Background 
From 2004 to 2014, there was a 433% increase 
in the number of infants in the United States 
born with neonatal abstinence syndrome. 
Children who have been exposed to substances 
in utero often suffer negative health and 
developmental outcomes throughout their lives. 
These diagnoses tend to occur within the first 
three years of life. 
This project is focused on improving the 
outcomes, both physical and developmental, of 
children exposed to drugs prenatally through 
preventative measures as well as increased 
education and awareness. 
PICOT Question 
What are the mental and/or 
physical outcomes of children 
who were exposed to drugs in 
utero? 
EBP Intervention & Implementation 
• All healthcare facilities are required to offer to expecting mothers a comprehensive 
prenatal substance use support program. 
• Mothers will be asked to sign a consent form, which can be refused, to be enrolled in the 
program if use of illicit substances is detected at any prenatal visit. Further testing will be 
performed to determine if and/or how the baby has been affected. Upon placement, the 
mother is assigned to a team of medical professionals, including an OBGYN, neonatologist, 
pediatrician, substance abuse counselor, and social worker. 
• The OB and neonatologist would focus on providing any necessary medical interventions for 
both mom and baby during the pregnancy and shortly after. They will also have the 
responsibility of providing necessary education to the mother about the risks of substance 
use during pregnancy. The pediatrician will care for the baby upon discharge, up until 13 
months of age. 
• The mother is required to meet in person with the substance abuse counselor twice a week 
to encourage recovery, devise a relapse prevention plan, and provide any necessary 
guidance. 
• Social work will connect the mother with a peer support group with which she is required to 
meet weekly to discuss the challenges of substance use during pregnancy and post partum. 
Expected Outcomes 
Early testing and intervention benefit the health of 
both mother and baby, improving the chances of 
developing negative health outcomes. 
Improve mother’s awareness and increase 
education on the effects of substance use, both 
on mother and baby. 
Provide mothers with the necessary support to 
lead and maintain a life of sobriety to overall 
improve the health outcomes for their children.

Foley Library officially launched the Gonzaga University 
Institutional Repository a year ago last October during 
International  Open Access Week. 
At that point, the repository had just over one hundred 
items in it, including materials from Foley librarians and 
a few faculty members interested in taking advantage of 
the new service, including Dr. Brian Henning (Philoso-
phy), Dr. Charles Lassiter (Philosophy), Dr. Brenda Senger 
(Nursing), Dr. Adam Stivers (Psychology), and Dr. Kevin 
Vander Schel (Religious Studies).  
We are incredibly grateful to these early IR believers, 
who helped us refine our workflows, troubleshoot com-
mon issues, and set our repository up for success!

What is the IR?
The Institutional Repository (IR) is a 
valuable service provided to the Gon-
zaga community by the Foley Library. It 
serves as a digital access and preserva-
tion hub for Gonzaga research, scholar-
ship, student work, teaching materials, 
department content, and more. The IR 
is an Open Access full-text archive, en-
suring that work by GU-affiliated faculty, 
staff, and students is made permanently 
available and accessible both on campus 
and beyond.

How to get started?
The first step to having your work in-
cluded in the IR is to send us your CV. 
It’s that easy! 
Our staff and student employees will 
then work to identify what content can 
be put into the IR, pursue permissions 
on your behalf, perform accessibility 
validation, and then upload the material 
into the IR for you.

We are happy to answer any ques-

Since January 2023, the IR has 
been accessed by near 1500 
unique sources. Users are coming 
primarily from IP addresses regis-
tered by other education organi-
zations. 
Readers from 112 distinct coun-
tries have accessed materials 
in the IR. Gonzaga research has 
reached an audience from every 
inhabited continent and all of the 
states in the US!
Most of the traffic to the IR comes 
via Google and Google Scholar. 
Together, these sources make up 
nearly 90% of the referrer links 
navigating to Gonzaga IR content. 
In our first year, we worked to build relationships with departments and faculty inside the College of Arts and 
Sciences. Now moving into our second year of the IR, we’re excited to build new collections with other areas of GU 
as we continue to support our existing faculty, student, and department partners!

Hope Henning (they/them) is a Junior 
majoring in Women, Gender, & Sexuality 
Studies at Gonzaga. They are the first 
student hired to support the growth of 
the IR and also the first to have a work de-
posited into it.  In 2019, they co-authored 
a book chapter titled “Logos, Pathos, and 
the Absent Presence of the Persons We 
Eat” with their father, Dr. Brian Henning, 
which is a part of the Climate Bibliogra-
phy collection. 
“It has been such a fulfilling expe-
rience working with the IR here at 
Foley Library. Learning about the pro-
cesses of digitization and accessibility, 
copyright and permissions, has inspired 
me to consider getting a Masters in Li-
brary Science so I can continue similar 
work in a full-time career. As a student, 
finding out about open access articles 
and scholarly repositories has opened 
my eyes to new possibilities for my re-
search and studies.  I hope the GU com-
munity will continue to add their work
