An automated simulation environment for heat demand and supply scenarios of city quarters, tested at the example of Mainz, Germany
The urban simulation platform SimStadt calculates heating demand for city quarters or whole cities based on 3D building information data. In this study, SimStadt’s capabilities to dimension centralized and decentralized heat supply options are extended and tested for a city quarter of 65 buildings in Mainz, Germany. A biomass-fired boiler with an oil-fired backup boiler and a heating network is compared against a decentralized solution based on air-water heat pumps along technical and economic indicators. Furthermore, heating demand simulation results are validated against measured data and show differences of as little as 4%, while simulated and measured heat generation for the biomass supply option deviate by 5% only
Uncertainty of structure-borne sound source quantities and the installed power from interlaboratory test results according to EN 15657
Structure-borne sound sources affect the acoustic quality inside buildings. Based on many years of research, methods have been standardised to characterise structure-borne sound sources in the laboratory (EN 15657) and to predict the sound transmission from these sources when installed in buildings (EN 12354-5). This contribution is about the uncertainty of the source descriptors used in EN 15657 and the predicted installed sound power which is the input quantity for EN 12354-5.Recently an interlaboratory test with 7 participating laboratories has been performed. The task was to measure the blocked force, free velocity and mobility of an artificial source and the blocked force of the ISO tapping machine. From the evaluation of the measurement results estimates for the uncertainties of the source quantities and the installed power could be deduced
Aligning Technic with Didactic – A Remote Laboratory Infrastructure for Study, Teaching and Research
The project Open Digital Lab for You (DigiLab4U) focuses on the creation of a net-worked laboratory-based learning environment where students, teachers and researchers can access industry related laboratory equipment focusing on the Internet of Things (IoT) and Industry 4.0 (I4.0). This paper describes the alignment of the didactical requirements with the technical design and architecture to build up a sustainable remote laboratory system for study, teaching and research. The focus is on the development of a dashboard and corresponding technical integration for remote access of an RFID measuring chamber. The remote chamber will be used in the Information Logistics study program at the Hochschule für Technik Stuttgart (HFT Stuttgart) as part of laboratory exercises and will be available to other users across universities in the future. Subsequently the initial project idea is briefly described (1), technical design according to the didactical demands are outlined (2, 3) and first evaluation results will be presented (4)
Prof. Ackermann, vision-based navigation and the PG master’s degree programme at HfT Stuttgart
The two topics of the article seem to have absolutely nothing to do with each other and, as can be expected in a contribution in honor and memory of Prof. Fritz Ackermann, they are linked in his person. Vision-based Navigation was the focus of the doctoral thesis written by the author, the 29th and last PhD thesis supervised by Prof. Ackermann. The International Master’s Program Photogrammetry and Geoinformatics, which the author established with colleagues at Stuttgart University of Applied Sciences (HfT Stuttgart) in 1999, was a consequence of Prof. Ackermann’s benevolent promotion of international knowledge transfer in teaching. Both topics are reflected in this article; they provide further splashes of color in Prof. Ackermann’s oeuvre
The German Cement Industry as a CO2 Source for Other Industries
Cement production is responsible for about eight percent of global CO2 emissions. A potential use for CO2 is the production of synthetic fuels through power-to-X (PtX) processes. For this purpose, a potential analysis is performed in which the possibilities for CO2 avoidance and CO2 capture and utilization (CCU) in the cement manufacturing process are evaluated. Based on the potential analysis, three scenarios for the development of the German cement industry until 2050 are developed and displayed in geo-referenced form, yielding potential locations for PtX plants. Results show that it is unlikely that cement can be fully replaced by alternative construction methods or new types of binders from today’s perspective. Measures to reduce CO2 emissions in cement production are limited, especially due to the restricted possibilities to replace limestone as feedstock. In an intermediate scenario, CO2 emissions in cement production decrease by 35% until 2050 compared to the average value from the 2014–2018 reference period. For CCU to be introduced at cement plants, the additional costs must be compensated, either through revenues from CO2 certificates or economic and regulatory incentives
Digitalization of an Indoor-Positioning Lab Using a Mobile Robot and IIoT Integration
Industry 4.0, the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) as well as Smart Logistics depend on locating mobile assets. In contrast to outdoor locating, GPS is not reliable for indoor positioning. Instead, different real-time locating systems (RTLS) are used in industries for indoor locating when there is no chance of obtaining GPS-satellite signals. Students in engineering disciplines should know about the chances offered by and the limits of RTLS, for example through corresponding lab experiments. However, measuring the accuracy of RTLS is a time-consuming task. Our goal is to provide a remote RTLS-accuracy measurement experiment by digitalizing and automating the whole process.
This paper discusses adding remote experiment service to this lab, thus providing access to the lab infrastructure anytime and anywhere. A mobile robot was used to move an ultra-wideband (UWB) transponder and expose it to the RTLS measurement infrastructure. By optimizing the routing algorithm of a mobile robot, the required accuracy and appropriate safety features were justified and the accuracy of the robot reached 2 cm. It also passed all the static and dynamic obstacles with acceptable safety thanks to inbuilt sensors. The remote operation was also done in an IoT environment by implementing the MQTT data transfer protocol. For remote users to be able to operate our RTLS system via MQTT, we developed a software program. When running this program, our DigiLab4U Laboratory Management System (LabMS) is able to send commands to the RTLS system and receive positioning measurements of a mobile object (in our case RTLS tag) via MQTT messages. Thus, the real route and the measured route can be compared and the difference can be analyzed by students remotely
Positioning of Pedelecs for a Pedelec Sharing System with Free-Floating Bikes
For intelligent mobility concepts in growing urban environments, positioning of transportation vehicles and generally moving objects is a fundamental prerequisite. Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) are commonly used for this purpose, but especially in urban environments under certain conditions, they offer limited accuracy due to buildings, tunnels, etc. that can deviate or mask the satellite signals. The use of existing built-in sensors of the vehicle and the installation of additional sensors can be utilized to describe the movement of the vehicle independently of GNSS. This conforms to the concept of dead reckoning (DR). Both systems (GNSS and DR) can be integrated and prepared to work together since they compensate their respective weaknesses efficiently. In this study, a method to integrate different inertial sensors (gyroscope and accelerometer) and GNSS is investigated. Pedelecs usually do not have many inbuilt additional sensors like it is the case in cars; therefore, additional low-cost sensors have to be used. An extended Kalman filter (EKF) is the base of calculations to perform data integration. Driving tests are realized to check the performance of the integration model. The results show that positioning in situations where GNSS data is not available can be done through dead reckoning for a short period of time. The weak point hereby is the calibration of the accelerometer. Inaccurate accelerometer data cause increasing inaccuracy of the position due to the double integration of the acceleration over time
