Report on the Spring LepiBASH for LepiMAP, 15 - 23 October 2016
Get PDFLepiMAP is the Atlas of African Lepidoptera. It is the continuation of the project known as SABCA (Southern African Butterfly Conservation Assessment). LepiMAP extends the taxonomy to both butterflies and moths, and extends the area under consideration to Africa. The LepiMAP project has held LepiBASH events twice a year, over a nine-day period from a Saturday to the following Sunday, during the southern autumn and spring. The 2016 Spring LepiBASH ran from Saturday, 15 October to Sunday, 23 October. During the nine days of the Spring LepiBASH, a total of 85 observers participated and a total of 2080 records were submitted, from 13 countries in Africa, including the first records from Senegal. 295 taxa have been identified

Growth and development of nestlings: Sabota Lark Calendulauda sabota
Get PDFKnowledge of the growth and development of nestlings has widespread application in fundamental and applied ornithology. Unfortunately detailed information on species-specific growth and plumage development patterns is lacking for most species. Here we present the results of a study on growth in selected mass and biometric parameters as well as plumage development based on data collected from 20 Sabota Lark Calendulauda sabota nestlings. The results revealed extremely rapid growth of the tarsus which is an adaptive strategy allowing nestlings to fledge at an early age and hence reduce the likelihood of a predator depredating the entire brood. There was also interesting variation in the presence or absence of down on the ventral surface and the position, size and number of tongue spots. This study provided a foundation for future comparative studies on avian life history strategies in larks
