Effective Evidence-Based Therapeutic Interventions for Women Who Have Experienced Intimate Partner Violence

    No full text
This capstone investigated the various psychological interventions that are used when working with female victims of IPV and best supported within the clinical literature. This research project explored which therapeutic interventions are most effective for victims of IPV, and how literature findings can be applied to improve the effectiveness of these therapeutic interventions. This was explored through a literature review in which key studies were selected and analyzed in order to identify key themes related to the topic of exploration. This review identified a number of findings regarding the effectiveness of interventions Cognitive Behavioral Approaches (CBT, CPT, and TF-CBT), Interpersonal Therapy and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. The findings were that these approaches demonstrated efficacy in aiding female victims of IPV and a number of cognitive, behavioral, and emotional changes were identified. In particular, Cognitive Behavioral Approaches have the most support and were the most promising psychological intervention within the literature, however more investigation into newer approaches such as EMDR show promise for working with female victims of IPV. The selected articles were also critiqued regarding their methodology through a systematic process, investigating and analyzing their strengths and limitations

Performance Anxiety in Sport: The Interrelated Factors Contributing to an Athlete's Capability to Perform and Best Practices for Effective Management

This capstone project will aim to outline influential and important aspects of performance anxiety in sport. Athletes and performance anxiety in sport are synonymous; there is not one without the other. However, athletes can experience performance anxiety in incredibly diverse ways, which is dependent on a number of factors outlined throughout this paper. Along with an investigation of the conceptualization of performance anxiety, some of the most effective interventions for managing the effects of performance anxiety will be featured. My hope is that this paper will not only inform practitioners who work with athletes and performance anxiety, but also serve as a useful tool for anyone who is involved in sport, including athletes themselves

Befriending My Body: A Group Approach to Body Image Concerns in Adolescent Females

    No full text
Body image concerns are plaguing the Western world, particularly adolescent females. These concerns directly impact an individual's self-esteem and ultimately their sense of agency and worth as they move throughout their lives. There are not enough early interventions to address issues of body image and self-esteem in adolescents. Treatment is typically targeted too late when eating disorders and mental health disorders manifest. Adolescence has been found to be a particularly ripe time for intervention as it is a period of rapid personal and social development and many experiences during this time can become rooted in later struggles or successes. A school-based girl's therapy group approach with a focus on intuitive eating practices offers a comprehensive approach to targeting these issues and mitigating future struggles. Intuitive eating involves essential practices of self-acceptance, rejecting diet mentality and connecting with oneself to find intrinsic motivations and goals for health. Group therapy gives members the opportunity to find commonality in their experience, support one another and flip "peer pressure" on its head for positive change. Schools are an appropriate setting for groups as this is where the children are, the structure of groups is analogous to the classroom and costs can be kept minimal through available space and personnel. This project includes a proposed 8 session group to be run in schools with girls aged 14-18 that focuses on intuitive eating practices as a tool to navigate body image distortions, gaining adaptive skills that will support them through many trials and tribulations to come

    Attachment, Regulation and Interpersonal Relationships

The highly urbanized and transient world we live in today has caused millions of children to become separated from their parents (Rygaard, 2020). This leaves their physical, emotional, and psychological well-being in the hands of strangers who may not have their best interests in mind. The aim of this capstone is to explore whether or not an individual's attachment style has a significant effect on their relationships in adulthood. Furthermore, I hope to examine how emotional regulation shows up in relationship dynamics for each of the main attachment styles, and how dysregulation affects relationship quality for individuals with insecure attachment. In chapter three, I propose a workshop that provides participants an opportunity to receive psychoeducation about attachment styles and how to find ways to build relationships that benefit their overall wellbeing. It is hoped that this workshop will support those with insecure attachment strategies and knowledge about how to become more secure in themselves and their relationships
