Longevity records of southern African weavers
Get PDFThis paper presents longevity records for all southern African weavers, based on the SAFRING database, as in August 2016. The greatest elapsed time for a southern Africa weaver is 15 years 4 months 15 days for a Southern Masked Weaver Ploceus velatus. Twelve southern African weaver species have longevity records over 10 years. The rest of the weaver species can be expected to achieve recorded longevities of more than 10 years with sufficient ringing effort

Get PDFAn almost totally leucistic Cape Glossy Starling was observed by the authors (Fig. 1-3), also in the Kalahari, more precisely at the Twee Rivieren Rest Camp in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, South Africa. The bird, among other members of the flock, was present around No. 10 bungalow and it was quite tolerant to humans. The first sighting took place on 24 September 2016 and we saw it again on 25 September, the day we left. It appears to be resident there

Get PDFThe impacts of fire mortality on invertebrates have not been studied directly. More often, community level changes in response to differing burning regimes are usually studied. Indirect fire effects from habitat modification such as a decrease in cover or reduced prey availability are considered to pose a greater threat to such species than the direct effect of fire. In this paper, fire was shown to have a negative impact on ground dwelling spider taxa within South African grassland habitats. Fire related mortality in baboon spiders has not been reported in the literature
