NOW 2018-10 October
Corpus of News on the Web data for October 2018.
The TAR folder contains linguistic data in three formats: Database: This is the format allows for the most robust searches and allows for powerful JOINs across corpus, lexicon, and source tables but requires knowledge of SQL. See Full-text corpus data for more information on how to use the database format. Linear Text: This format provides a textID for each text, and then the entire text on the same line. In this format, words are not annotated for part of speech or lemma. In addition, contracted words like can\u27t are separated into two parts (ca n\u27t) and punctuation is separated from words (eye level . As her). Word, Lemma, Part of Speech: Texts are separated by a line with ## and the textID
Make Your Life Extraordinary: The Teacher as Servant-Leader
The essence of teaching and learning captures the noblest aspects of a person s inner being. Its foundation rests on the conscious giving of self, the creative sharing of one s knowledge and insights, and the contribution to the growth and development of others. Teaching has the capacity to enrich the potential of others. The learning process has the energy to transform the capabilities of others so that the lives of all become better and more fulfilled. Teaching transcends the ordinary, empowering all. Through giving, caring, and sharing, effective teachers establish genuine relationships with their students, thereby enabling them to lead more capable and meaningful lives
Servant-Leadership in Higher Education in Saudi Arabia
Saudi Arabia is seeking to create more effective leaders who meet the highest needs of individuals without using their authority to complete tasks. When looking deeply at servant leadership approach in higher education in Saudi Arabia, no known studies reflected what is really happening in practice with Saudi higher educational leaders in terms of defining and providing service. To better understand their leadership methods, it is significant to address their ways of employing authority in their day-to-day operations since power is tightly linked to leadership. The purpose of this paper is to provide an analysis of servant-leadership as it applies to higher education in Saudi Arabia. It also aims to analyze the authority practiced by higher educational leaders as a significant pillar of servant leadership
Cultivating a Shared Sense of Place: Ethnic Mexicans and the Environment in Twentieth-Century Kansas City
This article explores the history, employment, and presence of ethnic Mexicans in the Kansas City metropolitan area beginning in the early twentieth century through economic, political, and natural changes, highlighting their creation of a shared sense of place. Includes analysis of the impact of railroad and commerce development, residential layout and urban planning, the major flood of 1951, and the construction of freeways after the 1950s. Local community is revealed through oral histories, population data, and specific efforts including construction of an innovative neighborhood park, maintenance and style of homes, and the revitalization of Kansas City\u27s Westside after the 1970s

An Exploration into Various Methods for Comparing Known Polygon Dissections
The Wallace-Bolyai-Gerwien theorem states any polygon can be decomposed into a finite number of polygonal pieces that can be translated and rotated to form any polygon of equal area. However, the minimal number of pieces to form a common dissection remains unknown, as does any proved methodology for determining the minimum number of pieces. Using known dissections, we investigate mathematical similarities between the dissections. Specifically, we attempt to determine an efficient way to test for the minimum number of pieces
Diversity and Resistance to Change: Macro Conditions for Marginalization in Post-industrial Societies
We argue that two society-level properties—resistance to change and diversity within a culture—significantly affect agents\u27 degrees of marginalization, which is here defined as access to cultural knowledge and institutional means for accomplishing cultural goals. We develop an agent-based model using findings from Norasakkunkit et al. We found that varying the degrees of resistance to change and diversity affected similarities between the mainstream subculture and other subcultures, changes in subcultures over time, and the relative population proportion of each subculture. In particular, we found that high diversity and low resistance to change created the greatest cultural changes within the marginalized subculture over time and allowed for maximal growth of rebellious subcultures. Also, low diversity and high resistance to change allowed for maximal growth of the marginalized subcultures and the greatest overlap between the marginalized and mainstream subcultures. These have important implications for understanding the emergence and maintenance of marginalization in post-industrial societies
