Challenges affecting SACCOs in the strategic planning process
While the field of strategic management has developed rapidly in recent past, no one has • investigated the slow response by Saccos to adopt the modem management framework that has widely been adopted by other players in the competition. Hence this research investigated on challenges facing Saccos in the strategic planning process. The study focused on 26 Saccos in Laikipia East District. The district had a total of 31 active Saccos.it was only 5 Saccos that had a strategic plan in place. The financial sector in which the Saccos operate had been going through rapid changes. This was due to various diverse reasons. First, changes in Government and fiscal policies encouraged banks to concentrate more on retail business. Secondly the MFIs were- licensed to do banking business under the recently enacted MFIs Act. Saccos too started to legally do banking under the new Saccos Act. Automation of services, continuous product development, research, customer focus, differentiation and downscaling of services by the main banks been responsive and strategic. For Saccos to be able to align themselves to the competition they require to undertake strategic planning and strategic decision making. The general objective of the study therefore was to access factors affecting Saccos in undertaking strategic planning. The research assessed the possibility of Saccos operating business like corporate bodies not only to match but also to outmaneuver the competition. In carrying out research, 260 respondents were studied. A sample of 130 was selected using stratified sampling method. The researcher. Used open ended and closed Questionnaires to gather data for a study that was both quantitative and qualitative. Inferential statistical methods were used to analyze and present data. Tables, charts and graphs were also used to present the data. It was concluded that the major challenges mat Saccos face in the process of strategic planning are lack of the necessary skills, non-participation by the lower management, poor organization structure, level of change management and the financial implications. With straining, these problems could be sorted out
Constraints to pension participation among informal sector workers.A survey of informal section workers in Nyeri County.
This study was carried out to establish constraints to pension participation by workers in the informal sectors. Some of the constraint discussed and analysed are awareness, attitude toward pension, pension products characteristic, saving attitude and pension policies. What other researchers have done in the area of pension was captured in the literature review which goes further to provide for researcher point of entry for adding to this knowledge area. The research was developed on life cycle model. The study utilized survey research design and the research target population was 2,686 informal sector workers in Nyeri County. The researcher obtained response from 241 respondent from a sample of 268 which was selected using simple stratified method which was drawn from each strata at random. Data was collected using questionnaire and has been analyzed by use of descriptive, inferential statistics and with use of SPSS. The research findings indicate that the pension• participation is too low among informal sector workers. The study concludes that pension participation is mainly constrained by lack of awareness on the pension, negative attitude toward pension, inadequate characteristic of pension products, absence of saving culture among the workers and pension policies that discourage the workers from joining pension schemes. Informal sector expects that the Government to be a major player in formulating appropriate policies that will encourage the workers to participate in pension and more so provide incentives to entice the workers to save for pension. The study also revealed that more awareness campaigns should be conducted to promote the knowledge on pension and create more understanding on the benefits of participating in pension. Pension service provider will also require to tailor their products to make them appealing to the informal sector. Pension policies will require to be reviewed to fit with the current reality

An Occupation-Based Framework for Changing Human Occupational Behavior to Address Critical Global Issues
p.402 - 417The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of the Modified Instrumentalism in Occupational Therapy (MIOT) in facilitating change in occupational choices and performance patterns to help address global issues of concern to humanity. Such issues include poverty, diseases, environmental destruction and climate change, overpopulation, corruption and institutional dysfunction. The MIOT is an occupation-based framework for individual empowerment which is based on the pragmatic notion that the mind (and ideas or intellectual activities of the mind, including scientific investigation) is an instrument to help humans shape the environment to ensure that it is suitable for their survival. The investigation was a mixed method embedded multiple-case study with an experimental-type pretest-posttest and naturalistic-type phenomenological designs. Three graduate occupational therapy students from a mid-western university in the USA participated in the study. Our findings indicated that participants' occupational choices and performance patterns changed after intervention guided using MIOT guidelines so that they engaged more frequently in occupations chat were likely to impact global issues positively. We concluded that the MIOT was a potentially useful tool that occupational therapists and scientists could use to guide meaningful occupation-¬based interventions to help ameliorate global issues of concern
A study conducted in publicteacher training colleges in Meru and Embu Counties Kenya
RA 643.8 .G5 2011Over the past 25 years, nearly 25 million people have died from AIDS in the world. In 2007, globally about one million people were living with HIV and AIDS and about 2.5 million people were newly infected with the virus. HIV causes debilitating illness and premature death in people during their prime years of life and devastated families and communities (UNAIDS, 2007). The purpose of the study was to establish the role of teacher trainees in the management of behavior change programs in preventing and protecting themselves against HIV and AIDS in three public primary teacher training colleges in Meru and Embu counties. The study involved 356 respondents (15 tutors and 341 teacher trainees). The researcher used questionnaires to collect data from tutors and teacher trainees. Stratified random sampling was used to get the sample size. The descriptive research design was used as it described the state of affairs as they were. A pilot study was carried out to help validate the research instruments. The data was tallied and frequencies got. Descriptive statistics such as percentages, means, graphs, and charts were used. The study found out that teacher trainees and tutors were aware and were involved in behavior change programs in place in colleges and social-cultural and religious factors affected the implementation of these programs. The study recommended that dark comers or pairing zone be lit and patrols made. The college administration to encourage tutors and trainees to be more involved in the management of behavior change programs and check on detrimental cultures. The research was conducted in an ethical manner so as to build, uphold trust and cooperation that was aimed at generating valid and reliabl
Factors affecting implementation of strategic plans in public University colleges in Kenya
It is said that planning is one thing while making the plans work is a different thing all together. Some plans though well thought out and researched never achieve the goals due to the fact that they were not put into effect. Various factors among them leadership have been blamed for this lack of implementation. This study was carried out to determine how this and other factors influence the implementation of strategic plans in public universities. The information was gathered by use of questionnaires in three of the University Colleges in Mt. Kenya region. From an accessible population of 107, respondents were selected by stratified sampling yielding a sample of 3 7 respondents. Once collected, the data was coded and analyzed using regression analysis and presented in graphs and charts. The research findings were that the plan has been implemented to a level of between 60 and 79%. Of the five factors suggested for study, three factors were found to play a significant role in plan implementation. Two of the factors i.e employee involvement and communication were found not to play a very significant role. It is hoped that the findings of this study will go a long way in contributing to the process of strategic planning and implementatio
A study of management and its effect on effective learning of autistic children in a special school and special units in Imenti North district.
ABSTRACT
Autism is a brain disorder that takes place during the first two and a half years of childhood. It is characterized by social disconnectedness, failure to recognize and read the subtleties of human communication behaviours and interactions, an obsessive addiction to routines and repeatable behaviours. According to recent estimates one in five autistic children have been excluded from school and many leave school with no formal qualifications. The purpose of the study was to investigate the effectiveness in the management of autistic children in a special primary school and 9 special units, and assisting making recommendations to improve the learning of autistic children. The study was carried out in two phases namely: The exploratory or pilot study and the main study. The study adopted descriptive survey the research derived a total sample of 90 respondents from a population of 450 using purposive and stratified random sampling. Four teachers and parents will be randomly selected from a special school and each special unit, and all the 10 head teachers to form a sample size of 90 respondent. In testing the validity of the research instrument the researcher applied content validity where the experts' opinions from Kenya Methodist University from the department of education validated the instruments. Kuder Richardson formula 20 was used to test the reliability of the research instruments which yielded a reliability value of 0.85. Data analysis was carried out using statistical package for social scientist (SPSS). The study established that 6 (15. 0%) of the teachers had a special training on autism while a significant majority 34 (85.0%) did not. Majority of the teachers 28 (70%) stated that teaching and learning materials were inadequate, therefore more resources are required. Two medical management services are offered where a significant majority 36 (90.0%) observe dieting and 4(10.0%) practice craniosacral therapy which is only carried out in the special school. Twenty one (52.5%) of the teachers use behavioral therapy as educational intervention, 2 (5.0%) practiced Packing and treatment education of autistic and related communication handicapped children (TEACCH) in each intervention. A significant majority of parents (79%) responded positively to the theme of love and acceptance. Many parents had this positive attitude towards their autistic children because the disability bill in the new constitution proposed that parents of disabled children will be paid monthly income for their maintenance by the government. The researcher• recommends the Ministry of Education to train more personnel to handle learners with autism and establish more autism schools, pre-vocational and vocational centers for learners with autism to acquire functional skills that are relevant for self reliance
Factors influencing development of financial derivatives markets. A survey of quoted companies in Kenya
HG 173.N3 2013The Kenyan economy is becoming more and more open with international trading constantly increasing and as a result Kenyan firms become more exposed to foreign exchange rate fluctuations. The relative price changes affect the firms' competitive market position, leading to changes in cash flows and ultimately, in firms value. While it was observed that firms used a variety of instruments to manage financial risks, it was not clear whether the full potential of those instruments was being realized since not all firms use derivatives and not all firms use all types and more important, whether they are used appropriately. Hence the study sought to investigate factors influencing development of financial derivatives market. The study sought to analyze the specific objectives item by item. It sought to establish how legal and regulatory frameworks affect development of financial derivatives market, how capacity building is crucial in the development of financial derivatives market, how operational efficiency impact on development of financial derivatives market and establish how financial market intermediaries play a role in development of financial derivatives market in Kenya. The study used a simple stratified sampling technique to sample out 56 respondents out of the population of 186. Data was collected through questionnaire, interview and secondary data. The questions were administered through drop and pick technique. The collected data was grouped and analyzed using descriptive statistics and presented in form of pie charts, tables, and. histograms. The study found out that the use of financial derivatives instruments by quoted companies in Kenya is mainly influenced by legal and regulatory framework, capacity building, operational efficiency and the role of financial market intermediaries. Hence the study concluded that there is need of building upon existing financial derivatives instruments so as to enhance efficiency and effectiveness in their use in Kenya as modem tools for financial risk management. The study further recommended that all stakeholders should address the factors that affect efficient use and development of financial derivatives in order for Kenya to be a strong investment destination
Contribution of free primary education to academic performance in primary school pupils, a case of Tigania West district, Kenya.
In Africa, a few countries like Malawi and Tanzania have implemented free primary education before Kenya. With mixed cases of success, problems and handicaps, some countries have challenged the policy on the grounds of quality, with Nigeria labeling universal primary education as the unfulfilled education promise. The study sought to assess the contribution of free primary education policy on pupil performance in public primary schools in Tigania West District. The Study adopted a descriptive research design. The study population consisted of all the head teachers, deputy head teachers and assistant teachers in 57 public primary schools in Tigania West District. The population consisted of 57 head teachers, 57 deputy head teacher and 270 assistant teachers. Hence, making the total population to be 384. The sample size included all 57 head teachers, all 57 deputy head teachers and a third of the total number of 270 assistant teachers. The total sample size was therefore, 204 subjects. The 90 assistant teachers were selected by use of proportionate random sampling. Data was collected by use of questionnaire. Secondary data was obtained from school documents such as school enrolment register, class performance results and KCPE results. Data was analyzed by use of descriptive statistics in form of frequencies and percentages. Chi-square was also used to test various hypotheses. Data was then presented in form of frequency tables, charts and bar graphs. The findings have shown that financial resources, teacher/ pupil ratio, teacher capacity and physical resources do not influence performance in Tigania West District public primary schools. Financial resources are inadequate; there is need to increase them, for pupil performance to improve. Teacher; pupil ratio is high leading to overcrowded classrooms. Most schools were understaffed and the teachers were overworked. Classes are overcrowded but most learning is taking place as a result of Constituency Development funds which have contributed to availability of more physical facilities. The researcher recommended to the Ministry of Education that it should make more funds available so that parents can be rescued from this burden. It was also recommended that research on KCPE performance trend analysis in Tigania West District needs to be done
