The importance of qualification of the human resources in tourism: a study applied to travel agents in Portuga

    No full text
Tourism has established itself as one of the most important and fastest growing economic sectors in the world. The success of this economic activity depends heavily on qualified human resources. In the case of travel agencies and tourism, travel agents are the pillar of all the dynamics of this subsector. In the absence of many specific studies on these professionals and their levels of qualification and job satisfaction, this article aims to define a profile of the travel agent in Portugal, by dividing it into four elements: socio‑demographic, professional, economic and psychological and also to understand the influence of the level of qualification. A descriptive quantitative methodology with univariate and bivariate analysis was applied using primary data collection, based on the questionnaire survey of a significant number of travel agents operating in Portugal, representative of the national territorial density. The empirical results of this study allowed the general conclusion that the vast majority of travel agents have higher education qualifications with incidence in the area. Travel agents with more years of profession tend to earn better wages, although agents in higher age brackets show lower educational qualifications. However, it is not because travel agents have more education that they will get better pay; such as travel agents with a degree in tourism feel less satisfied with their profession, this correlates with inappropriate pay and high levels of stress

What is the effect of emotional processing on depression? A longitudinal study

    No full text
Emotional processing is an empirically established predictor of pre-post therapy improvement in depression. However, its relationship to symptom alleviation over time requires clarification. To clarify the contribution of emotional processing to gradual symptom improvement, we explored both (1) the effect of emotional processing on pre-post therapy changes in depressive symptoms (final outcome) and (2) its association with the intensity of clinical symptoms across sessions (session-by-session outcome). These relationships were estimated in a sample of 50 depressed clients treated with cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) or emotion-focused therapy (EFT). Emotional processing was measured by the Experiencing Scale during Emotion Episodes in five sessions taken across therapy. As expected, we found that a greater increase in emotional processing during treatment predicted a greater pre-post therapy improvement in depressive symptoms. Higher levels of emotional processing predicted next-session lower intensity on clinical symptoms, but the intensity of symptoms contributed to explaining the subsequent level of emotional processing achieved. Our observations suggest that clients' capabilities to process their emotions may both facilitate and be promoted by gradual improvement in symptoms. These results suggest the reciprocal predictive influence of emotional processing and symptoms on the therapeutic change in depression.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Flexibility between immersion and distancing: A dynamic pattern with effect on depressive symptoms

    No full text
Objective: Recent studies on immersion (first-person perspective) and distancing (third-person perspective) in psychotherapy have shown the potential of both perspectives in the treatment of depression. High levels of change were associated with transitions between immersion and distancing, suggesting that a dynamic pattern between them may result in a more adaptive view of reality. This study aimed to assess if higher flexibility between these perspectives, during clientś reflection on negative experiences in the intermediate phase, is associated with lower levels of depressive symptoms at the end of treatment. Method: We analyzed the flexibility through frequency and magnitude of transitions between immersion and distancing, in representative sessions of the intermediate phase of therapy in 17 cases with depression. Results: The results showed that the higher frequency and lower magnitude in the intermediate phase predicted lower levels of depressive symptoms at the end of treatment. Conclusion: Immersion and distancing seem to work as dynamic processes, and greater flexibility between them in intermediate phase of therapy, characterized by frequent and fast transitions between the two perspectives, may be an adaptive pattern due to its effect on post treatment depressive symptoms.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
