Cultural Adaptation of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy to Support Young Adults of Asian Ethnicities in Canada Who Demonstrate Maladaptive Outcomes as a Result of Perfectionism

    No full text
Research has shown that in most Asian culture perfectionism is highly esteemed. However, the literature also indicates that perfectionism can lead to an array of psychopathologies and maladaptive health outcomes. Individuals of Asian ethnicities can have difficulties with perfectionism due to its similarities with Asian cultural values and perfectionism. With the rise of Asians in Canada and a gap in the research on perfectionism in non-Western cultures, this Capstone project provided a cultural adaptation of acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) to support young adult Asian Canadians who present maladaptive outcomes due to perfectionism. The findings suggest the importance of Asian family influences, acculturation, orientation to cultural identity, and its perception among young adult Asian Canadians. Based on the findings, a culturally adapted ACT protocol that emphasized role induction, the therapeutic alliance, and the integration of a systemic lens was recommended for clinicians who have Asian Canadian clients to manage the maladaptive outcomes of perfectionism

Leading the Indigenization of the Curriculum

The purpose of this capstone is to provide a discussion, supported by examples, on the significant gaps in the truthful teaching of Indigenous history and perspectives, and emphasizing Indigenous-led and land-based approaches. Due to Canada’s historical legacy and ongoing contemporary issues negatively affecting Indigenous peoples, a considerable erosion of trust has occurred. First Nations, Inuit, and Métis families and communities are actively engaged in intergenerational healing to address the damage, abuse, and, ultimately, genocide impacting Indigenous ways of knowing, being, living, and breathing since the conception of Canadian Residential schools. In the 21st century, Indigenous students now have opportunities to experience culture, language, and community in trusted education systems. It is critical for Indigenous students to feel a sense of belonging for achieving growth. Indigenous ways of learning, particularly through a connection with the land, play a crucial role in the process

An Exploration of the Risks and Benefits of Incorporating Physical Activity, Specifically Walk and Talk Therapy, into the Therapy Session

Accessing mental health support is not an easy feat for many people. From perceived stigmas, associated costs and lack of access, many barriers can impact the ability to attend psychotherapy. Research indicates many positive correlations between physical activity and positive mental health outcomes. Additionally, much research exists supporting the benefit that time spent in nature has on people experiencing isolation, stress, burnout, depression or other mental health disorders. Incorporating both physical activity and nature into therapy by performing walk and talk therapy has excellent potential to help many different presentations of mental illness, can help eliminate barriers and lead to better outcomes for many. This project reviewed studies on the potential risks and benefits of performing walk and talk therapy with diverse populations presenting with various symptoms of different mental health issues. Studies included both therapist and client perspectives and a variety of variables that come into play during walk and talk sessions. The research revealed that walk and talk therapy elicited many biological responses, including connections to the natural world and positive neurobiological changes. Psychological responses, including improved mood, focus and a lessening of symptoms for many mental disorders, were also reported. Finally, social responses, such as feelings of social connectedness and reduced stigma, were also associated with walk-and-talk therapy. It is recommended that psychologists wanting to incorporate walk and talk therapy into their practice consider possible risks and ensure all ethical guidelines are followed to hopefully reduce barriers and more positive overall outcomes for their clients

Psychotherapy Through an Attachment-Informed Lens: How to Work with Individuals to Move Towards Secure Attachment

    No full text
Attachment theory proposes that human patterns of attachment develop as a result of caregiver attentiveness during childhood. Depending on the quality of parental care during the formative years, a child may develop a secure or insecure attachment style, which subsequently informs and influences relationships, both interpersonal and to the self. The impacts of an insecure attachment style can have long-term and even intergenerational negative effects on relational and general well-being and can be predictive of addiction, depression, externalizing problems, psychological dysregulation, chronic pain, neuroticism, and suicidal thoughts. This capstone evaluates existing literature to determine to what extent psychotherapy may be utilized to help adult clients move towards more secure attachment. This capstone concludes that attachment style can be altered consciously and subconsciously throughout the lifespan and that secure attachment can be increased through therapy using approaches that lend themselves to self reflection, self-compassion, and secure attachment priming techniques
