Education is a fundamental basic human right and an essential tool for achieving the goals of equality, development, national integration and peace. Education is also an investment in human skills. It is a determinant of earnings and therefore an important exit route from poverty. Investment in education helps to foster economic growth, enhance productivity, contribute to national and social development, and reduce social inequality. Adult education as a sub-sector of education currently attracts many learners aged eighteen years and above. These learners voluntarily or involuntarily enroll in literacy classes to acquire knowledge and skills to accomplish various goals in life. The high demand for adult literacy and subsequent retention of enrolled learners in the literacy classes until graduation in Imenti south sub-county is a phenomenon that needed urgent study since previous studies in adult education have mostly dwelt on causes of low participation and the impact of adult literacy to the communities. The purpose of this study was therefore to investigate why adult learners enrolled and persistently attended classes in ACE programmes in Imenti south sub-county. The objectives of the study were; to investigate the extent to which socio-economic background of learners, the availability of learning opportunities, the teacher-learner relationship and the learners' education goals influences enrolment and retention of adult learners in ACE programmes. The study adopted descriptive research design and simple random sampling. Research instruments were validated by subjects matter experts and pre-tested in Imenti North sub-county. Ethical issues were observed to ensure privacy anonymity of respondents. Data was analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). The study revealed that social economic factors like level of income, availability of learning opportunity, learners' educational goals and teacher-learner relationship are key ingredients for substantive enrolment and retention of learners in ACE programmes in Imenti South and the world over. These findings are relevant for the adult education sub-sector due to the renewed interest of adult learning in Imenti south sub-county and the country at large. Future scholars in the field of adult education as well as practicing education managers; may use the information to improve enrolment and retention rates in ACE programmes. The study recommends that the Government should dedicate more resources to adult education so that more learners can be enrolled in ACE programmes to reap the benefits of education. This will further improve the literacy level in the country

HF 5549 .S55 2015Employee retention is one major challenge facing many organizations today. Human Resource planning has become a concern because the ability to hold on to highly talented core employees can be crucial to future survival. This study examined the Influence of Human Resource Planning (HRP) on Employee Retention in North Imenti Hospitals, Meru County. In particular, the research identified core elements of Human Resource Planning which strongly influence employee retention. HRP is the ongoing process of systematic planning to achieve optimum use of an organization's most valuable asset - its human resources. The objective of human resource planning is to ensure the best fit between employees and jobs, while avoiding manpower shortages or surpluses. A descriptive research methodology was used and a survey approach to achieve the research objectives. The research utilized primary data collected through administration of questionnaires. A total of 62 respondents were engaged to answer questions from selected hospitals in North Imenti, Meru County and used for data analysis. Multiple logistic regression analysis was used to assess the relationship of all the variables. Important to note excluding the variables of the study HRP will leave the dependent variable employee retention negatively affected but insignificantly. Results from the study revealed that human resource planning has a significant influence on increasing the chances of retaining employees. In addition, the Multiple Logistic Regression model was found to be a significant predictor of employee retention showed that at least 30% of the variations in employee retention were explained by human resource planning as a whole. However, these results raise fundamental issues as to why each independent variable was insignificant as depicted by the hypothesis tests and yet the whole model was a significant predictor of employee retention. There is therefore room for further research by future researchers in this subject area. In the order of magnitude of influence despite all of them being insignificant, the independent variable with the highest influence was competency planning, followed by career planning, then succession planning and finally, contingency planning. lt is also important to note that contingency planning and career management decreased the probability of employee retention while competency planning and succession planning increased the probability of employee retention

HG 3754.5 .M83 2015This study sought to investigate the factors influencing group based lending in Kenya with a special emphasis on Nanyuki town. The study focused on the lenders perspective as opposed to the borrower's perspective. Group based lending has been used the world over for economic empowerment for the poor who lack formal collateral to obtain credit. The main objectives for the study were to test the target market, the economies of scale, the group type or the group cohesiveness and the bank policy as some of the factors influencing group based lending The information or literature on groups was gathered from secondary sources and the primary sources. The theoretical review features various theories about groups and some of the unique group behaviours that contribute to group lending. The theoretical framework follows with details of group features that relate positively to the specific objectives of the study. The empirical review analyses each theory's applicability in group lending. The joint liability theory which identifies group lending as a non-conventional lending technology features prominently. Additionally, the conceptual framework has been constructed to show the dependent variable and the independent variables. The dependent variables are backed by the operational framework which appears in a separate chart. The cperational framework gives an illustration of how the independent variables were measured by the parameters to support the study hypothesis. In chapter three, a descriptive research design was used and a non-probability sample design. ln that respect, a purposive sampling• method was used to collect data. Purposive sampling method uses selective or judgmental techniques to construct a sample. The target population was 72 while the sample size of 30 composed of the credit manager mid two credit officers was selected as respondents. Two credit officers and a manager were selected from 10 organizations that use groups for lending including three others from govemment programs. Questionmires were used owing to their relative ease as opposed to other data collecting methods. The questiounaires were constructed on the Likert Scale seeking the respondents level of agreement from, I strongly disagree to r strongly agree. The data was presented on tables, graphs and figures before analysis using descriptive statistics, with the help of the Statistical Program for Social Sciences (SPSS). Finally, a summary, recommendations and conclusions of the research were made. There are suggestions for further research based on the noted research gaps

The study was guided by the Feminist theory which recognizes the pervasive influence of gender divisions on social life. The study employed descriptive survey design. Sample size of 76 out of a population of 254 church members was selected through simple random sampling. The study used test-re-test method to determine the validity and reliability of the instrument. The data collected was analyzed using qualitative and quantitative techniques with the help of Statistical Packages for Social Sciences (SPSS). The data was presented by use of percentages and frequencies. The findings of the study indicated that factors such as gender stereotyping, family responsibilities, lack of interest in management positions and low levels of the implementation of affirmative action adversely influence lack active participation of women in church management in Ekerenyo ELCK in Nyamira County. It was therefore concluded that unless such factors are looked into and corrected appropriately, the number of women actively participating in church leadership in Ekerenyo Parish will remain low compared to that of their male counterparts. The following recommendations were done in order to remedy the situation. Churches should encourage women to participate in church leadership position. The churches should review church doctrines, policies and practices that hinder or discourage women from participating in church leadership. The churches should come up with more affirmative action policies at the church and ensure that they are implemented in order to correct gender imbalance and to guarantee women opportunities for participation in church leadership positions and policy making. It was believed that once the recommendation have been put in place as expected then this may attract more women in church leadership in Ekerenyo ELCK parish in Nyamira County

HG 1708.7 .M88 2015Since the launch of M-Pesa by Safaricom service provider, Mobile banking became a reality in Kenya. The service enables subscribers to use their mobile phones to carry out transactions such as pay for goods and services, pay bills, send to and receive money from friends and family, withdraw cash for their use, top up their own airtime account or top up someone else's account and manage their own accounts. M-Pesa too paved the way for other network service providers to offer mobile- banking services such as Airtel money, Yu cash and orange money which also offer the same services as M-Pesa. However, there is laxity among women entrepreneurs in the adoption of mobile banking services in that they prefer cash transactions to e-cash payments in their day to day transactions. Against the backdrop of this laxity, the following factors were analyzed: social cultural practices, security, ease of accessibility, low .costs of transactions and finally the support from the network service providers. The study applied the Theory of Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) to help predict factors affecting the usage of mobile banking services among women banana traders. The research survey was carried out around three major banana trading centers in Meru central within Meru County. This banana trading centers were selected from an array of many but preferred due to their proximity and accessibility. They were Kariene, Miruriri and Mwichiune. It was assumed also that the women banana traders at these centers were likely to be using mobile phone banking services. The research design was a descriptive survey that was conducted through administration of questionnaires. Primary data was collected using closed ended questionnaires. The total population of the research survey was 200 respondents which comprised women banana traders in the three banana trading spots. Convenient sampling was used to select respondents from the three banana trading spots. An estimated 25% of the total population was selected at each banana trading spot to arrive at the sample size of 50 respondents around banana market spots in Meru central. Descriptive statistics was used to analyze data aided by SPSS (version 20) using Multiple Logistic Regression model to link the relationship between the independent and dependent variables and to test the hypothesis at 5% significance level. Analyzes of the data revealed that social cultural practices of the money transfer technology enshrined in family ties, remittances and informal groups plus its accessibility, cost; support and security factors are related to behavioral intention to use and actual usage of the mobile banking services by the women banana traders. The research findings helped add to the scanty literature on usage of mobile phone banking services and recommended that further research be undertaken to investigate the impact of the actual usage of the mobile phone banking services on the growth and success of the business

NP is an integral part of all hospital nursing service provision process that seeks to ensure patients are safely and adequately treated during hospitalization period. On implementation, NP is faced with different challenges due to the dynamism of the health sector that is heavily influenced by staffing practices, technological advancement, high demand for medical services and different policies and strategies that are used to govern the health sector. The study is aimed at evaluating factors influencing implementation of NP among nurses working at Tenwek Hospital, Bomet County, in Kenya. This was a cross sectional descriptive study which is both qualitative and quantitative in nature. The estimated sample population of 98 nurses drawn from the hospital's stratified departments was expected to fill out a structured self-administered questionnaire with adequate observation of research ethics. 89 nurses gave their response. Data was analyzed with the use of Statistical package for social sciences (SPSS) version 20 and results were presented in tables, graphs, charts, narratives and themes which gives an at-a-glance impression of the research findings. Results showed Majority of respondents agreed that the working environment promotes the implementation of NP but do not initiate NP for every admitted patient due to nurse-patient ratio of 1>9. They also agreed that technology used in monitoring NP is available but they did not carry out all steps of NP. Majority recommended hiring of more nurse to meet the demand for nurses to carry out NP for every admitted patient at Tenwek Hospital. Therefore the findings of the study indicated that low nurse patient ratio is perceived to contribute to impartial implementation of NP at Tenwek Hospital. Based on the study revelations and implications, recommendation to policy makers and other authorities that a similar study can be adopted specifically on perceived nurse patient ratio and workload

Training of health workforce is an important element in ensuring delivery of quality health care services. New options for the education and in-service training of health care workers are required to ensure effective preparation and to meet a country's needs. Nursing education in Kenya has faced challenges of shortage of qualified clinical faculty. Over the past five years, there has been a tremendous expansion in nursing education with the colleges offering nursing education and the number of students rapidly increasing. The rapid expansion in nursing education has not been complimented with concurrent increase in the facilities nor the number of available clinical nursing lecturers. This has raised concerns on the effects of faculty shortage on the quality of clinical teaching for pre-service nursing education and ultimately nursing practice. The aim of this study was to assess factors affecting clinical teaching for pre-services nursing education in KMTC, Nairobi Campus. Specific objectives included: to determine the capacity of nurse tutors in clinical teaching for pre-service nursing education, establish the institutional factors affecting clinical teaching for pre-service nursing programme and investigate the quality of clinical teaching methods employed in the pre-service nursing education. Cross-sectonal descriptive study design was adopted. The sample size was 132 comprising of 5 nurse tutors, 7 clinical instructors, 20 nurses and 100 student nurses. Purposive sampling was used to sample the student nurses, while census was used to sample nurse tutors from KMTC, Nairobi campus. Self-administered questionnaire, interviews and record reviews were used for data collection. Data analysis was done using SPSS. The study findings show that majority 23 (72%) of nurse educators were diploma holders and most 25 (78.1%) didn't have any additional training besides the basic nursing education. Most 12 (37.5%) of nurse educators have 2-4 years of experience as nurses or clinical intructors. The numbers of nurse educators were generally low with a nurse instructor to student ratio of 1:10 in placement facilities. 125 (95%) of all respondents agreed that demonstration was the most preferred teaching method for clinical instruction. In addition, 125 (95%) respondents said that experience had the most influence on clinical training. 115(85%) felt that generally health facilities were not adequately prepared to support clinical teaching for pre-service nursing education. The study recommends that: KMTC should enforce policies that ensure nurse tutors have adequate academic qualifications and experience, which correspond to clinical teaching for nursing education; KMTC should work with trainees' health facilities placement, to ensure that there are adequate facilities to support effective clinical training for pre-services nursing education in Kenya; KMTC should review it pre-service nursing curriculum to ensure that it responds to contemporary issues in the nursing professional and KMTC should organize regular on job trainings to update nurse tutors on curriculum contents as well as teaching methods, with an emphasis on clinical skills training. Key words: Clinical training, pre-service, nursing education, Kenya Medical Training College, Kenya
