The Mediated Juxtapositions Of Content Within Televised News Programs

    No full text
This study examined the characteristics of composition within the broadcasts of televised news. The examination was rooted in the work of media ecology, specifically the work of Neil Postman, and built upon examining the constructions of communication as a means of bringing thoughtfulness to the discourse of mass media communication in relation to televised news. This study examined segments of broadcast news programs over a three-day period. Segments taking place (beginning, contained, or ending) within the first ten minutes of each day’s program were subjects of content analysis. A local news outlet (Fox 35 in central Florida) and a national cable network (CNN) aired the programs examined within the study. On Fox 35, the morning news program, Good Day Orlando at 7am, and an evening news program, Fox 35 News at 6, were examined. On CNN, the morning program New Day and the evening news program The Situation Room were examined. The study focused upon the identification of soft news and hard news characteristics of segments in order to expand perspective on the composition of broadcast-news-based mass communication. In this, the examination oriented around the questions: (a) In what ways does the framing of hard news versus soft news differ within the broadcasts of news on television? (b) What juxtapositions exist within individual news programs and within individual blocks of programming? (c) In what ways do juxtapositions of tone and content exist when comparing news programs from different time periods (the morning versus the evening)? and (d) In what ways do juxtapositions of tone and content differ across channels and network profiles (local, national, cable)? The results of the study elucidated trends and distributions in regards to the composition of segments within news broadcasts. This allows for a greater understanding of the mediated communication of broadcast news for viewers in order to better understand the purposefulness of the communication’s characteristics

As always, I start by commending our contributing authors in this journal. In this tenth volume of the journal, I want to celebrate ten years of excellence and deep devotion to the principles of servant-leadership as a way of life. The articles in this issue are truly engaging and offer a compelling vision of servant-leadership. They represent the diverse thinking of people from around the world, and a powerful landscape of human insight that deeply inspires me. For a journal to accomplish a decade of integral work in any field is a true honor. For a journal to accomplish such work in the context of servant-leadership is to me an important confirmation of the wisdom, freedom, health, autonomy, and service that are the foundation of a more whole and healthy world

When Jesus Christ washed the feet of His followers and asked that they do the same for each other, He presented a servant-leadership style centered on empathy and agapao love, the compulsion to do the right thing, at the right time, for the right reasons. That style is as relevant today as it was so many years ago (Stone and Patterson 2005)

    Get PDF
Do you consider yourself a leader, whether it be formal or informal? I wanted to write this article about servant-leadership/quiet leadership to show the connection to all the quiet leaders in the executive administrative field. Robert K. Greenleaf\u27s definition of servant-leader is a person who begins with a natural feeling of wanting to serve first-to help, support, encourage, and lift up others. Because of their noble role model, others begin to lead by serving ( 1977)

Job Satisfaction in Relation to Co-Workers: Does an Employee\u27s Overall Job Satisfaction Significantly Correlate with Co-Worker Relationships?

    No full text
Job satisfaction is a matter that touches the majority of people in the industrialized world. Research regarding the relationship between job satisfaction and relationships with co-workers is somewhat incomplete. This study examines that relationship through the lens of Anthony Giddens’s theory of structuration to test the difference between theory and its implications. Surveys were distributed to three organizations asking employees a range of questions about their job satisfaction and relationships with co-workers. Results revealed a transparent link between job satisfaction and the relationship among coworkers

Law enforcement officers are faced with many challenges throughout their careers. Part of this challenge is preparing for the wide range of people they encounter on a daily basis, including those from various cultures and subcultures. Encounters with citizens of various cultures can be daunting because of the intricacies involved with language and rituals specific to culture. Recognition of these complexities is essential for law enforcement to be effective and avoid engaging in communication styles that are offensive or demeaning. This project utilizes in-depth interview and ethnographic research to examine the investigative interview practices of police officers working in a custodial environment and the effect an inmate’s culture has on these practices. The results of this research combined with the application of Anxiety/Uncertainty Management Theory and Uncertainty Reduction Theory, LaRay Barna’s research on cultural stumbling blocks and researched investigative interview practices are utilized to develop a best practices model for intercultural investigative interviewing in a custodial environment. The curriculum Guidelines for Intercultural Investigative Interviewing provides police officers with a pragmatic approach to custodial investigative interviews, which accounts for variations in culture during intercultural investigative interviews

Growing Taller: The Role of Empathy and Acceptance in Building Up Followers

While unable to agree on many of the subtle points of what leadership is or is not, many scholars define leadership as the influence of one person over another person or persons with the impetus of completing a goal or objective (Northouse 2010; Chemers 2014; Chhokar, Brodbeck, and House 2004). Two concepts are predominate in this understanding of leadership. One is the objective of accomplishing tasks; the other is the presence of power or influence in the relationship between a leader and her or his followers. The latter sets the stage for the focus of this paper, the examination and importance of empathy and acceptance in leadership practices

An Exploration Of Power Distance And Self-Disclosure In Asian And Pacific Islander American Cultures On Guam

    Get PDF
Power distance is a dynamic that can greatly impact the communication between a child and a parent. Parents instruct their children on what are culturally acceptable and unacceptable behaviors and communication methods. These cultural guidelines for interaction and communication remain with the child until adulthood and have the power to influence the child’s level of disclosure. This study is an investigation of power distance in the parent and adult child relationship and its impact on self-disclosure in the Filipino and Chamorro cultures on Guam. The study’s theoretical framework is based on Mulder’s Power Theory and also applies the relationship development theories of social penetration theory and incremental exchange theory to analyze and explain the data. To gather information, this study used six one-on-one interviews and 41 descriptive surveys to investigate the hypotheses. This research reveals Guam is a high power distance culture and that the perceived power distance negatively influences the self-disclosure of the adult child to the parent. The study also revealed that the extent of self-disclosure is impacted by parental reactions and perceived appropriateness of topics by the adult child. Moreover, the data revealed a new hypothesis that theorized that factors such as gender, age, socioeconomic status, and living arrangements might affect the adult child’s level of disclosure. Further research and additional subjects are needed to test this hypothesis

Crisis Communication Handbook For The Military Intelligence Readiness Command

    No full text
In the event of a crisis, a well-prepared and detailed plan to communicate with the public will maintain organizational integrity. A crisis communication plan can protect the lives of stakeholders, as well as the security of current and future missions. Large military organizations typically lack comprehensive guides for the leaders throughout the nation to assist them in communicating with the media and the public in general should there be a crisis in their local area. This project is an analysis and design for a handbook for leaders throughout the Military Intelligence Readiness Command. This command, composed of over 6,000 soldiers across 26 states and Europe, is severely limited with its only one public affairs specialist. Coombs’ (2002) Situational Crisis Communication is the primary theory informing this work. This theory promotes using evidence based analysis, which fits into the military decision making process. The handbook was developed using crisis communication literature, U.S. Army regulations, and working with leaders who will utilize the handbook. Once implemented, leaders will be empowered to inform the public in a responsible and productive manner while addressing the needs of stakeholders
