Cape Town’s Stormwater Ponds: investigating the amenity that they provide
Stormwater ponds are frequently used in urban drainage systems to attenuate flood peaks. However, they additionally have the potential to provide amenities for surrounding communities in lines with current Sustainable Drainage System (SuDS) practice. Currently, the City of Cape Town is unaware if, or to what extent, amenity is being provided by their stormwater ponds. Thus, in order to enable insight to this problem, 77 of the 737 located stormwater ponds within Cape Town were individually investigated, i.e. an approximately 10% sample. The ponds included in this 10% sample were chosen based on a variety of characteristics aimed to create a fair reflection of all ponds in Cape Town. Approximately 51% of the investigated ponds were found to have incorporated desirable facilities in addition to their flood control abilities. Unfortunately, litter was found to plague many stormwater ponds, often severely in the less affluent areas of the City. Consequently, this contributed to 51% of the investigated ponds having a low aesthetic value. Thus, many of the ponds in Cape Town do currently provide some amenity yet it could be significantly improved by implementing more innovative SuDS design strategies

Eutectic Freeze Crystallization process for the treatment of ternary textile wastewater concentrates
Textile wastewaters contain high levels of sodium chloride (NaCl) and sulphate (Na2SO4) salts. Conventional water treatment uses evaporative crystallization (EC) which is an energy intensive process and is only effective in recovering pure water and a mixed sulphate-chloride salt. The mixed salt is contaminated with hardness and colour and cannot be recycled within the plant. This research investigates the technical applicability of using Eutectic Freeze Crystallization (EFC) in the recovery of water (as ice) and Na2SO4 salt. The effect of varying the operating temperature on the recovery and the purity of the ice and the salt was investigated using a synthetic textile wastewater stream containing 1.4 wt% Na2SO4 and 4.5 wt% NaCl. Thermodynamic modelling software predicted that the nucleation temperature of ice and Na2SO4 to be -3.1 oC and for NaCl, -21.6 oC. The recovery of ice was predicted to be 49% and 79% for Na2SO4.10H2O at -6.5 oC. Experimental validation, limited to operating temperatures above -7oC, showed a cumulative recovery of 42 % of ice with 94 % purity and 51.3 % recovery with 98 % purity for Na2SO4.10H2O at -6.5 oC. Sulphate analysis of the residual mother liquor at this temperature showed that 8.6 g of Na2SO4.10H2O was entrapped within ice crystals, thus reducing the recovery of Na2SO4.10H2O and the purity of ice. EFC is technically applicable for the recovery of ice and a single salt in a ternary system, however separation of the two phases is problematic due to high ice formation. The stream should first be treated with multistage Reverse Osmosis before EFC, so as to concentrate the stream and reduce ice formation
"No ears allowed?" An Anthropological Exploration of the International Symbol of Deafness
Symbols shape how social actors experience, feel and make meaning of their everyday life and social interactions. When we see a symbol, our brain processes it and denotes its meaning. Some symbols have obvious and clear meaning; others are vague, unclear and ambiguous. In this paper, I interrogate the international symbol of deafness / hard of hearing. On one level, the international symbol of deafness/hard of hearing acts as a key summarising symbol. Here it intends to represent the deaf community. However, through interviews with the Deaf community, their friends, parents, interpreters and CODA (Children of Deaf Adults) I show that the symbol operates more as an elaborating symbol, by fitting complex and possibly indistinguishable beliefs, practices, concepts and emotions into a workable framework.
