Mary Mary 
Sitting in this pew in my blue dress 
makes me squirm unless 
I wear my red silk garter belt 
and trace its outline through my skirt. 
My crucifix dangles between my breasts 
where it belongs. 
I want to stand 
and let my dress drop, 
walk to the altar and lie 
upon it, arms folded under my head, 
feet crossed. 
Neither out of shame 
nor in search of redemption do I 
call to God while riding my lover, 
crucifix swinging. 
I am quite contrary to being 
separated 
sex from soul. 
Sitting in this pew, 
it occurs to me 
that the first Mary was pure, 
but put down in a barn. 
The second was screwed 
on the Sabbath and stoned. 
But had they been 
traveling together, 
Leonardo would have painted 
me.

Death of Love 
Watching the Moon 
and Venus set 
to bat wings flapping 
in bug catching time 
I can almost smell 
sonar 
clicking 
thrashing insects 
as I throw up rocks 
to the rhythm 
of bats 
bashing heads 
on vapor lamps 
that strain against 
banks of night sky. 
I'm rabid. 
Violets bleed and die.

backyard clothesline 
my white cotton 
gown 
snaps and rolls 
in the wind, 
fighting, 
longing to be freed 
from its 
clothespinned prison--
I release it, 
seek the safety 
of its familiarity , 
finger the map 
of its embroidery 
trying to find 
my way out of 
its maze of 
complicated pure detail. 
I give myself over to it, 
wrap myself in it 
and 
crawl beneath 
the quilts of 
a hundred hands ago 
to push hard against 
an angry sleep.

Return of Gray 
Music does not work for me anymore. 
There is too much world out there 
beyond these graying windows 
while here I sit 
alone in my shoebox, 
blinking into the future. 
I watch a childless woman, 
an orphan of the world, 
who is losing her looks, 
and counting her regrets. 
She tries to suck it in, 
cursing the goddammed lottery of things. 
Tomorrow maybe, I will be able to see 
the crumbling edge of the hole, 
the place to crawl up to . 
But tonight 
I just wait for the cold sting of dark.

From College to Career

Graduation can be an equally 
exciting and daunting time for 
some students. After years in 
the education system, it can 
be a welcome relief to be done 
with classes, though finding a 
career can be challenging for 
some. 
While many students have a 
strong idea of the career they 
want to ultimately have, it can be challenging to figure out where to 
start, or even how.
Bella Tylicki, a recent UAB graduate offers some insight into how 
she landed her job as an Account Coordinator with Peritus Public 
Relations. 
“I started interning there (Peritus) the summer after my junior year,” 
Tylicki said, going on to emphasize, 
“Get as much hands-on experience as you can before 
you graduate.”
While many students’ experiences will look different, it’s important 
to start as early as possible, and those first experiences can be as simple 
as shadowing someone for a day, or joining a club or reaching out to a 
professor. 
There is a growing misconception among students that the only ‘good 
experience’ is paid positions or internships. However, there are far 
more ways for you to learn and gain skills that are applicable for a 
variety of positions.

“You can spend an afternoon doing something that is 
worthy of adding to your resume,” 
Tylicki emphasized, going on to say, “It doesn’t have to be a super-
organized, 30-hour a week internship, it can be a project that you 
assist on,”.  The idea of ‘good experience’ is not only entirely relative, 
but most of the time, categorically incorrect. 
There are a variety of ways that students can gain different experiences 
and skills, and how relevant those skills and experiences are to 
positions or careers they are interested in, is entirely relative. This just 
means that there are more options out there than you might be aware 
of. 
A place to start if you are interested in more structed experiences like 
internships or paid positions, is with your professors. 
“Get internships if you can, if you can’t, get connected with 
professionals in the field through your professors, through LinkedIn, 
and just reach out,” Tylicki said. 
While it may seem daunting to some, your professors and department 
heads are the best starting place. Your professors may not only have 
previously worked in the industry you are interested in, but they will 
know people who are currently working in that industry or other people 
they could direct you to. 
“Your network really is everything, who you know really 
matters,” Tylicki added, emphasizing not to, “be afraid 
to tell people what you’re interested in, don’t be afraid 
to put yourself out there.”
 Intention really does matter, and if you express a desire for something 
and show that you are intentional about achieving that goal, the people 
you talk to will see that and do their part to help you achieve that goal.

How my PW Classes Prepared Me

Four years ago, I never imagined I would graduate 
with a degree in English. I wanted to be a high 
school math teacher and inspire students to 
love math. Writing wasn’t supposed to be my 
thing—until I found Professional Writing.
Like you’ll read throughout this magazine, someone with 
a Professional Writing degree can achieve more than just 
writing. Students can choose a career in digital design, 
coding, social media, marketing, publishing, editing; There 
isn’t a limit to what you can do with a degree like this. 
This semester, I interned with the non-profit 
organization GirlSpring, an online magazine curated 
by teen girls, for teen girls. It was an editorial 
internship where I read, edited, and published 
articles into the organization’s online magazine. 
But it wasn’t about individual articles. When editing, I 
constantly referenced the overall design of the magazine: 
the colors, layout, headings, and images. Each article 
had to be cohesive with the whole magazine. 
Developing Digital Documents and Digital Publishing 
are two professional writing courses offered at UAB that I 
took and loved. Developing Digital Documents introduces 
students to technologies like Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, 
and Photoshop. Each heavily used in the design 
world and very helpful for any student.
Digital Publishing provides a basis for 
how websites are built and designed. 
It introduces students to Adobe 
Dreamweaver, HTML, CSS, 
and WordPress. Coding is 
a big part of this course, 
and it is by far my favorite 
thing I have learned. 
In each class, there are specific rules for everything. We 
stress contrast, repetition, alignment, and proximity, 
or how we like to call it, “CRAP.” Of course, my 
mathematical brain loved the rules and how each 
perfectly formulated line of code or combination of 
design elements joined to create a seamless, overall design. 
All these choices combine to help viewers engage with 
and read the page or document we design and write.
At GirlSpring, I utilized CRAP every time I edited 
an article; I even coded a few links in the captions of 
images. My Professional Writing classes taught me 
how to write concisely, and I am constantly editing 
for clear and concise language in articles to ease 
readability. Subheadings have become my best friend 
over the semester because of how much they improve 
readability and overall flow of the document.
I couldn’t tell you how many times I would preview 
one article and then change bullet points or numbered 
lists just to allow for easier eye movement down the 
page. Just like we learned in class, I think about how 
a viewer would experience each article. How would 
they receive the information? Would it be engaging 
enough to keep them on the page and keep reading?
The decisions I make about the text and design 
stem from Developing Digital Documents and 
Digital Publishing. Without these two classes I 
wouldn’t have started my internship with a leg-up 
in navigating WordPress or recognized how valuable 
simple design changes are to a website or magazine. 
The knowledge I had regarding the digital space 
before these classes was close to nothing. I 
gained the confidence I needed to succeed in my 
internship from my experience in both Developing 
Digital Documents and Digital Publishing.

OTHER PEOPLES' GRIEF 
When you spoke I was thinking about Helen, 
her husband's wreck. You 
had just vacuumed under the sofa cushions 
and deserved accolades. She 
is reading The Cat in the Hat to her little boy. 
She is thinking, Widow. Two syllables. 
She is looking at the breakfast dishes he left, 
a few flakes dissolved in watery milk, 
and wondering what would have happened if 
they had never moved to Kentucky. 
You clear invisible messes because you 
are home in the afternoons with our kids and I 
complain about the dust and the smells. 
My job drives me to distraction, I say, 
its untidy details and the stink in the drain. 
I'm sorry I didn't notice the absence sparkling. 
There is no "but" in that sentence. Our 
son is chatting with the television and our girl's 
hair dries fragrantly from darkness to gold. 
This equinox is freshly bathed and I have failed 
to say thank you, thank you.

She said My darling green and slick fish of a daughter, still 
sealed tight I unwrap this to show you the only 
one left behind with me, not to give a perfect 
circle the fine minister said, said at the altar 
when it was slipped upon me did the slip upon 
me and now here it is, walked off my thin finger 
forever (perhaps) and yet somehow still at home 
now in my palm, see? Look at this, a heavenly 
loop. It's a butterscotch on the wet tongue, halo 
around the sly lamppost on a cold rain-flung street, 
gin-ring at the stemmed base of a quick martini, 
green olive left behind with pimento sucked out 
full ripe kiss remembered on a cocktail napkin, 
the bombast and charming lure of a shining hoop 
snake rolling dark rolling out of a dream, just one 
swinging handcuff yet left at the bedpost, yellow 
frost around the stunned eye of the gaffed sailfish, stiff 
lens of spy glass, burnished beetle spinning, spinning 
on its back, seen only once the tree has fallen, 
after lightning has struck that delicious winking 
secret delicious and, yet untold, that winking 
secret that begs to be fished out of its deep and 
narrow hole, perhaps you are who you think you are, 
or perhaps you are your mother's daughter or perhaps 
you are your father's. Know this now, standing here in 
the bright triangle of moon light on the knotted floor: 
There are some rings woman shouldn't hand down to daughters, 
should not mind misplacing, should not stoop to un-wrench 
the kitchen pipes to retrieve, but rather, and merrily, 
should allow the faucet's full cold flush to carry 
them off and into the swift current of mean and sour rivers.
