Financial sector development and economic growth nexus in South Africa
No full textThe study investigated the nexus between financial sector
development and economic growth in South Africa using cointegration and
error correction modelling and; the Granger causality tests. The results of the
study show that economic growth is explained by the financial sector variables
and control variables such as inflation, exchange rate, and real interest rates.
The Granger causality test results show that there is generally a bidirectional
relationship between economic growth and financial sector development which
implies that if the economy grows the financial services sector also grows and
vice versa
Tentative transition to market communications: Early television advertising in Kazakhstan.
No full textWhile there has been considerable growth of commercial media such as in local, national and regional television in Kazakhstan, the reality is still one of oligopolistic competition with much political intervention.
Utilising personal interviews with and secondary data from ad agencies, market research firms and mediaowners, this paper maps the early history and development of television and advertising industries in this
Central Asian state. This research suggests that the tentative practice of advertising in this transitional economy resembles that of developing countries rather than emulation of the developed models upheld.
Yet its challenges with account handling, media buying and creative services in Kazakhstan might hold lessons for other newcomers to the capitalist production system in its region. The author argues further that its practitioners and policy-makers could learn from the historic experience of developing, emergent and transitional economies worldwide

No full textPaper presented at the Conference on Entrepreneurs and Innovation in Africa, Pretoria, South AfricaA well-written business plan is increasingly becoming a key requirement for obtaining loans from financial institutions on the part of entrepreneurs. In the light of this, the paper attempts to highlight critical issues in the process of designing, developing and preparing an acceptable business plan. Specifically, issues such as the alternative uses of a business plan, users of a business plan, the main ingredients embedded in a business plan amongst others are discussed. The paper maintains that the success of a business operation will critically depend on the nature of its business plan. Consequently, It is envisaged that knowledge gained from this paper would in turn sharpen the skills of potential entrepreneurs in various ways
Literature and the teaching of stylistics: An investigation into the pragmatics of community formation in the educational context of Namibia.
No full textThe author’s paper is an attempt to investigate the success of the pedagogy of stylistics and pedagogical stylistics in
the Namibian context. As an applied linguistics course, stylistics is eminently suitable for study and analysis of
literature, because it clearly explicates literary effects through linguistic analysis. Many scholars have illustrated the
use of stylistics analysis for the purposes of studying literature and teaching it, which is, pedagogical stylistics.
However, this paper combines both the study of Stylistics as a discipline, which is the pedagogy of Stylistics, and the use of stylistics for teaching literature in general and poetry in particular. Namibia adopted English as its official language 22 years ago. Since then, both teachers and students have been struggling with the analysis of poetry. This study is an empirical one using qualitative methods in the author’s research to determine the impact of the study of Stylistics on the understanding and teaching of literature in Namibia. The author uses traditional British poetry from the 16th century up to the 20th century alongside postcolonial poetry to assess the importance of culture in
understanding poetry and examine the advantage of using stylistics to teach the poems that the author selects.

A SWOT analysis of the Department of Communication courses: A case of English for Academic Purposes (EAP) and English for Professional Purposes (EPP).
No full textThis study attempts a SWOT analysis of the higher level English Communication courses offered by the Department of Communication at the NUST (Communication Skills, Professional Writing and Professional Communication), in order to probe the current situation and use the findings to argue a case for English for Academic Purposes (EAP) and English for Professional Purposes (EPP) as alternative higher level courses. The study aims at carving a niche for an English curriculum that meets the demands made upon the learners by target situations. Therefore, the problem that this study seeks to address is that whereas learners face a heterogeneous target situation characterised by varieties of English, (English foe Specific Academic Purposes (ESAP), English for Specific Business Purposes (ESBP), English for Legal Purposes (ELP), English for Medical Purposes (EMP), English for Economics (EE) and English for Science and Technology (EST), as the case may be, (Dudley - Evans and St. John, 1998), the higher level courses expose students to mainly a generalised English curriculum which, by and large, does not fully address the requirements of the target situation. Findings from the study are aimed at bolstering efforts to implement an ESP curriculum that meets the expectation of learners as is demanded by the target situation. The study employs a descriptive analysis of data within the qualitative research paradigm
