    Greenleaf was born in 1904 in Terre Haute, Indiana. He attended Rose Polytechnic (an engineering school) in Terre Haute for several years, then transferred to Carleton College in Minnesota. He graduated as a math major in 1926 and took a job with AT and T (telephone company). During his 38-year career with the company he served as Director of Management Development, originator of the world s first corporate assessment center, promotion of the first females and blacks to non-menial positions, a program to expose up-and-coming leaders to the humanities, even bringing in famous theologians and psychologists to speak about the wider implications of corporate decisions

    When Consumers Struggle: Action Crisis and its Effects on Problematic Goal Pursuit

    When pursuing goals, consumers often face setbacks that force them to reevaluate their goals. Yet, current goal theory offers limited explanations for how people respond to recurring challenges and disengage from their goals. Through five experiments investigating three primary theoretical aims, this research extends the field\u27s understanding of action crisis, a possible goal pursuit stage marked by internal conflict over whether or not to continue, and investigates it in consumption contexts such as patient–physician relationships, weight loss diets, and environmentally friendly purchasing. Experiments 1A–1C show that consumer action crisis encourages more disengagement-related and less continuation-supportive cost–benefit thinking than nonproblematic action phase. Experiment 2 replicates this cognitive shift, and connects action crisis to diminished goal-related evaluations and weakened commitment. Experiment 3 further clarifies action crisis’ influence on consumer goal pursuit by revealing decreased cognitive and behavioral engagement that does not involve a shift in construal level when compared to action phase consumers. Extending understanding of action crisis as a possible mindset and action phase, these five experiments advance goal disengagement theory by connecting changes in cognition, motivation, and behavior to action crisis

Asimismo, la expansión del uso de la energía solar en zonas urbanas puede contribuir a reducir de forma significativa el uso de combustibles fósiles. English Abstract: The United States executive that was elected in late 2016 has made it clear that fighting climate change is not among its priorities. Partly in response to this, several American cities have sped up their climate policies, some of which started being implemented years ago. The experience in U.S. cities suggests that the inefficiency of existing buildings is one of the key factors that must be addressed in order to reduce greenhouse gases at the local level, especially in cities with a high number of old buildings. Moreover, expanding the use of rooftop solar can contribute to reducing the consumption of fossil fuels

    Extreme Cold Consistently Reduces Seedling Growth but Has Species-Specific Effects on Browse Tolerance in Summer

    Premise of the Study Extreme weather events can injure plants, causing decreased survival. However, we may underestimate the ecological importance of extreme events if they have strong sublethal effects that manifest after several months. We tested the hypothesis that late-winter extreme-cold events decrease the ability of woody plants to grow and tolerate stem removal in summer. Methods Seedlings from four temperate tree species (Abies balsamea, Pinus resinosa, P. strobus, Quercus rubra) were acclimated to winter conditions in growth chambers, and experienced 1 week of warm temperatures before being exposed to one of three 24-h extreme-cold events (minimum temperature: 8°C control, −8°C, or −16°C). Seedlings were then transferred to a greenhouse where we monitored survival and growth. Three months after the extreme-cold event, we mimicked an herbivore attack by removing either 25% or 75% of new stem growth from seedlings of two species (P. resinosa, Q. rubra). Key Results While extreme cold had no immediate effect on seedling survival, the coldest temperature treatment reduced stem growth 51% relative to controls. Stem removal decreased P. resinosa survival in the −16°C treatment, but stem removal treatment had no effect on P. resinosa survival in the intermediate −8°C treatment or 8°C control. Stem removal did not alter Q. rubra survival. Conclusions Ephemeral late-winter cold temperatures can have unappreciated effects on growing-season seedling dynamics, including growth and herbivory. For predicting how extreme-cold events might alter large-scale patterns of tree distribution, seedlings should be monitored throughout the growing season following extreme late-winter frosts

    Exogenous Application of Methyl Jasmonate Alters Pinus resinosa Seedling Response to Simulated Frost

    Physical stresses, such as exposure to cold, can affect plant recruitment, survival, and demography. The ability of plants to tolerate physical stress, however, may depend upon the co-occurrence of other stresses. For example, although plants undergo physiological changes to increase defense against herbivores, it is unknown whether chemical signaling associated with herbivory can alter plant tolerance to cold. We tested the hypothesis that both tissue removal and chemical induction (via exogenous application of 1 mmol/L methyl jasmonate [MeJA]) would alter cold tolerance of seedlings of Pinus resinosa Aiton. Application of MeJA resulted in 18% less foliar tissue damage compared with the control plants (estimated via foliar electrolyte leakage) following a simulated frost. Leaf tissue removal similarly limited the extent of cold damage on P. resinosa seedlings. Growth in seedlings not treated with MeJA was slower than that of seedlings treated with MeJA following exposure to the simulated frost. Our work indicates that secondary responses via MeJA induction can alter tree seedling response to cold and may (i) help explain natural patterns of variation in plant performance, and (ii) be leveraged to facilitate agricultural plant tolerance to physical stresses under increasingly variable climate conditions

    A standard calculus problem is to compare the growth rates of n!, nⁿ, and aⁿ, where a \u3e 1 is a parameter. Here, we consider the growth rate of f(x) = (ax)! as x → ∞, generalizing to the gamma function Γ(ax + 1) to allow for non-integer values of ax. We compare the growth rate of f(x) to that of seven other exponential functions, producing a hierarchy of growth rates. We also further investigate the behavior of the function g(x) = xˣ / (ax+1), giving two different proofs that limx→∞ g(x) = 0. We also consider the locations and values of the local maximum of g(x) as a → 1+ and show an intriguing connection with the Euler-Mascheroni constant
