Primary Literacy Instruction: A Design for Increasing Pre-Reading Skills

    Get PDF
Student practice and exposure to foundational literacy skills as building blocks to their later reading fluency and comprehension is an important aspect of fostering student success in literacy. Many studies explored within this work will attest to the importance of student engagement with these foundational skills in the primary grades. While many of these foundational skills are practiced, such as letter-sound and letter-symbol recognition, other foundational skills, such as blending and segmenting, are not prioritized as much, leading to some struggling readers continuing to fall behind. This work explores some viable solutions to introduce key phonological skills within the bounds of the prescribed curriculum to maximize classroom time management, student exposure and practice with these skills, and ultimately to meet the needs of struggling readers to improve their chances of reaching grade-level literacy expectations

Intimate Partner Violence During the COVID-19 Lockdown: A Look at the Trends and Treatment Approaches

    No full text
Taking a feminist critical approach, this capstone considered the prevalence of IPV during the COVID-19 lockdown and how it changed since pre-lockdown times. Various data measurement tools were used including police records, calls to domestic violence hotlines, online search trends, and self-report data. Risk factors for IPV were considered including belonging to a low socio-economic class, being unemployed, belonging to a patriarchal society, having a partner who uses substances, and education levels. Overall, it was concluded that there was an increase in the prevalence of COVID-19 since the beginning of the lockdown. Treatment approaches were considered, including tools for safety screenings, risk assessments, and safety planning. Mental health concerns resulting from IPV including PTSD and substance abuse were considered. Motivation interviewing and cognitive processing therapy were considered as treatment approaches. The literature revealed a lack of focus on minority populations, implying further research is needed for these groups

Special Considerations to the Best Practices for Supporting Young Adults Impacted by Alcohol-Involved Sexual Violence among a College/University Population

    No full text
This capstone explores the contributing factors to the prevalence of alcohol-involved sexual violence among a college age demographic, as well as special considerations and best practices relevant for therapeutic practitioners in supporting roles to these young adults. This capstone addresses the following five topics to help guide the research that was conducted: the specific characteristics associated with both problematic drinking behaviours and forms of sexual violence; the relationship between binge drinking culture and sexual violence; what "rape culture" is and how sexual violence is normalized and reinforced by the societal ideologies that influence college-age populations; the adverse mental health consequences commonly faced by survivors of alcohol-involved sexual assault; and the best practices and special considerations when addressing these common mental health concerns among college-age survivors of alcohol-involved sexual assault. The knowledge gained from the research on the above topics highlight several contributing factors, special considerations, best practices, as well as preventative measures that can be taken to help reduce the prevalence of sexual violence among this population; these findings ultimately conclude that there is no one single factor that creates this issue, which subsequently suggests that there is no one single solution to this issue, but rather a multitude of topics to explore with clients impacted by forms of alcohol-involved sexual violence

The Intrapersonal Predictors of Burnout Among Psychotherapists

    No full text
This paper consists of an analysis of 10 quantitative peer-reviewed studies to acquire a better understanding of the intrapersonal factors of burnout among psychotherapists. Intrapersonal factors are internal factors/predictors that occur within the self. The findings of the studies under review indicate various intrapersonal factors that impact burnout among psychotherapists, such as self-compassion, perfectionism, and emotion regulation. These findings offer valuable insights for psychotherapists, helping them understand which intrapersonal factors may be impacting their experience of burnout and suggesting that they have greater autonomy over their burnout. The results also have clinical implications for the broader mental health community, such as training programs and supervision practices, providing an opportunity to integrate a heavier focus on intrapersonal factors within psychotherapists' control. The author also provides a methodological analysis and discusses ethical considerations and recommendations for future research
