance in athletics is a rapidly growing area of research, but there is yet to be any investigation on thorax shape, specifically infrasternal angle (ISA), and its potential correlation with performance. The present study explored the relationship between ISA and external load metrics in NCAA Division I Football players. We utilized dual x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scans to obtain ISA, and StatSports Apex GPS devices to collect external load data for nine athletes (M= 20.43 + 1.31) across various positions. Results confirm the hypothesis that a smaller ISA is associated with greater maximum speeds, suggesting the importance of thorax shape in athletic performance. No significant correlations were identified between ISA and any other external load metrics. One- way ANOVA test revealed significant differences in maximum speed between position classifications of big, power, and skill. The results of this study have implications for player position specification and tailored training programs, contributing to the understanding of ISA in athletic performance
Internet-based cognitive behavioral therapy intervention for youth with type 1 diabetes and depressive symptoms: a pilot and feasibility study
Depression is more common in youth with type 1 diabetes (T1D) compared to youth without diabetes. This study aims to assess the efficacy of Competent Adulthood Transition with Cognitive Humanistic and Interpersonal Teaching (CATCH-IT), an internet-based cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) intervention, in adolescents with T1D and depressive symptoms. Adolescents (13 to 17 years old) with T1D and mild (score 5¿9) or moderate (score 10¿14) depressive symptoms on Patient Health Questionnaire-Adolescent (PHQ-A) screening assessment were recruited to participate and received online access to the CATCH-IT modules for 6 months (requested to complete in 12 weeks). Statistical analyses included paired t-test for changes in Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D), PHQ-A, Problem Areas in Diabetes-Teen version (PAID-T), and hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c). Nineteen patients were consented, 15 met inclusion criteria and received the intervention. In the seven participants that completed the modules, there was a trend towards improvements in PHQ-A, CES-D and HbA1c. Participants provided robust qualitative feedback on the modules and areas for improvement in subsequent iterations, such as inclusion of diabetes-related content. Given the prevalence of depression in diabetes, feasible, low resource interventions are needed. Internet programs such as CATCH-IT can serve as an effective first line intervention in this high-risk population. A modified version of CATCH-IT tailored for adolescents with T1D may be beneficial in this patient population
Changes in the chronic and postprandial blood lipid profiles of trained competitive cyclists and triathletes following a ketogenic diet: a randomized crossover trial
Background The ketogenic diet (KD) is the most popular carbohydrate restriction strategy for endurance athletes. However, because the primary goal of employing the KD is to gain a competitive advantage in competition, endurance athletes may be less concerned with the influence of the KD on their cardiometabolic health; particularly their blood lipid profiles. Thus, the purpose of this study was to examine the chronic and postprandial blood lipid alterations following a two-week ad libitum KD compared to an ad libitum high-carbohydrate diet (HCD) and the athletes' habitual diet (HD) in a group of trained competitive cyclists and triathletes.Methods Six trained competitive cyclists and triathletes (female: 4, male: 2; age: 37.2 +/- 12.2) completed this randomized crossover trial, which required them to follow a two-week ad libitum KD and HCD in a randomized order after their HD. Fasting blood lipids were collected following their HD and after two-weeks of the KD and HCD conditions. Postprandial blood lipid responses to a test meal reflective of the assigned diet were collected at the end of each diet condition.Results Fasting total cholesterol (TC) was significantly higher following the KD compared to the HD (p < 0.001) and HCD (p = 0.006). Postprandial incremental area under the curve for triglycerides (TRG), TRG:HDL ratio, and VLDL-C were significantly higher following the KD test meal compared to the HD (all p < 0.001) and HCD (all p = 0.001) test meals but LDL-C and LDL:HDL ratio were significantly lower following the KD compared to the HD and HCD test meals (all p < 0.001).Conclusions Trained competitive cyclists and triathletes demonstrate increased TC in response to a two-week KD compared to a HCD or HD. Endurance athletes contemplating a KD should consider the potential for these blood lipid alterations, and future research should focus on postprandial blood lipid responses to determine if these changes manifest in chronic blood lipid shifts
Employing a new testing method for identifying fluridone resistance in Hydrilla verticillata
The problem of herbicide resistance in aquatic invasive plants poses a consistent threat to the biota in invaded ecosystems, as well as to infrastructure and human water use. Hydrilla verticillata is an invasive aquatic plant that has developed resistance to the carotenoid biosynthesis inhibitor fluridone. I used the method of double-mismatch allele-specific qPCR in order to design a new test for identifying resistant mutants of two different genotypes. After testing 138 samples from across Florida using two sets of primers corresponding to each mutant genotype, I found clear and consistent results for most samples and validated these results through sequencing and comparison to old data. In addition to suggesting that this is an effective testing method, my data found resistant mutant samples in four bodies of water outside of our positive control samples
Anthropogenic impact of lake surface water temperature of lakes: A case study of eleven lakes on the yunnan-guizhou plateau
In the past 40 years, the surface water temperature of lakes worldwide has generally shown an upward trend, with a significant spatial heterogeneity. Previous studies generally attributed the change in lake surface water temperature to direct impact of climate change. However, few studies have explored the potential impact of additional anthropogenic factors, resulting in an incomplete understanding of the anthropogenic influence on lake surface water temperatures. We thus propose a new method to quantify the anthropogenic impact on the surface water temperature of lakes. We selected 11 lakes characterized by significant variations in the intensity of watershed urbanization development on the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau in China for an empirical study, and discussed the trend of LSWT (lake surface water temperature) changes under the anthropogenic impact, as well as the potential link between these changes and human social policies. The research results show that (1) The mean annual rate of change in LSWT due to anthropogenic impact fluctuates of 0.06 degrees C per year. (2) LSWT is sensitive to changes in anthropogenic activities; a 1 degrees C increase in LSWT due to anthropogenic factors typically results in a mean temperature variation of 0.24 degrees C. (3) During the three years of the COVID-19 pandemic, LSWT on the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau was significantly affected by anthropogenic activities
Idiopathic Pathological Ketotic Hypoglycemia: Finding the Needle in a Haystack
Sick children often have a decreased appetite and experience vomiting and diarrhea; however, hypoglycemia (plasma glucose concentration <= 50 mg/dL or 2.8 mmol/L) is rare. Ketotic hypoglycemia (KH) is the most common cause of hypoglycemia presenting to an Emergency Department in a previously healthy child between 6 months and 6 years of age. Ketosis and hypoglycemia are now well understood to be normal physiologic responses of young children to prolonged fasting.There is now substantial evidence that the term KH describes a variety of conditions including both the lower end of the normal distribution of fasting tolerance in young children as well as numerous rare disorders that impair fasting adaptation. Recent advances in molecular genetic testing have led to the discovery of these rare disorders. Idiopathic pathological KH is a diagnosis of exclusion that describes rare children who have abnormally limited fasting tolerance, experience recurrent episodes of KH, or develop symptoms of hypoglycemia despite elevated ketone levels, and in whom an explanation cannot be found despite extensive investigation. This review provides an approach to distinguishing between physiological KH and pathological KH and includes recommendations for management
Chinese exclusion? Agent response in the market for owner-occupied housing
We design and implement a correspondence experiment to test for differences in real estate agent response to Chinese clients. In the full sample, real estate agents are no more likely to respond to white clients than Chinese clients. Subsample results show statistically significant differential treatment of Chinese clients in rural areas and in some states. White real estate agents favor white clients (7.90% higher response rate), and Chinese real estate agents favor Chinese clients by a wide margin (151.11% higher response rate)
