DECOR in Pompeii - WP 6 Barker
No full textThe photos available in this data collection were taken in the context of the ERC Consolidator Grant DECOR (PI Annette Haug). Some subprojects were co-funded by the Excellence Cluster ROOTS. The project´s focus was on decorative principles in Late Republican and Early Imperial Italy (2nd century BC to 1st century AD), the subjects then focused mainly on Pompeii as a case study. The photos are organised according to authors/workpackages, and within the largest photo collection (Haug) according to functional context - and then, in the case of houses and tabernae, according to the modern address (Regio, Insula, entrance)

Ceramic Technology of the Neolithic and the Bronze Age Transformation in Northern and Central Europe
No full textThe supplement is a more detailed description of the experiments published. The article itself deals with the experimental production of Funnel Beaker pottery, as well as the type and duration of decoration in comparison to Bronze Age pottery in Northern and Central Europe. Production times, surface treatment and tools are presented. Based on the hypothesis that the decoration of Neolithic pottery is more elaborated than the more simply decorated or undecorated vessels of the Bronze and Iron Ages, the chaînes opératoires were documented, the time for the individual working steps measured and compared. Ethnographic and archaeological observations are also used to investigate the question of household production. Did every household in the European Neolithic and the Bronze Age have the technological and practical prerequisites to produce pottery? Or was it rather a matter of specialised groups that produced ceramics, so-called workshops, as is taken for granted for metal production? While the article considers the latter scenario to be more plausible, the experiments show that the time required to produce Neolithic and Bronze Age vessels remains almost the same
Einzelknochen in eisenzeitlichen Fundplätzen West- und Mitteleuropas: Eine Musteranalyse mittels Korrespondenzanalyse und vorgeschalteter bayesscher Modellierung
No full textZusammenfassung Dieser Beitrag untersucht die Behandlung menschlicher Überreste in eisenzeitlichen Siedlungen, Heiligtümern und Oppida mittels Korrespondenzanalyse und einem vorgeschalteten bayesschen log-linearen Modell. Die Imputation fehlender Werte ermöglicht die gleichzeitige Analyse von Datensätzen, die ansonsten schwer miteinander vergleichbar gewesen wären. Das Modell und die anschließende Korrespondenzanalyse zeigt die selektive Deponierung von Schädelknochen in Siedlungen und postkranialen Knochen in Heiligtümern und Oppida. Die Korrespondenzanalyse trennt dabei auf der ersten Achse nach Robustizität der Knochen, jedoch in weiteren Dimensionen auch nach unterschiedlichen Selektionsmechanismen. Die Verwendung von Kredibilitätsellipsen ermöglicht eine differenzierte Darstellung und hilft, signifikante von weniger signifikanten Mustern zu trennen. Zukünftige Forschungen sollten sich vermehrt mit der Untersuchung der Knochen selbst befassen, wofür insbesondere naturwissenschaftliche Methoden in Betracht kommen. Abstract This paper analyses the treatment of human remains in Iron Age settlements, sanctuaries and oppida using correspondence analysis together with a Bayesian log-linear model. The imputation of missing values enables the simultaneous analysis of data sets that would otherwise have been difficult to compare. The model and the subsequent correspondence analysis show the selective deposition of cranial bones in settlements and post-cranial bones in sanctuaries and oppida. The correspondence analysis separates on the first axis according to the robustness of the bones, but in further dimensions also according to different selection mechanisms. The use of credibility ellipses enables a differentiated visualization and helps to separate significant from less significant patterns. Future research should focus more on the study of the bones themselves, using scientific methods in particular
