Our Sole Ambition is to Publish the Best Writing Possible : A Chat With Michael Ray, Editor of Zoetrope

    Get PDF
It\u27s hard not to be awed by Zoetrope. In the world of small press publishing, Zoetrope is pretty much The Godfather of Literary Magazines. Zoetrope appears quarterly and offers up a wholly new look—and sometimes texture—with every issue. Guest designers have included Tom Waits, P.J. Harvey, Jeff Koons, and Mikhail Baryshnikov, to name just a few. Zoetrope has published the likes of Woody Allen, Kurt Vonnegut and Salman Rushdie, as well as filmmakers like Gus Van Sant and Miranda July. Then too there is the Classic Reprint feature: in every issue, a short story that inspired a movie is published. Such stories have included Alice Munro\u27s The Bear Came Over the Mountain, which inspired Sarah Polley\u27s film Away from Her, and a screenplay by Wes Anderson that inspired the short film Hotel Chevalier. Oh, and one other thing: the magazine was founded by Francis Ford Coppola. Needless to say, it was a thrill to speak with Michael Ray, Editor of Zoetrope. Ray has written for magazines and film, and became editor of Zoetrope in 2001

“I Don’t See a Journal Promoting South Asian Poets as a Narrow Boundary : A Chat with Sreshtha Sen, Editor of The Shoreline Review

In its mission statement, the editors of The Shoreline Review, which debuted in 2018, write: “TSR has its eye on the shoreline. We’re dedicated to publishing writers who are commonly excluded from mainstream literary communities. If your writing explores issues of feminism, casteism, nationalism, self-determinism, racism or you identify as queer, trans, differently abled or otherwise marginalized, thanks to the higher authority of powerful publishing houses, we encourage you to submit. Note: The Shoreline Review currently only accepts submissions from poets who identify as South Asian

New York and Other Diverse Countries: Brooklyn Lit Mag is Home for High-Quality Prose and Art Criticism; Review of Brooklyn Rail, Spring 2016

    Get PDF
The Brooklyn Rail’s dogged pursuit of good art and art criticism is one trait that’s helped it thrive for so long; the journal has published smart, largely accessible art criticism, essays, fiction, and poetry since its founding in 2000 by a cohort of artists including the painter Phong Bui, who remains its Publisher today. But the Rail’s adherence to high editorial standards mark it as a truly special journal, one that Bui calls a “social sculpture” or “work of art.” In an age when your average media consumer won’t view a work of art unless he is fooled into doing it, The Brooklyn Rail is something of an anomaly

A Community-First Journal of Poetry; Review of Verse-Virtual, Winter 2019

    Get PDF
I was excited to discover a poetry-only journal, but that excitement soon gave way to disappointment since the journal is a journal in name only. The site is more like a collection of names with one or more poems posted. Of the thirty-one poets published in February’s issue of Verse-Virtual, eleven are contributing editors. Poems run the gamut from those by poets who read and study poetry to those who want to wear a shirt with the word, Poet, on the front. Most poems share the feel that they were written by folks well beyond their twenties with topics ranging from a love poem about octogenarians by Marilyn Taylor to an ekphrastic poem about cigar labels by Michael Gessner to a couple of poems by Pratibha Kelapure that are four and five lines in length

¡Qué Bueno! Literary Magazines for Latino and Bilingual Writers

    Get PDF
As The Acentos Review website states, “The debate may rage forever as to who or what constitutes Latin@ art...We are already here, writing the histories of our neighborhoods, following the traditions of our ancestors, as well as the poetic traditions that came before us.” Whereas Latino writers may be among the underrepresented, underappreciated artists of our world, there are certainly many outlets carved out specifically for them to display their talents. There are also many encouraging communities out there, like the Latino Writer’s Collective of Kansas City, and the Facebook community Con Tinta which “believes in affirming a pro-active presence in American literature,” for Chicano and Latino writers. So, to the writers of the Spanish language, to all Hispanics, Latinos, Chicanos, here are the literary magazines specifically eager to celebrate your writing

Hateful Emotional Responses Scale (HatERS): Development and Initial Evaluation

    Get PDF
The present investigation consists of two studies designed to provide a preliminary examination of a new scale for measuring hateful emotional responses to being hurt by an offender. Study 1 involved definition of hateful emotional responses, item development, analysis of internal consistency, and convergent and incremental validity. The scale was evaluated in a sample of 33 young (M = 26) college and community adults. A five-item hateful emotional responses scale was developed and psychometric properties of the scale were encouraging. Study 2 involved using the five-item scale developed and evaluated in Study 1 and examining factorial validity and sensitivity to change in hate as a result of attending a lecture on hate reduction. Results of confirmatory factor analysis showed that the scale had acceptable unidimensional factor structure and standardized loadings were all statistically significant and moderate to large in magnitude. The scale also showed expected sensitivity to change. Study 2 participants were 47 middle-aged (M = 50) churchgoers. These initial results suggest that the scale may hold promise for further development in samples of broader, larger, and more varied individuals, communities, and nations

Social Justice and Liturgical Practice: Engaging the Earth/ Cultivating Solidarity

    No full text
In North America, across the political spectrum, we have a strong tendency to reduce religion to nothing more than a tool to promote our own socio-political views. Tis is a natural consequence of our hyper-polarized culture and our impoverished view of “religion.” It is also, however, a problem—particularly for those inspired by the call to renewal through an integration of the quest for social justice and the pursuit of the spiritual life. By focusing on the value of participating in religious liturgy, I show how a renewed respect for religion can help the proponents of social justice fulfill some of the foundational desires of the original aggiornamento movement and, thereby, to bring to fruition some of its dormant promise. Tis includes, in particular, the desire for social harmony and the desire to pay greater attention to our concrete reality

Did Servant-Leadership Save the Lone Survivor? The Pashtunwali Ethos as a Foundation for the Practice of Servant-Leadership

    Get PDF
Servant-leadership is a unique leadership philosophy that, according to Greenleaf (1970, 1977), asserts that an effective leader must first be a servant whose primary goal is to serve the needs and interests of others. Stated differently, a servant-leader supports and develops those among his or her followership (Northouse, 2013). In fact, Stone, Russell, and Patterson (2004) suggest that its central focus on serving followers is what differentiates servant-leadership from other leadership styles. Additionally, servant-leaders express humility, authenticity, interpersonal acceptance and stewardship, and provide directions and empower followers, all of which ultimately leads to organizational success (Dierendonck & Nuijten, 2011; Northouse, 2013)
