Alumna Spotlight: Amy’s Transition to Professional
As I near graduation, I can’t help but 
feel an overwhelming sense of nervous 
anticipation and excitement. Being a 
student is all I’ve known for the last two 
decades and, somehow, a degree and a 
polished resume don’t seem like enough 
to enter into a career field confident-
ly. And I’m sure I’m not alone in my 
anxiety. To put my mind at ease, I sat 
down with UAB alumna Amy Roberts to 
discuss her own experience.
Amy graduated with a degree in 
professional writing in the spring of 
2014 and was hired to work for Growing 
Kings, a non-profit organization dedicat-
ed to building up future leaders among 
underserved male youths in Birmingham 
city schools. Amy’s job primarily con-
sists of applying for grants and writing 
proposals; she explains that her role 
requires a great deal of discipline and 
planning. “I get a list of projects and 
deadlines, then I break everything down 
into a timeline and go from there. It’s a 
lot like leafing through stacks of essay 
prompts from teachers.” She describes 
her work as a technical writer as not be-
ing too different from being a student—
deadlines are tight and there’s always 
something to work on.
High levels of personal organization 
and self-discipline are characteristics 
that Amy had already worked to en-
grain as a part of her life. Aside from the 
service learning projects she participated 
in, she also helped found and served as 
the first president of UAB’s Profession-
al Writing Club. There she was able to 
collaborate with other students in the 
professional writing concentration and 
share in a knowledge pool. She believes 
that opportunities like this are invalu-
able for students and professionals 
alike. “There are a lot of great organi-
zations around campus and it’s a great 
way to network and meet new people. 
After graduation, no matter what line of 
work you go into, look for professional 
organizations to join.” She continues to 
emphasize the need to never stop learn-
ing, something that students are already 
“professionals” at doing.
Amy goes on to admit that she got her 
job in an unconventional way. She met 
her current boss at a party celebrating 
a mutual friend’s professional acheive-
ment. She said she was not particularly 
looking forward to the party that night, 
as she was nearing finals and was simply 
too tired to feel festive. As she got out 
of the car she remembers telling herself 
that she was going to go in, meet fas-
cinating people, and make important 
connections. Just a couple hours later, 
she met her future boss and got a job 
offer. Amy’s experience really impressed 
upon me the need to see every gathering 
and social event as an opportunity to 
network. This is something that I (and 
I’m sure many other students) do not 
take advantage of often enough, but can 
make the job searching process exponen-
tially easier.
When I asked her what aspect of her 
time spent studying professional writing 
had the greatest impact on her career, 
she said that every single class with Dr. 
Bacha had the most significant influence 
on her as a professional. “The proj-
ects I’ve worked on, and am currently 
working on, are all reflections of projects 
from my professional writing classes. 
I’ve created brochures, student program 
guides, e-mail newsletters, and right now 
I’m re-designing our website. These are 
all things I’ve done before, for the most 
part, in Dr. Bacha’s classes.” She empha-
sizes the need for students to really in-
vest themselves in these classes because 
the skills they learn there are practical 
and applicable later on in the profession-
al world. She goes on to say that students 
should “embrace every opportunity to 
try something new; take every chance to 
learn a new medium.”
This kind of multi-disciplinary knowl-
edge is what ultimately sets professional 
writers apart from others when inter-
viewing for jobs. “Today’s writer is no 
longer confined to just pen and paper, 
or a word processor. Now, you not only 
have to be able to produce great content, 
but you should also learn how to publish 
it on a website or a blog. Adding that 
extra skill to your résumé will make you 
ten times more marketable and far less 
expendable.”
Through my time with Amy, I real-
ized that there is not just one way to 
go about finding a great job. She never 
went through an application process or 
an interview; she just had a willingness 
to work hard, put herself out there, and 
remain open to anything that came her 
way. She also challenged me to consid-
er that the first job I get out of college 
might eventuate into being the career 
I have always dreamed of. The greatest 
thing any of us can do as we enter the 
work force is keep an open mind and 
always be willing to learn. There is a lot 
to be said for positivity and flexibility, as 
Amy so honestly demonstrates.

Professional Writing Program Changes

The Professional Writing Program has come a long way since Dr. Bruce McComiskey and Dr. Cynthia Ryan 
started it seventeen years ago. 
While the curriculum once leaned 
more towards purely technical and 
business writing, the shift towards 
technology in content creation has 
made knowledge of  digital platforms 
just as important as composition in the 
field. It’s more valuable than ever for 
professional writers to be well-versed 
in rhetoric, composition, and ethics, 
but knowledge of  platforms like Adobe 
InDesign, Adobe Illustrator, and Scribus 
have become just as important. Taking 
the nature of  these changes into con-
sideration, the staff  of  the Professional 
Writing department has in turn decided 
to make some changes to the curricu-
lum.
Why Is It Changing?
With developing technology constantly 
changing the way we look at writing 
and content production, these changes 
have been a long time coming, but they 
weren’t set in motion until a couple 
of  years ago. Changes in faculty-- that 
is, three new hires to the Professional 
Writing team-- have been instrumental 
in moving the program into the future. 
Dr. Chris Minnix, Dr. Jaclyn Wells, and 
Dr. Jeffrey Bacha respectively specialize 
in rhetoric, composition, and digital 
publishing, bringing the Professional 
Writing program beyond just business 
and technical writing. Although these 
professors have been part of  the Profes-
sional Writing family at UAB for a few 
years now, Professional Writing Pro-
gram Director Dr. Bruce McComiskey 
cites them as the reason why the pro-
gram now offers flexible paths for both 
the business and technical sides of  PW 
and the more technology-based ones. 
“We were hiring people then whose 
interests weren’t the interests that started 
the program seventeen years ago,” he 
spoke in an interview. “And so we just 
started to talk about what would be the 
best structure for a program.”
What Is It Changing?
In the spirit the multifaceted nature 
of  Professional Writing, these changes 
will offer students the chance to choose 
an aspect of  the field that they feel best 
fits them. Professional Writing ma-
jors and minors will now take Intro to 
Professional Writing (EH 315), as well 
as their choice of  Professional Writ-
ing electives-- four for the major and 
five for the minor. There are options 
for students who want to specifically 
focus in in digital design, composition, 
rhetoric, business/technical writing, or 
a combination of  all of  these aspects. 
Dr. McComiskey believes these changes 
will allow students to study the kind of  
Professional Writing that best fits the 
kind of  career they’ll someday pur-
sue, with the new Intro class being the 
perfect starting point for any of  these. 
“Students were not happy about having 
to take courses in other areas when their 
true interests lay in one,” he said in an 
interview. “We (also) realized we didn’t 
have a course that was serving as an 
intro to all the others, so we established 
315. We’re very excited.”
Secondly, a Professional Writing 
requirement will be added to the English 
major core alongside the pre-existing 
requirements in Literature and Linguis-
tics. While English majors will have 
a choice in what course to fulfill their 
Professional Writing requirement with, 
Intro to Professional Writing is thought 
to be the best option for those wishing 
to see exactly what it is that Professional 
Writers do. This class heavily focuses on 
rhetoric and ethics in document cre-
ation, but also gives students the chance 
to work with real clients to produce real 
documents for real-world use, including 
memos, newsletters, pamphlets, and 
other multimedia projects. 
When Is It Changing?
In this vein, the changes in curriculum 
are going into effect at a better time than 
ever-- right at the start of  the 2015-
2016 catalogue. Next fall, Dr. Minnix 
will offer an Advanced Composition 
course that will help students “develop 
a powerful rhetorical toolkit that we will 
use to analyze the work of  a variety of  
advocates, politicians, activists, hell-rais-
ers, and gadflies (past and present) 
who have used rhetoric to advocate for 
change in their societies”. For those 
interested in the educational aspect of  
Professional Writing, Dr. Wells is offer-
ing Tutoring Writing, which promises 
to “balance reading and discussion with 
hands-on experience and observation 
in the University Writing Center”. On 
the technical side is Dr. Bacha’s Digital 
Publishing course, where students will 
be “introduced to a variety of  industry 
standard communication technologies 
designed to help them prepare and 
publish interactive information (includ-
ing web-based and video productions) 
designed to function in a number of  
different communication contexts”.

Learning to write is not simple. In this course, students will explore this 
complicated process and learn practical strategies for helping others with 
writing.  The course will balance reading and discussion with hands-on 
experience and observation in the University Writing Center. Readings will 
include scholarly articles about learning and teaching writing, practical tutoring 
guides, and real tutors’ published reflections on their work. Projects will include 
observation write-ups, tutoring reflections and philosophies, and an academic 
paper appropriate for presentation at a tutoring conference.

Students in this course analyze how the act of text production is changing and learn 
rhetorical strategies necessary to publish information in newer communication 
contexts. Specifically, students explore how newer trends and technologies for 
digital communication are influencing how people read, write, interact with, and 
share publicly available information. No prior experience with any type of technology 
is required for this course.

This course teaches strategies for academic and public argumentation and provides 
opportunities for students to become flexible, adaptable writers who can engage 
a variety of academic, public, and professional audiences with the power of their

our research skills, and learn strategies for presenting our work in different contexts 
and genres.

This course provides a thorough introduction to composition studies, with a specific 
focus on applying the insights from composition studies to the design of student’s

There exists a common misconception 
in society regarding the usability of an 
English degree and other humanities 
degrees. They are often seen as archaic 
and inflexible. As students of the English 
language, however, professional writers 
know that this could not be further from 
the truth. They are curators and creators 
well versed in all things content, design, 
and project management. Nevertheless, 
some sort of disconnect continues to persist 
between what professional writers believe 
their degree to be, versatile and flexible, 
and what employers perceive it to be. As 
experts in written and visual communication, 
professional writing students already have 
an advantage, but there are some steps that 
even the most seasoned expert should adopt 
in order to excel in the competitive job search 
arena.
There is a generally accepted rule that all 
professional writers believe to be true, 
but it bears worth repeating: never call 
yourself a “professional writer.” Even if this 
is exactly what you are, which it is, this is 
not what should be on your résumé. The 
reasoning behind this is that it tends to be 
a broad term. With the countless industries 
that professional writers can end up in, it 
is important that you cater to the specific 
industry to which you are applying.
Employers are looking for some sort 
of expertise beyond document design, 
typography, and rhetorical analysis. 
That is why it is vital that you focus on 
the fields you would like to find a career 
in. That is, if you are searching to start a 
new job with a marketing agency, your 
title should be something along the lines 
of “marketing specialist” rather than the 
bland and relatively non-descriptive title of 
“professional writer.”
As experts in curating content, moreover, 
professional writers understand the 
importance of branding and maintaining 
the appropriate image. This should be no 
different at the personal level either. Create a 
personal brand and stick with it.
Find your identity; find one that is 
recognizable, original, and consistent. Coca-
Cola is identifiable thanks to its cursive-
lettered logo and high-contrast colors. Create 
a design and use the same elements across 
everything that may be sent to a future 
employer. This includes business cards, 
résumés, letterhead, and other printed 
materials.
As was said previously, find something that 
is uniquely you and use it to your advantage. 
To do this successfully, though, you not 
only have to think in terms of your own 
personality, but also the personality of your 
intended profession. If you are a young, 
energetic college student nearing graduation 
and searching to being a career in technical 
writing at a cutting-edge biotech firm, you 
need a modern, energetic look and feel to 
your brand rather than a traditional and 
conventional identity.
Just as you should use your personality in 
creating an individual brand, you should 
also use it to create and maintain a personal 
website and portfolio. There is no better 
way to showcase what you are capable of 
than by showing what you have done in the 
past. If you are an expert in Adobe Creative 
Suite programs, prove it with design and 
document layout work you have done in the 
programs. If you want to dive into the world 
of technical writing, use documents that you 
have created either while in school or during 
internships.
Applications to some jobs may require that 
prior work be submitted, so having your 
best examples close by and in one place will 
make this a much easier, more streamlined 
process. Include your website URL on your 
business card, résumé, and letterhead so that 
employers can find their way to your work 
on their own. Additionally, employers may 
log on to view your work even if they are not 
requiring you to submit examples of prior 
work, which can give you an advantage over 
other applicants.
The most important aspect of marketing 
yourself to potential employers as a 
professional writer, however, is to value 
industry experience over everything else; 
this sort of work is truly indispensable. 
Considering the way humanities degrees are 
viewed, especially in the highly technical 
fields professional writing graduates often 
find themselves working in, it is important 
to get tangible, résumé-worthy experience 
before you enter the job market. This can be 
acheived via numerous methods including 
internships, paid work, freelancing, or even 
volunteering your expertise to organizations, 
companies, and individuals.
More specifically, it is important that you 
obtain experience that is relevant to your 
desired industry. A student interested in 
pursuing a career in marketing may gain 
some interesting and valuable skills by 
spending the summer at a biotech firm 
writing technical documents, but it would 
be much more worthwhile if the student 
had spent his or her summer at a marketing 
or advertising agency or in the marketing 
department of a large corporation. Simply 
put, the experience gained for this student 
is not bad experience, per se, but it is most 
certainly not relevant.
By obtaining a degree in the humanities, 
professional writing students are often at a 
disadvantage in the job application process. 
Regardless of how they perceive their 
degree, employers have been slow to adopt 
the concept that a degree in this discipline 
is, in all actuality, very versatile and flexible, 
leading to many different career options. By 
properly marketing yourself and taking steps 
like the ones above, however, you can be on 
your way to that dream job in no time.

new to us. Professionals 
often find themselves doing 
things they never thought 
they would be doing when they 
accepted their position. Often 
the skills learned 
through these 
experiences 
can help 
define our 
careers and 
shape our 
professional 
image. They 
help us find our purpose.
FINDING A 
CHAMELEON
Robin Lehnberg is an 
administrative assistant 
working for smaller 
companies, and doing 
a lot of tasks he didn’t 
think he would. He 
was originally hired 
to do accounting but 
has been assigned many 
different types of tasks 
over his career. Managing social 
media, writing official documents 
and translating documents between 
languages are all hats he 
has worn without trying 
them on before.
FINDING A HABITAT
Robin says he actually prefers the variety of tasks that he 
has at a smaller company, as opposed to a larger one where 
the work would be more focused on a single type of task. 
A more intimate work environment also allows 
employees to bounce ideas off each other and 
help each other out when they get stuck on a 
problem. Having a general knowledge of a variety of 
tasks and freedom to collaborate in the workplace can 
increase productivity and also help employees 
discover skills they want to work to improve.
LEARNING NEW SKILLS
The hardest task Robin says he’s had was writing 
a quote to offer a service to another company. 
He hadn›t written anything like it before and he 
wasn›t familiar with the kind of language used in 
them. He looked up a template online to help him 
learn how to word it and found it very useful.
OVERCOMING THE WRITER MINDSET
The world of professional writing is a widely varied 
field. Sometimes a person may mainly write for their 
career and other times they may have a different 
set of skills used for the focus of their job, but their 
writing skills still come in handy. There isn’t anything 
wrong with working off templates if you›re new to 
a task or a particular type of writing style. What›s 
important isn›t really what you›re originally hired 
to do, or what your skill set mainly involves.
What›s important is being open to learning new skills 
and gaining experience that helps you figure out what you 
like and are good at. The unexpected skills you discover 
and your changing interests might end up surprising you.

Editing in Professional Contexts (Ryan) 
The two overarching goals of EH 304 are to teach students strategies for 1) recognizing 
and assessing editorial influences on a given document, whether an advertisement, 
a newspaper column, a magazine article, a textbook, a web site, or any other text 
that communicates, and 2) strengthening reading and writing skills for participation 
in professional and academic contexts. Some of the specifics we will address in 
the course include: levels of editing; editorial decision-making strategies; factors 
influencing reader preferences; specifics of editorial style; practice editing visual and 
verbal communication of ideas.

Introduction to Professional Writing (Wells) 
In English 315, students explore professional writing as a discipline and learn how 
to compose professional documents common to the workplace. These documents 
include instructions, proposals, memos, résumés, slide presentations, blogs, 
brochures, newsletters, and more. Students will take each of these documents 
through processes of invention, audience analysis, document design, drafting, 
revision and editing. Further, students will not only learn writing genres and practical 
skills, but will also think about the rhetoric and ethics of professional writing and 
information design.

Technical Writing (McComiskey) 
Technical writing is like breathing: we see it all the time, and we do it all the time, 
but we don’t really think about it very much. Technical writing basically drives 
business and industry, and, even in an economic recession, effective communicators 
are highly valued. Register for EH 404/504 Technical Writing and explore effective 
strategies for writing letters, memos, manuals, proposals, and reports.  Other topics 
will include ethics, style, revision, collaboration, audience, purpose, persuasion, and 
research.  No experience with technology is required for this course.E

Visual Rhetoric (McComiskey) 
Words have conventional meanings: we all agree that the letters d-o-g will refer to 
a domesticated canine. Images have conventional meanings, too: we all agree that 
diamonds signify wealth, that tattered clothes signify poverty, that the color red 
signifies passion in some contexts and danger in other contexts. The choice of what 
image to place next to a block of text is a rhetorical one, based on the audience and 
purpose of the document. Register for EH 456/556 Visual Rhetoric and explore how 
words and images combine to create persuasive messages.E

gazing on a forgotten nightscape 
the breeze in the open window 
is approximately thirty degrees 
my nipples are drawn and puckered 
I turned out the light so no one could see 
the ache of scorn blowing from nerves 
like a broken cobweb from a branch 
my native audacity is coming back to me 
I would like to spit on something 
on pretensions to love woven into a hammock 
or the lines that used to get me in it 
sex is not worth getting screwed for 
so the wind is puckering my nipples tonight

It's Nice at Nice 
It's nice at ice on the beach 
where bare breasts abound. 
Some bold and big, bob and sway 
as if to say 
so what if I'm bare today. 
Others, shy little mounds, 
daintily tinted and recently round, 
a little anxious at being uncovered, 
but not adverse to being discovered. 
For the men, for the men what a problem, 
to view without obviously ogling 'em, 
to be cool with their dates, Ann or Anna, 
yet not fall on their face in the cabana.
