Blazer Football announces
promotional schedule
UAB Football kicks off Aug. 29 for the 2024
season, with six home games scheduled at
Protective Stadium. For the sixth time in the
past seven years, the Blazers will start the
season on Thursday night. UAB students
receive free admission to all home games.

Civilian Response to Active
Shooter Events course
CRASE training provides strategies,
guidance and a proven plan for surviving an
active shooter event. UAB Police and Public
Safety regularly hosts CRASE training
across campus and will host free training for
the public at the Community Health
Services Building (19th Street) May 22,

Calling all musicians
Musicians, bands, rappers and vocalists of
all ages from across Alabama are invited to
audition for the 2024 Arts Block Party. Up to
four finalists will be selected to perform live
onstage Sept. 13 at the event, presented by
UAB Arts.

Sucker 
My lollipop-
slipped from my mouth, 
into my hair, 
bounced off my shirt, 
fell on my lap, 
and into the sand. 
My lollipop­
a cherry 
possession of mine 
slipped away, 
and I stumbled 
after it. Just 
as it left 
a red, sticky stain 
on my clothes 
and it fell 
into a mound of sand, 
my stomach became

And so the world, 
beautifully blue and green, 
asserts its meaning, 
and my last, least remarkable days, 
end. What fierce beginning? 
Only the sun, warming itself 
on my skin, teases me on-
it is morning, I have not slept, 
the world is breaking. 
And this is change, 
which I court 
and want to ignore, 
this flux of self. 
I choose among small objects 
laid out on a glass case. 
This will be the watch I carry forever, 
here is my ticket, 
and I must step on the train 
and leave the station too soon 
to sort through my old clothes. 
I linger at the window. 
Fences flicker by. 
The one who tried to smile 
as I pulled away 
still loves me. I'm gone.

The questions come up again: 
The country or the city? 
build a house or buy? 
Europe or Hawaii 
for 
the 
We live at home 
don't have jobs. 
honeymoon? 
Dreams stretch out our faces in lines 
which fit the middle-aged 
the last day before payday. 
and I tell secrets to my parents 
and he drives his grandfather's yellow stationwagon. 
I found a roly-poly in my room today 
a moving black dot on my indian rug; 
Too old for tolerance of bugs 
I threw him out into the basement. 
When I was young I made roly-poly houses 
from sticks I arranged in little mazes 
closed at both ends. 
My mother pays for my birth control. 
I always hate my jobs. 
Graduation still looks blurry 
and everyone knows you can't make a living writing. 
We'll have a skylight in every room 
so we can own the stars 
A jacuzzi in the bathroom 
He insists 
We'll have about a hundred years 
to watch the moths gather 
on the back screen door in the summertime 
when the sun exits like the last drunken 
guest at a party 
and the fireflies echo back and forth 
in lamp language. 
My roly-poly never saw the exit signs 
when I set him free from my prison prank; 
he was curled into a tight ball of fear. 
If you do not pass GO 
Do not collect two hundred dollars.
