Supporting Victims of Hate Crimes and Incidents: A Community Centered Approach
This 75-minute workshop will prepare service providers on ways to support survivors of hate crimes and incidents through the use of mini-lectures, discussions, and case studies.
Objectives: In this workshop, participants will: Understand the impacts of hate crimes and incidents on individuals and communities Recognize, identify, and understand how to reduce barriers to accessing services faced by people who are victimized by hate crimes and incidents Understand how to meet the needs of people victimized by hate crimes and incidents and apply this understanding to their practice
Background: Between 2021 and 2022, Irfan Chaudhry, Sunpreet Singh Johal, and Landon Turlock worked alongside several MacEwan University students to develop a guide and workshop to build community service capacity to support people whom perpetrators of hate crimes and incidents have victimized. In addition, several community organizations and subject matter experts were consulted and provided feedback on the content of the guide and workshop. The guidebook can be found here:

Multiple Interacting Stressors Influence Development, Growth, and Morphology of Pacific Chorus Frog (Pseudacris regilla) Larvae
Freshwater ecosystems are threatened by climate change and invasive species. Amphibians are important members of freshwater communities and are susceptible to negative effects of climate change and invasion. Furthermore, both climate change and invasion can influence density of amphibian larvae at the microhabitat scale because of larval clustering. To understand the effects of climate change and invasion on Pacific Chorus Frog Pseudacris regilla (Baird and Girard, 1852) larvae, a 2 × 2 × 2 factorial experiment was carried out with a climate treatment (future/historical; simulated as changes in both temperature and hydroperiod), indirect exposure to the invasive Brook Stickleback Culaea inconstans (Kirtland, 1840) fish (chemical cues present/absent), and conspecific density (conspecific present/absent). We measured tadpole survival and development rate along with variables related to body shape, including mass, growth, growth rate, body mass index, tail fin depth, tail muscle depth, tail muscle width, and rear limb length. We assessed the effects of 3 common and important stressors (climate, invasive species, and density) alone and in combination with the other stressors to explore their interactions. Climate change, as simulated by our study, had large effects on Pacific Chorus Frog tadpole development and body shape. Brook Stickleback chemical cues had smaller but important effects on body shape and development rate when combined with additional stressors. Competition because of presence of a conspecific tadpole also reduced survival and had large effects on body shape. Pairwise interactions were largely additive or antagonistic. Three-way stressor interactions were most often antagonistic, resulting in less-than-additive effects of the 3 stressors together. However, 3 synergistic 3-way emergent interactions were detected. When all 3 stressors were present, development rate was faster than expected but rear limb length and tail muscle width were smaller than expected. Our results illustrate that climate change and conspecific density have wide-ranging effects on amphibian growth, development, and morphology—effects which may carry over into the terrestrial stage and reduce fitness. Furthermore, our findings reveal complex stressor interactions that were not predictable from single stressor effects or pairwise stressor effects, illustrating the difficulty in predicting multiple stressor interactions in freshwater systems
Can ChatGPT Accurately Answer a PICOT Question? Assessing AI Respones to a Clinical Question

ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence (AI) text generator trained to predict correct words, can provide answers to questions but has shown mixed results in answering medical questions. Purpose:
To assess the reliability and accuracy of ChatGPT in providing answers to a complex clinical question. Methods:
A Population, Intervention, Comparison, Outcome, and Time (PICOT) formatted question was queried, along with a request for references. Full-text articles were reviewed to verify the accuracy of the evidence summary provided by the chatbot. Results:
ChatGPT was unable to provide a certifiable response to a PICOT question. The references cited as evidence included incorrect journal information, and many study details summarized by ChatGPT proved to be patently false, including providing fabricated data. Conclusions:
ChatGPT provides answers that appear legitimate but may be factually incorrect. The system is not transparent in how it gathers data to answer questions and sometimes fabricates information that looks plausible, making it an unreliable tool for clinical questions
Spokane Candidates Climate Change Forum 2023
What do local candidates for office think about climate change? How will it affect your vote in November? To aid citizens in their democratic deliberations, Gonzaga’s Center for Climate, Society, and the Environment is proud to host the Spokane Candidates Climate Change Forum on the first Wednesday each October. The Climate Forum has been hosted annually since 2019 and is a non-partisan space where candidates for local office can share with local voters and citizens what they would or would not do or support if elected to office
Caring for our Common Home, in This World and with This Climate
Cardinal Michael Czerny, Pope Francis’ choice to lead the Catholic Church’s efforts to address the climate crisis and become a better caretaker of the planet, will travel from Rome to speak on “caring for our common home.” With climate-related disasters happening throughout the world, and disproportionately affecting the globe’s most vulnerable, Pope Francis introduced the idea of an “ecological conversion” for humanity to protect the Earth in his 2015 encyclical Laudato Si’: On Care for Our Common Home. Czerny, who graduated from Gonzaga in 1968, oversees the Catholic Church’s efforts to assure humanity’s ability to live in dignity. Absolving Conflict Through Principles of Servant-Leadership
This article explores the inevitable and unchecked conflicts that arise between people and how it can turn into unmanageable rage and harmed relationships. Both instigators and recipients of conflict are ultimately wounded by its accompanying outcomes. By sharing several examples from my life, including the threat of harm from a deadly weapon towards my three-year-old son by his uncle, I demonstrate the hurt caused by conflict and how principles of servant-leaders can help individuals restore positive associations. When faith is stronger than the bitterness and hostility that often plagues humanity, love offers a longer-term perspective thereby opening a way towards forgiveness. The foundation of healthy relationships and a strong community is established by serving one another rather than focusing on one’s own self-interests. By implementing ten characteristics of servant-leadership including awareness, listening, empathy, and healing, I contend that people can transcend conflict and overcome relational obstacles. This in turn allows people to exhibit a greater capacity for love and forgiveness for the optimal well-being of one another and society at large
