A review of the "tea cup effect" and removal of suspended solids from water.
Suspended solids problem in water is an issue as old as water treatment itself.
Suspended solids can be causative to eroding through abrasion of impellers, pump casings, pipes and other water works related appurtenances. It is therefore appropriate that suspended solids must be removed as early as possible in the water works treatment facilities. It is usually done at the river/lake intakes to reduce the coarse particulate matter that would otherwise
adversely affect the water works thereafter.
The fine particles that will escape the entrapment at the intake works would
therefore require further and more effective system that would remove this fraction. By and large this removal process is achieved by chemically aided process such as coagulation/flocculation unit operation. This process is expensive and demands high level trained personnel to man them. In the
same vein then a simple and effective system is proposed. This is a swirl or grit removal system that does not need any chemicals, moving parts or even highly trained personnel to operate them. This paper is looking at the theory of the “Tea Cup Effect” and how it has been used in practice to remove or reduce suspended solids from water. The paper gives some examples where
such devices have been used and how effective they have been
A statistical analysis of the macroeconomic performance of three selected SADC countries.
The purpose of the study was to investigate and analyse the economic performances of three SADC countries, Botswana, Namibia and Zambia before and after the signing of the MoU on Macroeconomic Convergence during the period of 1990 and 2007. Four macroeconomic indicators namely, budget deficit as a percentage of GDP, current account balance as a % of GDP, real exchange rate and external debt as a % of GDP were used. Using regression analysis techniques, the study found that there was fair favourable economic performance by Botswana and Namibia during 1990 and 2007. Zambia on the other hand had an unfavourable economic performance from 1990 until late 2002. From the estimate results, the study further concluded that the variables in most instances were useful for monitoring regional integration and determining the country‟s macroeconomic performance. Each country had a different variable that determined its economic performance better than the other did. Policies put in place to ensure that the set targets are being achieved are not as efficient yet as the impact of the MoU and its policies are yet to be felt. The study concluded by recommending that more research be done on all the indicators to allow policy implementers to recognise what the main focus should be in achieving regional integration and other SADC objectives. The researchers also recommended that more emphasis should also be placed on mobilising resources that would lead to the achievement of the regional bloc set targets

Re-defining the rural space in the Kuiseb Delta: Examining the potential tourism benefits for the Topnaars in Namibia
The purpose of the study was to redefine the rural space and explore the potential tourism benefits for the Topnaars in the Kuiseb Delta. Kuiseb Delta has unparalleled archeological/historical sites of which 235 have been well researched. The historical sites are being threatened by unauthorized tourism and recreational activities. The Ministry of Environment and Tourism proclaimed community concessions recently which hold out hope for the Topnaar and other communities’ future to benefit from tourism. Topnaars are marginalized and are increasingly dispersing into adjacent towns or mines. The study utilised a naturalistic inquiry which is based on an illuminative approach. This involved the use of focus group interviews with participants in the tourism industry and a key informant technique with the Topnaar community. The method followed was important as it enabled the researchers to understand the principles underpinning potential community benefits and the industry’s role in tourism development in the Kuiseb Delta. The study unearthed that the proposed tourism activities are ideally located and offer unique tourism opportunities for the Topnaars. The proposed tourism products appeals to a growing market segment and could be marketed through binding market agreements with chosen partners. In addition, the project could be viable and could be operated at marginal cash. The study recommends the granting of a concession to the Topnaar community, the proclamation of the area as a ‘conservation area’ in terms of the ‘heritage act’, development of a management plan and an environmental impact assessment, attracting private sector partnership and providing of appropriate training for tour guides. The study further recommends continued archeological survey and documentation of additional cultural/archeological sites
Is Namibia's inflation import-driven? An econometric investigation.
The principal objective of this study was to investigate and test the hypothesis that Namibia’s inflation is mainly driven by imports using annual macroeconomic data. The study relied heavily on the Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) estimation technique. The study confirmed the results of previous studies (which used different methodologies from the current study) that inflation in Namibia is heavily import driven. The other variables that were found significant in explaining inflation in Namibia are rate of growth of GDP, broad money supply (M2), real interest rates and the real exchange rate. The main conclusion that we came to is that Namibia needs to put more emphasis in developing its manufacturing base which would ensure increased domestically produced output and less imported inflation from South Africa and the rest of the world

Demonstration of a cultural indigenous knowledge transfer prototype

We demonstrate the process of developing and evaluating the prototype. We show how our prototype might combat a cultural
gap between youths and elders and also hope to ignite ideas about how such a system can be used rurally and how further testing can be optimized to avoid a cultural gap in the test methods
An attempt to merge local and technological paradigms in the digital representation of indigenous knowledge.

Thus either substantial modifications are necessary in adapting technology to the requirements of indigenous knowledge systems or those systems are inadequately represented through technologies. This paper explores different options of organising video recorded indigenous knowledge in the pursuit of maintaining local communication patterns and practices. The evolutionary design of our indigenous knowledge management system is informed by a series of interactions and prototype evaluations with a pilot community in Eastern Namibia
