On Servant-Leadership and Quaker Influences
One important aspect of the Religious Society of Friends has to do with the nurturance of seekers. The very origins of the Religious Society of Friends had much to do with the fact that 17th-century English seekers were already present and listening when the prophetic visionary leadership of George Fox spoke to their hearts. Out of that union of seekers and prophet grew a powerful spiritual tradition that continues toda
Servant-Leadership: Forgiving Others in the Restoration of Community
Servant-Leadership, Feminism, and Gender Well-Being (Song et al., 2022) serves as a source of inspiration and hope when engaging with the complexities of the modern world, one marked by a growing division between people and an increased entrenchment of ideals. In looking to servant-leadership as a guide for navigating the emotional and deeply personal rhetoric pervading public forums, learnings can be found beyond the established dominant-group ideologies and mainstream reasonings. The purpose of this article is to explore how servant-leadership, an emerging leadership theory that acknowledges one’s natural feeling to serve others’ highest priority needs (Greenleaf 1977/2002), can provide a roadmap for the restoration of healthy communities through the acceptance and demonstration of love. In commenting on the themes of freedom, responsibility, and healing, this article ultimately argues that in opening one’s heart to forgiveness, one can rise above the individualistic need to be right and instead begin to mend societies’ wounds
Servant-Leadership: A Forgiveness-Based Approach to Medical Errors, Complications, and Bad Outcomes
In the United States, medical errors, clinical complications and bad outcomes are often managed through a medical-legal system that seeks retributive justice, costing billions of dollars, and leaving patients and healthcare providers with deep emotional wounds and fractured relationships. In contrast, a forgiveness-based approach through Servant-leadership offers patients and medical providers a holistic and restorative justice that acknowledges shared suffering, addresses intrinsic needs, and rebuilds the sacred sense of community once shared between the two groups. This paper explores the benefits of a Servant-leadership forgiveness-based approach to medical errors, clinical complications, and bad outcomes, including its positive impact on patients, healthcare workers, and costs borne by society
Increased Risks of Maternal Mental Health Conditions Following COVID-19 Pandemic
Background: Women are at an increased risk of developing psychiatric conditions such as anxiety and depression during pregnancy. Psychiatric conditions during pregnancy can put mothers and fetuses at risk of worse physical and mental health before, during, and after the completion of a pregnancy. Previous research indicates that women pregnant during COVID-19 were at a greater risk of developing mental health conditions and being exposed to stressors. While most of the research in the field focuses solely on maternal mental health or interactions between stressors and maternal mental health, little research has been done comparing maternal mental health, demographic variables, and socioeconomic variables across pre-, during-, and post-COVID-19 time periods.
Methods: We conducted an observational cohort study of 703 mothers divided into pre-, during-, and post-COVID-19 groups based on time of enrollment.
Results: Rates of maternal anxiety (p \u3c 0.001), medication use for anxiety (p \u3c 0.001), depression (p \u3c 0.001), medication use for depression (p \u3c 0.001), history of postpartum depression (p \u3c 0.001), and medication use for other psychiatric conditions (p \u3c 0.001) significantly increased during COVID-19 and remained at elevated levels post-COVID-19 compared with pre-COVID-19. Income \u3e150% of the poverty level (p = 0.003), food security level (p = 0.010), marital status (p = 0.001), and private insurance type (p \u3c 0.001) were significantly increased during COVID-19 compared with pre-COVID-19 levels.
Conclusions: Future work should focus on stratifying the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on maternal mental health by race and ethnicity and establishing guidelines to support maternal mental health during epidemics and pandemics
