Decentralized electricity storage evaluation in the Portuguese context

    No full text
Portugal has made great progress in implementing renewable energy systems (RES) to use its endogenous renewable resources. As the cost of renewable energy generation is decreasing, mainly for photovoltaic energy, a significant increase in its production is expected, in particular at the local and domestic levels. Yet, much investment and development is still needed to fulfil the goals for renewable energy generation defined by the Portuguese government and the European Union, in order to decarbonize energy generation and reduce energy dependence. Besides limitations in the installed capacity, the full potential of existing and future RES is not fulfilled, mainly due to imbalances in supply and demand, resulting from the varying climatic conditions and limited energy storage capacity. Although some investment was made in large scale Energy Storage Systems (ESS), especially pumped hydro, distributed energy storage (DES), in particular for stationary domestic storage appliances, have received little attention from decision makers. When properly defined, designed and implemented, they can contribute to increase the efficiency of existing and future RES and the capacity factor. Thus, in this work the questions regarding the implementation of DES are analysed. The main criteria that have to be considered when selecting the proper storage technology for DES are defined, taking into account information and data from current legislation and/or strategic plans and goals, and the technical and scientific literature, in order to support decision making and policy definition at different levels. The proposed application of the various criteria leads to the conclusion that for DES, electrochemical based ESS are the most adequate, among which Li ion batteries and redox flow batteries, particularly suited for local and/or household applications. The current policies sought out for Portugal are also examined in order to identify which aspects should be improved to promote and increase the relevance of DES in the Portuguese energy mix, and it is concluded that specific policies and support are needed to increase the relevance of decentralized electricity storage systems.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Impacto de práticas breves de mindfulness no otimismo, vergonha interna e stresse percebido de estudantes do ensino superior

    Get PDF

End User Involvement in the Big Data Based Service Development Process

    Get PDF
Even though extant research has addressed end user involvement in the process of Information Systems’ Development within a Smart City environment, it has not done it in its early or Fuzzy Front End phase. Therefore, this paper promotes and describes a concrete big data based service process in which end users and other individual stakeholders are involved since the early phases of development. Researchers used this end user data to define which part of the big data would be opened for developers and citizens in future stages of the projectinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Physical and technical demands of the extra time: a multiple FIFA World Cups’ analysis

    No full text
This study examined the physical and technical demands of the 2010, 2014 and 2018 men’s FIFA World Cups with special reference on extra time. Data were collected from 69 FIFA’s open-access match reports (n= 3,238 individual players’ observations) and scaled by individual playing exposure. Players covered less total distance (TD) from the 1st half to the extra time period (r=0.17–0.27; P<0.05). Moreover, the number of sprints decreased from the 1st half to the extra time (r=0.13–0.25; P<0.01). However, substitutes who started on or came in on the match throughout the 2nd half covered higher TD in the extra time compared to the 2nd half (r=0.11–0.43; P<0.01), and compared to starters during the 2nd half and extra time (r=0.11–0.36; P<0.05). Additionally, substitutes who started on, or came in throughout the extra time covered higher TD and performed more sprints compared to starters during the extra time r=0.12–0.23; P<0.05). Generally, no meaningful differences were observed in successful shots and dribbles between periods of the match and between starting status (P>0.05). The occurrence of extra time appeared to be detrimental to the work rate during the match, which can be counteracted by substitute players.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

School-based soccer practice is an effective strategy to improve cardiovascular and metabolic risk factors in overweight children

    No full text
We examined the effects of a 6-month school-based soccer programme on cardiovascular (CV) and metabolic risk factors in overweight children. Methods: 40 boys [8-12 years; body mass index (BMI) >2 standard deviations of WHO reference values] participated in complementary school-based physical education classes (two sessions per week, 45-90 min each). The participants were divided into a soccer group (SG; n = 20) and a control group (CG; n = 20). The SG intervention involved 3 extra-curricular school-based soccer sessions per week, 60-90 min each. The intervention lasted for 6-months. All measurements were taken at baseline and after 6-months. From baseline to 6-months, the SG significantly improved (p < .05) BMI z-score, waist circumference, waist-to-height ratio, percentage of fat mass, percentage of fat-free mass, diastolic blood pressure, total cholesterol, triglycerides, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, but no such improvements were observed for the CG. After the intervention, the prevalence of soccer participants with normal waist-to-height ratio (30 vs. 5%; p = .037), systolic blood pressure (90 vs. 55%; p = .039), total cholesterol (80 vs. 65%; p = .035) and LDL-C (90 vs. 75%; p = .012) were significantly higher than at baseline. The findings suggest that a 6-month school-based soccer intervention program represents an effective strategy to reduce CV and metabolic risk factors in overweight children prepared to take part in a soccer program.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
