ADHD Gender Difference Knowledge Gaps in Elementary School Educators
Boys and girls with ADHD are treated and perceived differently, with boys being 3-16 times more likely to be diagnosed in childhood. However, the rates of men and women with ADHD are roughly equal in adulthood, meaning girls are going undiagnosed. With teachers often being the first line of defense to gaining interventions and a diagnosis, the purpose of this study is to examine whether or not there are gaps in knowledge in Washington State elementary school teachers regarding the differences in the presentation of ADHD across genders. This study used an anonymous survey sent to elementary school teachers across Washington state to evaluate potential knowledge gaps based on previous research. Results showed that the top two knowledge gaps occurred with respect to which gender of student with ADHD were more likely to struggle in school, as well as which gender of student was more likely to be affected by ADHD. Based on the findings of this study, more targeted education about ADHD gender differences may be needed in order to increase awareness regarding how ADHD affects girls versus boys
Mozart and Migos, Graffiti and Murals: Classism in the Art World
Art is understood to have “culturally significant meaning, skillfully encoded in an affecting, sensuous medium” (Freeland 2001). It’s a reflection of the human condition, eliciting critical thinking. It reveals what we value and believe from a moral standpoint, transcending class in the effort to evoke creativity and shape society. However, to believe that art is classless is to overlook major divides in where art is exhibited, the themes it contains, and what materials are used to create it (Lezra et al., 2021). Black-based art forms are often demonized, labeled and criticized more harshly than their white counterparts. Attitudes toward graffiti have been controversial since there was a war declared against it in the early 1970’s by John Lindsay, the mayor of New York (Mansbach, 2013). In comparison, city murals are commissioned by established artists and proudly displayed on corporate and government buildings (Cowick, 2015). Similarly, rap music uses its wordplay as a narrative, declaring socio-political messages much like graffiti (ArtLife, 2023). Rap has been perceived as typical of the lower class, while classical music has been associated with European high society. It serves as the epitome of musical sophistication and is framed as a symbol of intellectual and cultural superiority (Cian et al., 2021). Like graffiti, there is class-based distinction in musical taste. This poster will argue that culturally dominant stereotypes about American minorities and the poor have led to these differences in the practice and acceptance of graffiti and city-sanctioned murals, as well as rap and classical music. We will end by sharing suggestions for how graffiti may be brought into the mainstream and recognized for its contribution as art, along with pushing for appreciation of hip-hop culture
The Effect of the Current Administration\u27s Executive Orders on Humanitarian Aid Projects and the Efforts of the Local Community to Adapt
Our proposed project will focus on the way that our internship organization, International Rescue Committee, has responded and adapted to the ongoing legislation restricting humanitarian aid projects and the entrance of refugees into the United States, as well as contrasting the systemic failures in government funding with the continued contributions from the local community to this project. Our poster will exhibit respect and preserve the dignity of others by articulating how the local IRC office continues to provide and support the refugees here in Spokane with aid from local charities, corporations, and individual funders. Furthermore, by exemplifying those who contribute and the local aid workers here in Spokane, our poster will affirm and value the worth of these individuals and the local refugee community. Finally, through comparison and analysis of government and executive orders since the start of the new administration, our poster will recognize how social systems in the United States influence the people not only within the country, but those who wish to immigrate here
Teaching Kids with ASD social communication skills
Children with disabilities often have deficits in engaging in appropriate social behavior such as greetings, conversations, and maintaining friendships. These deficits can result in individual isolation or result in the occurrence of problem behavior as an alternative to gain attention from peers. This poster will discuss a review of literature that has shown to be effective at teaching social skills to individuals with disabilities
Observing and Documenting Behavior in a Diverse Classroom – Strategies for objective and respectful observation
Children in classrooms may have deficits in academic and social skills as well as engage in inappropriate problematic behavior. One method of assisting students in classrooms is to observe student behavior and make informed decisions based on the observations to create effective and efficient interventions. This poster will review the literature and evaluate strategies for objective and respectful observation I the classroom. This poster will focus on how to best write objective documentation of events and behavior through a lens of cultural awareness and sensitivity.Children in classrooms may have deficits in academic and social skills as well as engage in inappropriate problematic behavior. Bluetooth-Enabled Self-Measured Blood Pressure to Control Hypertension
BackgroundHypertension is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease, contributing to26% of annual U.S. deaths. Unreliable office-based blood pressure (BP) measurements have spurred the adoption of self-measured BP (SMBP). However, only half of adults aged fifty to eighty with hypertension regularly monitor their BP and share BP measurements with healthcare providers. Bluetooth-enabled SMBP (BT-SMBP) is a potential solution to promote at-home monitoring and information sharing.
PurposeThe purpose of this project was to evaluate the use of BT-SMBP on the frequency of home BP measurement recording, timeliness of clinic response, and effect on BP, compared to SMBP using handwritten paper logs.
MethodsThis project was a program evaluation using retrospective chart review to collect and compare data for statistical analysis.
ResultsData from chart reviews of nine patients were analyzed to evaluate measurement frequency, clinic response times, and BP outcomes of both paper and BT logs. Descriptive statistics revealed the trend of improved BP across all patients with BT-SMBP, with notable differences in measurement frequency and clinic response times between the groups.
ConclusionControlling hypertension is crucial to improving health outcomes. SMBP is considered more accurate than in-office BP, and BT-SMBP offers accuracy and convenience by automatically logging BP measurements and facilitating sharing of BP logs with clinicians. Successfully implemented BT-SMBP programs require standardized workflows, adequate staff capacity, technological integration, and strong patient and clinician engagement
Effect of soil amended with biochar on growth dynamics of radishes
How do different percentages (15%, 10%, 5%, 0%) of biochar in soil affect the initial growth rate and final mass of radish plants (Raphanus sativus). We used 15%, 10%, 5% biochar, and using pure soil as our control group. For each soil type, we prepared 12 samples, totaling 48 samples across all conditions. After germination and initial plant growth, the number of leaves and the plant’s height from the top of the plant to the soil (in centimeters) were recorded every school day. The purpose of this study is to better understand if biochar is an effective way to stimulate plant growth in radish, producing healthier and faster-growing plants
Evaluating the Relocation of a Rural Hospital’s Helipad
BackgroundIsland Hospital, a 43-bed Level III Trauma and Stroke Center in rural northwest Washington, manages over 170 annual helicopter EMS landings from Airlift Northwest, Life Flight, and the U.S. Navy. Serving as a critical hub, it provides essential care for the San Juan Islands and surrounding Salish Sea communities.
PurposeThe purpose of this project was to evaluate the impact of relocating the helipad from the parking lot to the roof of the inpatient building on patient time to treat, safety, and staff workflow satisfaction. The previous helipad was located 360 feet opposite the ED entrance, while the new helipad is approximately 40 feet (with an elevator ride) above on the rooftop.
MethodsThe design was a program evaluation and policy creation scholarly project, utilizing the CDC Program Evaluation Model. Information was collected from the stakeholders to inform a new workplace policy, evaluate staff workflows and unit design, and share lessons learned. Qualitative and quantitative data was gathered from safety data, satisfaction surveys, and retrospect chart reviews.
Results/FindingsVariable analysis included descriptive statistics and two sample t-tests using pre- and post-relocation data. The mean prerelocation time to treat was 6.5 minutes, with post-relocation taking an average of 5 minutes. This 1.5-minute difference was not statistically significant (p = 0.06). Due to limited safety data a comparison was not conducted. Staff satisfaction surveys supported the new location’s workflow.
ConclusionsSimilar to other environmental care considerations, the strategic placement of a hospital helipad is crucial to optimizing staff workflow, satisfaction, safety, and overall patient care
