Birth Order to Foster Resilience: An Approach in the Treatment of Trauma

    No full text
Trauma is a deeply distressing experience that can cause physical and psychological consequences. With high lifetime prevalence, more mental health professionals are being called to work alongside clients who have encountered traumatic events and are struggling to rebound from the experience. The field of psychology has gained traction in finding deeper understanding to help clients overcome adversity through the discovery of inner strengths to foster resilience. Factors such as personality influenced by birth order have gained recognition for affecting an individual's level of resilience. This capstone aims to provide a comprehensive overview on how birth order develops personality and how it influences an individual’s ability to bounce back from adverse experiences. It will provide insight into what birth order is, factors that influence birth order, the controversy surrounding the topic, how it relates to resiliency and which therapeutic intervention fosters resilience. Lastly, the capstone will conclude by proposing a six-session intervention plan designed to help mental health professionals counsel clients to build upon the strengths they already possess to foster resilience and help them overcome their traumatic experiences

Supporting Students with Complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (CPTSD) Using Attachment Theory and Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) in the School Counselling Setting

    No full text
This capstone will explore and review research in the areas of Complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (CPTSD), Attachment Theory, and Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy. According to public data from the Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD), in 2021/2022, almost 50,000 protection reports were made to the Ministry, involving approximately 55,000 children and youth. Of those calls, 6,864 were made by schools (MCFD, 2022). There are also students who live in silence and fear with their pain, and they will likely require support within the school or classroom setting in other ways. CPTSD can be diagnosed after prolonged trauma occurs and has been empirically connected to childhood abuse. Attachment can be damaged within children and adolescents who have suffered abuse, however positive attachments can be reestablished. Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy is a proven therapeutic approach to healing the wounds of trauma, particularly within individuals suffering from PTSD and CPTSD. The goal of this current work is to query: how can students suffering from Complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (CPTSD) be supported in schools using attachment theory and Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy

Youth in Conflict with the Law: Somatic Trauma Informed-Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

    No full text
The purpose of this paper was to examine the mental health needs of youth offenders and the importance of the youth justice system to move forward a trauma-informed approach in working with these vulnerable youth. This paper provides a brief historical analysis of the youth justice policies within Canada since its inception in the early 1900's. The current youth justice act was enacted in 2003, as a measure to curb Canada's high youth incarceration rates in Western countries. Within the act, the use of diversion mechanisms and extrajudicial measures will be discussed and discuss the challenges of the current program in taking into consideration the mental health needs of youth offenders. Considering the effects trauma has on the body, it is imperative that professionals working with youth offenders adopt a trauma-informed framework, as there is evidence suggesting that youth involved in the criminal justice system have a history of trauma. This would be beneficial because if specific behaviours can be considered trauma-related responses as opposed to criminogenic factors, then community-based trauma-informed interventions could be utilized when diverting youths away from the justice system, including counselling. A recommendation of somatic trauma-focused cognitive behavioural therapy will be explored and needs to be considered as the psychotherapeutic modality in working with youth offenders who suffer from trauma symptoms

Understanding the Impact of Animal-Assisted Intervention on the Psychosocial Well-Being of Children Diagnosed with Cancer

    No full text
The standards for triage of care in pediatric oncology prioritize the need for safety and physical health. However, in this quest to ensure that the child's survival is a priority, the child's mental health may be impacted. With cancer treatments improving the rate of survival, many children are going through extensive therapies and treatments, which can impact their mental well-being, leading to increased anxiety, depression, feelings of hopelessness, and a decreased quality of life. Animal-assisted interventions (AAI) are becoming increasingly popular within the therapy realm, specifically in work that occurs with patients who have a cancer diagnosis. AAI has been generating research for many years; however, advanced technology and awareness have allowed the field to continue developing and adapting to meet the needs of this vulnerable population. AAI has been found to help decrease the physiological impact of stress and anxiety within individuals and is leading to increasing feelings of connection, safety, and community amongst children and families who are receiving treatment for a cancer diagnosis

Neuroticism: Development, Impact and Treatment. A Biopsychosocial Study of Problematic Early Attachment

    No full text
This capstone project critically examines the impact of neuroticism and how early childhood experiences influence this personality trait into adulthood. Neuroticism has become a public health issue and although we may touch on it in the mental health field, literature has demonstrated its magnitude growing in the medical field as well. A biopsychosocial perspective allows us to recognize the layers that encompass this issue and view treatment and healing through a multifaceted approach. Recommendations for counselling include ACT and CBT while approaching client conceptualization from an attachment-based framework
